  • What does the UK General Election mean for British Scandal? A bonus episode of course. We already have a whole series covering Liz Truss losing her Premiership. Now she has lost her seat altogether. The first former PM to do so since 1935! Matt and Alice speak to the man some would say is behind her recent loss, James Bagge. Last week, he stood against her as an independent candidate winning 6000 votes. Oh, and his brother, Sir Jeremy Bagge, featured in our Liz Truss series. James Bagge paints a picture of the negative reaction Liz Truss received on the doorsteps of Norfolk, and weighs in on Matt’s questionable impression of Sir Jeremy.

    1. She was an awful P.M. and more importantly 2. She was an even more awful M.P.

Where do the Tories find these incompetent people. Liz was a dingbat and Johnson is a serial lier. Great qualifications for a Tory MP. But the UK suffered because of these selection of these two non entities.

Having looked through the constituency results in The Times it was evident that the centrist one nation Tories who worked hard on their campaign had a lower swing against them than those who complacently thought that their current majority was sufficient to give them a decent cushion. My MP who was defending a majority of over 27,000 never stopped championing the local community and being ever present in the constituency - visiting businesses, organisations, voluntary groups etc. Emailing newsletters and posting videos on social media This is all the more difficult when you have senior ministerial duties. His majority tumbled to 11,000 with votes going three ways - almost equally. Labour and Lib Dems understandably targeted the seats that they felt most vulnerable irrespective of the Tory majority because they picked up on dissatisfaction with the sitting MP as a point they could focus upon. I know that MPs are self employed and therefore technically only answerable to their constituents but surely they should either live in the constituency or have a permanent base for weekly visits. The political parties should appoint independent agencies to undertake annual appraisals and the results published like Ofsted inspections.

Ramsay Macdonald was hammered in 1935, losing by about 20,000 votes. He came back to parliament as an MP for one of the university seats (they had their own elected representatives at the time).

If the Tory party still has the capacity for reflection it could do worse than reflecting on this.

Yeah, cos Truss lost due to misogyny. Come ON. She lost due to incompetence and arrogance.
