Delenn was such an awesomely written and portrayed character, she commanded absolute respect and took absolutely no crap from anybody. THIS is how you create memorable characters Hollywood, it's a shame they've long forgotten the greats like Ellen Ripley, Delenn, and far too many to count.

Also, Hollywood wants strong powerful women? Here is one, Strong willed, powerful in wisdom and presence, why not talk about her? Oh I'm sorry, she doesn't parrot the victim mentality, they want her to talk about. After i don't know how many years i just realized the gravity of Delenns 'goodbye' there.
When they left B5 for Minbar she said that she does not use the word since Minbari culture does not have a similar word since they believe that they will always meet again, even if its in another life.
So her saying goodbye to them is like the ultimate declaration of disdain.

What I like to imagine is what happened to these folks afterwards. They have built their careers on tearing down a legend, attacking something which cannot come back to attack them. Then presto, the a legend appears and smacks them down. I can just imagine universties saying "given your studies and recent events we fell it would be in all our best interests if you took your research elsewhere". NEVER attack legends. Legends have ways of fighting back, even when dead and gone. That's why they are legends.

    • @theprogram863
      @theprogram863 2 роки тому

That actually reflects well on them. Their real-life equivalents don't have enough intellectual honesty or open-mindedness to even feel shame when caught making a false and unfounded allegation about someone. In real life, two professors like that would probably boldly meet Delenn's eyes and claim she's lying, or fooling herself, because they _know_ they're right. Even/especially if they're wrong. You only feel shame if you haven't fooled yourself and still have a sense of shame Delenn can appeal to.
By the way, this is a common TV trope for a real-life political controversy. The protagonist makes some logical point and, instead of arguing back, the antagonist is left speechless or filled with shame. In other words, the writer adopts the pose that either the opponent has never heard this argument before, or they know their side of the issue is wrong and they're intentionally lying out of greed or selfishness or something. Usually this is dishonest writing and indicates that it's the _screenwriter_ who either didn't bother doing the research or did and did but is being dishonest for propaganda purposes. In other word, the writer turns a debatable point into a mic drop moment, a _false_ mic drop because the straw man opponent should be able to answer but gives up because writing. Deployed on the Sheridan/Delenn issue, obviously the world works however JMS designed it so this critique doesn't apply, except in the sense that I see so many false mic drops in TV fiction, that even a genuine one doesn't feel as authentic as it should.

Delenn was such an awesome character, A true paragon of true femininity and strength at its best.
Delenn was so graceful, kind and caring with an almost bottomless well of wisdom, but her strength of will, character and personality was just outstanding, for which she was a force you did not want to be on the wrong side of but the best of friends you could ever have on your side.
Delenn was the kindest and most generous person you could ever meet but equally the most terrifying of enemies when pushed or crossed, she was a force so powerful when messed with that entire empires would tremble or shatter.
    I miss B5 so much.

Fantastic character (so was Ivanova btw, though in a very different way), in part though because she wasn't quite so perfect. She could be deceptive and controlling. Sheridan went to Zha'hadum in part because he didn't totally trust her after she misled him about Anna's fate. Hers was the deciding vote to annihilate humanity after Dukhat's death; understandable under the circumstances but she never admitted to Sheridan what she had done. Over the course of the show, she became less certain that she knew best, but ironically this was part of her achieving true wisdom.
Much of her journey in the show was transforming from one kind of great leader to another, so it's much less obvious than that of the other characters who have more obvious character arcs. Also, the Minbari changed with her. They started the series thinking of themselves as junior-grade Vorlons in training: aloof, cryptic, self-righteous know-it-alls. By the end of the series, they were on the path to being true friends and partners with the other races of the galaxy. Through Sheridan and Delenn, they had grown enough to begin to be able to critique the Vorlons' behavior, and so were finally able to grow beyond just imitating their mentors.

And I have a knack for cracking system codes, so while you were busy downloading the New World Order into me, I was watching the system work. I know where it comes in, and where it goes out. And I recorded this conversation. Broadcast the whole damned thing. So the enemy knows what you have in mind, Danny. Hmm... their missiles are probably halfway here by now.
      DANIEL: You're lying!
GARIBALDI: Holograms don't lie, Danny Boy.
      DANIEL: Computer! End simulation!
      DANIEL: End simulation!!
GARIBALDI: Whoops! Guess the system's busy! According to your records, they are more humanitarian than you are, so they'll probably only target your military and research facilities. This place IS on a military base, isn't it?
      DANIEL: NOOOOO!!!
GARIBALDI: Rest easy, friends. Rest easy.
Garibaldi's Finest Hour, without a doubt.

Perhaps it came out at the wrong time: the 1990s, because it referenced the rise of fascism in the 1930s. It wasn't until around 2015 that the worldwide movement to elect far-right authoritarian leaders really took off, perhaps following Putin: Brexit leaders in UK, Bolsonaro of Brazil, Modi of India, Orbán of Hungary, Lukashenko of Belarus, Duturte of the Philippines, Netanyahu in Israel, and Trump in US.
_Star Trek_ talked about the rise of "supermen" like Khan who took over a number of countries, but then squabbled amongst themselves. There was a "war to end tyranny," as Spock called it, to get rid of them. That could have been an interesting spinoff movie or something, having relevance to the movement I just described.

Oddly enough. Genuine academics and educated people tend to have too much things to do to go on shows like this. A good example is the Brexit disaster in UK. Before the referendum. Most expects, academics and even lay people with some knowledge in the technical aspect to international trade, knew it would be a disaster. The UK media have a lot of 2 side discussions on TV, and watch enough of them, you can see a trend. The Remainers, generally have a lot of different expects, from different places, and backgrounds. The Leave side, are often all the same set of people, from usually the same few Euro-sceptic organization and think tanks. Most expects and academics are usually too busy to talk on TV. Those from think tanks etc. aren't, because they are paid specifically to go on TV to market dubious ideas, it's their entire career. In academia, only a rare few people are suited to go on TV, that's why there are often so few of them anyone has ever heard of. So 'talking heads' and academics don't really go together.

Likewise religious clergy and religious people in general, hold the highest levels of education on the planet and many clergy hold top positions in scientific circles. Okay, yeah he wasn't perfect and had his flaws, and he was something of a control freak.... but like Delenn said, he was a good man. To be fair most of what Sheridan went through is seemingly so outlandish that a lot of people wouldn't believe it, and Sheridan himself wouldn't probably waste time trying to convince people that he had died and then been brought back from the dead by the oldest sentient lifeform in the galaxy/universe. Or met Jack the Ripper. Or that the Vorlons look like angels. Or that beyond hyperspace there's another dimension of incomprehensible alien nightmares wanting to bust into our universe to destroy us all.

To me this wasn't some grand girl-boss own on Deleen's part, neither was it meant to be. This is sad. This is an old woman watching with hurt in her eyes as the children of the people her and her husband gave their whole lives for spit on their legacy for petty self-interest. A heartbroken woman, weary from what time has wrought, giving one final word of harsh truth to a generation of ingrates before leaving them to the self-destructive path which she knows they are dead set on walking. I feel so much pity for her to have lived so long to see all they had loved and fought for decay and turn to ash. Lorien truly wasn't wrong about the curse of immortality, and while she may not be immortal as he had been (thankfully), her long lifespan had still doomed he to watch on as humanity forgot all about them and the day arrived that their memory would be mocked. She never deserved to see that.

This, in my opinion, is the best episode of Babylon 5..Period.
The Deconstruction of Falling Stars is perfect in the idea of history repeating and being learnt, forgotten, distorted and learnt again. This clip is a prime example, that despite 100 years of relative peace, brought about by Sheridan and the major players of the Alliance, what has been learnt has quickly become distorted and forgotten. It makes sense to assume that after Delenn leaves, her words are 'deconstructed somewhat over the next 400 years by the future historians and to mean other than what was said. This is evident by the Orwellian future clip later on and it's consequence - The post great burn scene. We never find out how long it takes from 3262 for Earth to rebuild though it is implied that it will be many thousands of years.

I'd say it's not so much a matter of events being forgotten after a century, rather more a matter of the revisionists setting to work, just like they do in our own time today. You'd have to figure that, in this scene, most of the serious, thoughtful, and accurate scholarship about Sheridan was long since done, the definitive biographies already written. Maybe some of it had to wait fifty years or more for certain documents to be declassified and become available to scholars, but by the time of these scene, that's all been done. And if "publish or perish" is as real a thing in academia in this future history as it is in our own present day, then the only way for scholars studying this period to make their marks would be for them to "deconstruct" much of the history that's already been written.

Get used to it. The clip shows 'academics' talking on a clearly biased program, trying to paint Sheridan in a particular light. And remember that this was not that long after Earth was defeated by Sheridan's Alliance to stop Clark. Negative feelings toward the man were likely still strong for Earthers.
And in the series, this was not the first time this happened, especially from government controlled media. Today, several countries have "news" and media sources that act as propaganda for a party or government. It is quite common, even in the USA. Fox News, Newsmax and OAN all are extremely partisan media sources, so much so that left leaning ones have sprung up to counterbalance them. And they all paint people in unbalanced, incorrect lights.

I love the lines "you came all this way just to say that? ...... and Delenn's reply "you came just as far to say less" .... and then the "of course we would expect you to say that... we....." ! and Delenn's look ... shot him down without even a need to argue!!!

Noone believed that Richard III was a hunchback. Everyone assumed he was simply portrayed as such by his enemies. And then we found his bones underneath a car park, and he was hunchbacked.

"Hunchbacked" conjures up the image of a person slumped forward and has a hump on the back. Richard's lower spine was twisted, but he didn't slump forward, so he had no hump. We were lucky to find someone who had the same spinal deformity so we could easily see how he would look posture-wise.
      So...
      Neither was wrong.

I don't know if it's been said already, but the Membari don't have an equivalent word for 'good bye' it's something Delenn had to learn from humans since all Membari believe they will see each other again. For her to tell them 'good bye' it's like telling them that she hopes she never sees them ever again.
A single word to show her disdain for them. A single slap with a velvet glove.

The Minbari have a formal structure of culture and language that I assume emphasises politeness. Their salutations have very clear meanings, and are probably somewhat long-winded, and are usually meant to convey a wish of the speaker to see or meet another at some point again, preferably soon. And not just the desire to see another again, but probably also that their life is now better for having interacted with them.
In contrast, Human languages are considerably shorter. Things like "goodbye" or "good day" are short and have a final and lasting sense to them, depending on how you say it. It also says nothing for how the speaker was impacted by the interaction. So saying "goodbye" to an English-speaking Minbari is, at-best, confusing as they may think "Um... Are we not going to meet again? I liked you..." and, at-worst, insulting as they may take it as "What? You don't want to see me again?! How rude!" The way this might be counteracted would only be to explicitly say how you feel first, as in, "I'm really glad to have you, (Delenn, for example.) I cherished our time togerher, and I hope we can meet again. Goodbye." But most people would find this to be an awkward way to depart with another, at-least for most Humans. I think a Minbari would appreciate, "Goodbye - I hope we meet again!" since it conveys it just as well, especially in one-time interactions where it's understood that you may not actually meet again considering many Humans don't often buy into the same reincarnation beliefs as a Minbari.
So, to a Minbari that values such cultural traits like Delenn, saying "Goodbye" to these people is probably the most insulting thing she could say short of "I no longer wish speak to or see you ever again!" Delenn seemed to be culturally aware enough Humans to know that to simply turn your back and leave is an even more insulting gesture, but it lacks finality.

This is Delenn speaking - when this woman speaks it is the truth! (since Minbari don't lie - unless for honour). She states the facts and leaves. Then she does the ultimate insult "goodbye" - there is no Minbari farewell - ever saying of their's has a meaning for later - in this life or the next. For her to say "Good bye" like that is the ultimate insult. She has stated she won't see them again in this life or the next! They are no longer worthy to travel with her soul. Ouch
