Hi there, my name is Eduardo. I’ve been watching your videos for the past one year and I wanted to say congratulations on your work. I need help with something. So my whole life I’ve I’ve been speaking the American English, and now that I moved to Dubai all my friends are British and I’ve been trying to work on my pronunciation of the RP, which seems to be the English you use. Every time I cannot stop flapping my t’s. Also every time i say the R in a very american way. WateRRR. I PRCTICE EVERY DAY but the consistency doesnt come. I have to be really focused and alone and my RP happens. The moment I try to use with someone, I feel I am playing a character and I automatically go back to the american accent. My self steam is really getting impacted by all this, I feel an idiot
Hey Eduardo, I'm just curious. What would happen if you needed to move to another place again and all your friends there were... dunno, maybe Indian? Would you feel the need to change your accent again to fit in? I think that if you can be understood by your friends and you are able to communicate well with them, the British pronunciation of words will be less important. Unless, of course, you do have a personal goal of sounding like a British person. I have this goal, but unfortunately, due to different reasons, I have to choose what areas of my English I can really commit to improving, and I noticed that the British accent that I'd love to have is not of ultimate importance. Don't feel bad about not being able to speak like your friends do. I speak with a Brazilian accent, to be more specific, with a unique Bahia accent and during my time in the UK, I received a lot of compliments because I sounded good and clear to them. I hope this comment helps you reflect and feel good with what you already have, so you can keep working on your British accent with a fresher perspective, if you wish.
