@Wiggle Plays, what you want is a plasma caster with +50% VATS hit chance. Then target heads. If you can find one with instigating effect (double damage with first shot) you can one shot kill super mutants even at level 100 in VATS and even without using power armor (i.e. not using the stabilized perk card for extra armor penetration). High perception helps with the hit chance. Also concentraded fire maxed out helps. Recommend Grim Reaper's sprint maxed out as it is very effectiv refilling AP when killing enemies with one shot.
I lucked up and rolled an instigating plasma caster on my first try. It has become my favorite "daily driver" on my low health non-PA everyday loadout.
Sneak attacks depend on armor and agility ,weapon also but it depends on the enemy. Super mutants are almost deaf so when you are in shadowed leathers unyielding plus sneak perks ,you should easily get at least first 2 shots in sneak. It doesn't apply during some events that are unsneakable ,sneak is switched off at them by default

The Caster accuracy really benefits from high Perception and I use Sweetwater's Special Blend and Party Boy for a +12 bonus PER bonus.
ive been playing a full health stealth heavy gunner for a couple years now and i love the plasmacaster. i run an instigating +50% hit in vats for when i snipe or feel particularly sneaky, that bfg one taps anything but bosses. but i like my basic 25%extra pen as a backup, and i actually have a third that i use for farming westec and huntersvill with the extra damage vs supermutants just because its a decent too for the job. to really stealth well it does take slowing down a bit and taking your time, so i tend to sneak up, get a few free double damage kills, then pop up as soon as im spotted and kill everyone nearby before crouching again.
You're basically hitting enemies with ball lightning. That's already a selling point for me! I love this weapon. It's a Bloodied VATs friendly three star. If a team ran with this weapon equiped, there's not much that could stand up to them.

If you want a true sniper, Black Powder Rifle with it's whopping 400 range is the way to go. It's Loud, but you'll be so far away, picking them off one by one, they'll all be dead before they find you. Aim for legendary VATS hit chance and faster reload. Toss on Ground Pounder and Speed Demon for fastest reloads. Now THAT'S a sniper.
Used to have a character on Xbox running a bloodied/50%vats Dragon in a full set of unyielding armor, and it used a bloodied handmade for indoors. That Dragon didn't play games, that's for sure... Now my PC main uses a bloodied handmade and the Cold Shoulder. (I just love that shotgun) Your comment makes me miss my Dragon though...
I have a Bloodied Plasma Caster, and an Instigating one. I also have a Quad. All of them are super effective and ammo efficient, but the Instigating works EXTREMELY well with this weapon with its already high front-damage. Crits on an undamaged lv 100 Super Mutie go over 2200 consistently. The downside of this gun, though, is that it does tend to miss a lot when you think it SHOULD have hit. Nice showcase of one of my personal faves. :)
My main build is setup to just swap between Plasma Caster's, Shotguns, Broadsider, Cryo/Flamers and Gatling Plasmas. Swap a few cards and be setup for PA tank, swap a few and Cryo/Flamer or shotgun stealth build and not have to move S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points around. I tend to use an Enclave Sniper without PA for farming ammo though as I can complete Daily Ops faster and get ammo quicker most of the time.
I don't believe snake attacks work with energy weapons but yeah you get a bloodied plasma caster it's happy days one shotn most things still recommend plasma gatliner for bosses
i have a nice instigating 50% vats hit chance 25% less vats ap cost and it deals a nice 1200 damage on headshot to full health normal enemies but a nice 300~ damage on second hit if a cleanup is ever required, is my normal go to weapon when im wanting to wander and do dailies

My main char. has Aristocrat, VATS hit and lower VATS cost. Today my secondary char. rolled Two shot, VATS hit and -15% reload. My favorite heavy weapon. And you don't need to make ammo never again after the initial 200. Just do the Pitt or daily ops.
I dont know why the weapon misses a lot... same happens with the gauss rifle... and the enclave plasma rifle... they just miss with 95% chance... i have found out if you move sideways or jump, you get the shot even with 30% chance... lol
Very good heavy weapon, great damage and vats accuracy. Pretty useless for stealth builds though, like all heavy guns really. I have a bloodied with 50% vats, that’s pretty powerful but I never use it much. I don’t particularly like the firing sound it makes, gets annoying after a while. 😂
The sound that a weapon makes can be a deal breaker. I've been using a vampire chainsaw for a while. I enjoy using it but I'm sick of the chainsaw noise at this point. I've been turning the audio way down.
I didn't think about that until you said it, but I don't see many running with this. There are about ten weapons I cycle through depending on my mood and this is one of them.
I know its based off the original Fallout 1 and 2 BOS plasma casters, we saw it in F3 and New Vegas, but it was only a mod in F4 and now its a Atomic Shop only gun ....there goes another 1200 atoms. So is it worth the price?
I just happened to see a different UA-camr say that in a few days (May 15 - 17, 2023), Minerva will have the Plasma Caster priced at 563 gold bullion. Definitely get it then if you can. She should be at the Crater on those days. At the moment, the Plasma Caster has the highest damage per shot of all the heavy weapons. I believe all the mods can be purchased with bullion but at a different vendor.
Dont use the tip with the 3 blades use that one that looks like ufo on its side the accuracy becomes way better and it doesnt take a lot of your range youll notice it in vats for sure and for a good run on this weapon make a heavy gunner and prime it i do 1500 damage headshots on mutants and those arent even critical hits i dont even have cards installed for extra critical damage lmao

Crit build Power Armor with Stabilized is where the Caster pops. With Power User and Electric Absorption and fusion core doesn’t even really go down.

Due to projectile travel time it likes to miss a lot and considering low ammo capacity "Lock and Load" and "Quick Hands" come in handy

I love my plasma caster :) I use a bloodied with 2 trash stars xD so basically a 1 star... and I use it outside of my PA and it still slaps silly hard
My best roll bloodied/ffr/90rweight ,will be used when new update appears.
weapon is a bit slow and bloodied yes i get 1300 on a scorch beast without vats but try getting a faster firerate will change your mind

It would interesting to try with shadowed/unyielding covert scout with shielded raider leathers. Might be something I test on custom world.

The atomic shop item is only a skin, not the actual weapon. That's bought with gold. Yes, it's worth it.
