Buffy was playing the part of the young man because she identified with him more emotionally. She Loved someone and accidentally killed them.
Got it ! Makes sense
I adore this episode - for many, many reasons, but one of them is the fact that I never knew how much I needed to see Buffy pointing a gun at Angel and screaming "DON'T WALK AWAY FROM ME, BITCH" until this episode. ;)
Soooo good !!
One of my faves.
A clever plot device(and the twist) and the outstanding work by SMG and Boreanz(Whedon said this is when he knew could spin off "Angel") give it a lot of rewatch value.
Buffy's grief, guilt and horror are so palpably heartbreaking..and that kiss just shattered her.
The casual reminder of the monstrous nature of the vampires"We'll find you a nice toddler"(and they aren't joking) is a nice touch.
Yeah they aren’t to be messed with
“When is Spike gonna get his title card?”
River Song: “Spoilers…”
🤣🤣🤣
Hello Sweetie.
They have to become full-time workers for that to happen. While he was in a lot of episodes, he wasn't at the point where it was worth showing up for work every day. It was a drag for some of the actors, like Seth Green. And Kristine Sutherland (Buffy's mom) never got it.
I always thought I Only Have Eyes For You was a great stand alone episode, where the tragic love affair between the teacher and student from the 1950's is repeated down through the years by anyone who is influenced by it in the school now. Great writing here in a very atmospheric episode, in which we also have the Angelus/Drusilla/Spike triangle in the background. Interesting that Buffy has no empathy for the student in the incident, even though he is the young innocent, and the female teacher is the adult, of course she is using her own experience of being hurt and reflecting this in her attitude. Another interesting thing about this episode is we hear Snyder and Police Officer mention 'The Mayor' for the first time. Great scene at the end when Spike is now able to walk and is plotting his revenge. This is very much in the style of X-Files type episode.
Yeah watching it back I enjoyed it more for sure
My take is that Buffy can't forgive the student because she can't forgive herself. She feels that she was responsible for Angel's "death", destroying the person she loved, even though it wasn't intentional. The student killed the person he loved, by accident (although he did bring the gun, it seems obvious to me that the gun went off because he was waving it around and not because he intended to pull the trigger). When Buffy is talking about the student, about what he did and why the teacher would ever forgive him, she is projecting her own feelings.
I don’t think this is a standalone episode at all. It’s one of the best examples of an arc episode wearing a monster-of-the-week plot as a disguise.
The episode isn’t about the ghosts, they’re just a device for exploring Buffy’s feelings of hopeless guilt about having “killed” Angel, learning about some of the ways Jenny’s death is affecting Giles and Willow (Giles wishing he could talk to her one last time, Willow diving into magic), and seeing Spike be totally done with Angelus so decide to turn against him, all of which is important set-up for the season finale and its emotional stakes.
Unlike, for example, Go Fish or Killed By Death, standalone episodes with one or two minor tie-ins to the arc but no notable impact on it, this episode isn’t skippable if trying to build an abridged list of Season 2 episodes that leaves the arc intact.
omfg... Clue! You did it crazy good! haha 😂
Thank you!! 😁
OMG, I love your Clue reference. That scene with Mrs White is so funny!
Hahah soo iconic !
The students teaching in class isn't all that unheard of. I actually taught intro Spanish in 11th grade for 3 months until our actual teacher finally arrived. Granted this was in one of the worst educated states at the time lol. And not your ass about to bust when Spike climbs out that damn chair, lol.
Lost my shit hahaha
Reinforcing this. 9th grade math. It was only two days, not months, and there was a sub there babysitting, but my actual teacher didn't want to lose momentum and knew I understood the material. Thought it was preferable to two lost days with a sub that wasn't up on the plan.
George, you've brightened my day.
Awww thanks RC hope you’re doing ok 💜
Bit of trivia for you: Xander’s “I’m dead as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore” @05:51 is a direct reference to the movie Network (1976), which was an old film when I was…well, a much younger me. It won four Oscars, and although I suspect one or two aspects may not have aged well, I think it’s worth having on your radar as something to watch. I make it a point not to ask for reactions unless asked; just wanted you to be aware it existed and may be worth seeing. Enjoyed this; cheers.
Ooh cool thanks will look into it
I was waiting for your reaction to the ending. Epic!
Nearly passed away haha
This episode aired in 1998. Personal computers hadn't been around that long and there can't have been too many people who had the education credits to teach high school AND the expertise in computers. AND who were willing to work at a high school with such a high faculty death rate. So finding a substitute would take a while.
Hahah true that
I hated this episode initially, it on re-watch I love it, so much depth!
Everyone always thinks Willow teaching the class is weird, but hear me out. I was in high school several years before this episode aired, and there was exactly one computer science teacher in our school. If he had disappeared one day, it indeed could have been difficult to find a teacher to fill in right away, and being a computer geek, I'm pretty sure I could have taught the class from the teacher's notes.
Haha no way, I used to teach after school drama class tbh
The Clue reference!❤❤🔥👩🏻🔥
Iconic !!
Hi there I'm new to you channel and I absolutely love it, Buffy the vampire slayer is my childhood and i hope you enjoyed it so far, :)
Awww thanks and welcome ☺️💜🦇
Imagine if Willow became a little bit of a witch
Would be iconic !
One of the things that I do find a little disturbing about this otherwise fantastic episode is fact that while James is portrayed as the villain here (and he is a villain, what he did was awful) the fact that Ms Newman is a predatory teacher having a affair with one of her students is kinda glossed over. She is kinda a villain as well here.
Yeah they are both grey characters
It's never directly called out, but it _does_ explain why everyone except Buffy feels sorry for James and Buffy's lack of sympathy is treated as a sign of her personal issues. If not for the fact that she was his teacher, it'd be really fucking weird that everyone else felt so sorry for the guy who shot his girlfriend when she tried to break up with him, before they even found out that the shooting was an accident.
Love this ep so much🥰 its so fun!
It’s got re-watch factor for sure
I've never agreed with Giles's forgiveness speech. If someone hurts someone I love, i'm not gonna forgive them because THEY need it? Would Giles forgive Angelus? Buffy wouldn't have slept with Angel if Jenny had told them about Angel, I get why Jenny had trouble with that, but I also get why Buffy was mad and struggled to forgive her, plus she's 16 and she was angry at herself because to her she 'killed' Angel. But she did show Jenny compassion in the end because she wanted Giles to be happy. P.s I also looovveee that song, I have it on my Spotify and it always reminds me of this episode.❤Great reaction as always.
Thanks !
I think that Giles knew that Buffy was having trouble forgiving herself and that's why he said it. He's trying to help his kid, not make some grand statement about the "true nature" of forgiveness.
However, I do agree that it's an act of compassion. If someone needs forgiveness from you and you make them jump though hoops, getting or doing things for you to make it up to you and you eventually decide that you have gotten enough "to forgive" them, then it's not forgiveness at all. It's an exchange and you have decided to not be mad anymore after getting what you deem to be of at least equal value.
giles doesn't say you're required to forgive them; only that, and i quote, it's "an act of compassion". obviously you decide how compassionate you are towards that person. different strokes for different folks and all. it's not uncommon for the family members of a murder victim to campaign *against* the death penalty for the murderer, but it obviously doesn't happen every time, either.
The moment we start to root for Spike.
My moment was the second he walked on screen 🤣
Yeah, you crushing hard on our Spike... But who could blame you, it's James Marsters!
