How to mount a Phalaenopsis orchid on wood

  • Orchids are epiphytes which grows on tree branches in the wild.
For first week of mounting the orchid water it everyday until the orchid adapt to its new media. I am using tap water room temperature, not too hot or too cold, you can also use rain water if available. Just water the roots avoiding the leaves. I never use ice to water my orchids, they are tropical plant and wouldn't like the cold.
Do not move the orchid to a new location after mounting it to avoid transplant shock, for instance, if the orchid was placed in east facing window, the mounted orchid should be place back to the spot.
For the following week, water it twice a week especially in the summer.
Then water it weekly or sparingly in winter time. The twine can be removed when the roots anchor itself to the wood.

I LOVE WHAT YOU DID with your orchids by putting them on your tree stuffs. It looks so very very GOOD! I I have a tree stuffed but I don’t think I can do it. #1 I live in La #2 it get too hot here #3 I am in a wheelchair and can’t get out into the grass,( I am 77 years old, and what happened to me I wasn’t like this, only a few years ago is what what happened to me ).So I am very happy to watch you with your orchids. I had a couple of orchids, but one died on me. I have only one left and am taking good care of it, won’t get another til I really know what I am doing. This is why I got to your channel and love it!! I will stay with your channel. Thank you!!!

Just found this video and your channel as I was searching for information regarding mounting phaleanopsis. You mounted these beautifully. I have a few small Phals ( bellina & violacea etc ) and I have also made a mount ready for them. I intend to glue them in place. Thank you for this video ......I have subscribed to you.

I know that bark adds to the beauty of the piece. My experiance with tree limbs is that if you don't remove the bark, the wood won't last near as long. I think it's because of the cambian layer between the bark and the wood is high protein, when the limb dies, bacteria moves in and feeds on it. Also Beaver don't eat the bark as many think. It peaks off the bark to get to the cambian layer.
I love your idea and mounted a Nodosa on oak after I removed the bark. It was a little pale, so I used a natural stain to bring out the richness of the wood. Soak steel wool in a quart of vinegar for 4 days then brush it in. Pine turns a sun bleach grey, but cherry and oak turn a nice rich Mahogany color. Cider is no good, it turns black, as if you spray painted black. So test the wood before you coat the whole thing. Also, it looks like water when you brush it on, but will change it's color in about 5 minutes like magic.
I also sealed my wood with boiled linseed oil, waited an hour to cure and rubbed off the surface with steel wool. Linseed Oil is thin and soaks in deep, so rubbing off the surface doesnt effect the protection. Just gives the Orchid a little more to grip to.
You shared this great idea to all, and I like to give back to folks like you if I can. A paint scraper will remove the bark easily.

Great video. When I attache my moss, or large strips of box, I use a hot glue gun - of course I make sure I don't burn the orchid or its roots. To secure orchids, which I sometimes mount vertically, I use a few wood chopsticks inserted at 45 degree angles, like the letter V.

I absolutely love this. What a wonderfully detailed tutorial. I got thin-medium winding branches from michaels before I watched this.. to make a hanging lattice for many orchids. I was going to glue/ wrap twine around them and add moss. The tie / crochet orchids of all sizes to them and suspend them all from a ceiling sky light. After watching this, I don't know how it will work. Do you have any suggestions?

Oh your orchids look so beautiful and happy! I've been looking for videos on mounting my 2nd orchid to try something more natural. This is the best orchid mount I've watched. Thank you so much. Btw, it's been almost 1 year since you made this video, could you show us how these orchids are doing now, did they do well?
And one question: Will this mounting ever need to be changed? Like re-potting? And if so, how would that be done? If the roots wrap around it seems that removing them might be hard.
Thank you again. Your orchids look so happy!!
PS I live in North California and I mist my potted orchids each day, just a bit, sometimes more than once. One day I decided I would mist under each leaf, lifting them up and giving a little spray, including the flowers. I also put each pot in a larger old doggy bowl full of water (for humidity). The results in just a few days were wonderful... each of their leaves began to lift and reach up, they also became stronger. Now, it like they are just waiting, lifting up their "wings" and enjoying a misting each day! My blooms began in Jan of this year and they still look happy. This is my very first orchid and I'm a very happy "parent"! I just got a new little one and will try to mount it just as you showed. :)
    Thank you!!!

I just have to water them twice a week during the winter because its very dry inside the house with the heater.

Orchids in coco coir pole is fine as long as the pole is bigger, because the orchids roots will spread eventually. I love mounting my orchids and my orchids seems to thrive mounted. I got the moss locally i don’t know where to get them online.

    • @richardwatts6361
      @richardwatts6361 2 роки тому +3

I love the idea, but she's not very organised. Maybe prepare the branches first by making a small slightly slanted hollow filled with bark chips and moss for the orchid to rest in and water to drain out. Orchids don't have props to hold them up in nature, most just dangle out of trees to catch the moisture. She needs to fix moss to the branch under the orchids. There's also a nice pocket between the branches, a natural place to put a orchid where bark and leaves would collect, just what would happen in nature.

Hi Dart, You can use dry moss too or whatever media you want like coco fiber sheet or coconut husk to help retain moisture for orchids until they are strong enough and adapt to their new environment. Orchids doesnt like soil, they usually grow up on trees. Hope that helps.
