Thank you! I needed that this morn. For a few minutes, getting away from this cold weather, medical issues, and the routine of "modern" life. Enjoyed the wind, rain, sea, lobster, and even a glimpse of that tiny spring branch. More, yet words fail me. Thumbs up, my friend.
Outstanding. Hiked all over the island over the years...Parsons being one of my favorites. Can't tell you how many times we missed the last boat out, and had to stay another nite. We adjusted to this routine and the locals took us in, and those memories will be with me for all time. Catalina is such a unique place, as you know. I miss my friends and fellowship along the way...so many great times and hope you guys that haven't made this trip, do it..,you will not be sorry, thanx, Alan.
I offered a entire trip for $60 due to Martin couldn't make it, not one taker! less than half price, when you add in parking and 1/3rd the site. they know not what they miss :-0
Great trip. Great hike. Humping the heavy pack, good for you. I would think you were a little sore. Love the props joke. Sun, sunset, rain, sun, fish,Garibaldi. Wow, and a mine all in one video. Spectacular.
Nice trip. I've never been to Catalina island, you sold on the free ride on your birthday. I'm already looking into it now. In planning on taking the family there on my birthday this year. Thanks!
Thanks for the reply back. I'm based in Indiana so this trip is on my bucket list. More research will be done before I attemp this but even if I can't make the summit all is not lost. It looks like a great area to explore and fish. Most likely I'll be out that way this fall and solo. DOB Oct. We can talk more of my disability then but I will contact you when my RV rolls your way.
Tatunka... I'm a Dances With Wolves fan also. Another great Catalina trip. The first video I watched of yours was the long Catalina trip you did when you covered the whole island. Great stuff.
Looks like it was a blast! It's gotta be an interesting experience to camp in crazy rain on the beach with water tornadoes offshore haha. The food looks delicious as always!
PHARRAOH- The trip was awesome, even hiked Hassel Island (National Park) with a tour guide, had a good time, learned about USA history and World history as it applied to St. Thomas, he (Doc our tour guide) made historical connections with awesome stories. If you get a chance, do it. The Historical Society was great on the island. Thanks for asking.
Great to see you in a different environment Alan. Good to see you catch something as well and it was pneumonia from at that rain. Stay safe bud and looking forward to the next one. Silver Moccasin I believe.
The Navy ship is the Lane Victory . Brother Adam was a merchant Marine . Helping maintain it . They actually sailed her to Catalina once a month I think . If a ship has no sails . Does it sail ?
Thanks for posting this guys, really cool. Can you tell me--can a person with a boat rent a camp site, then anchor off that spot on the beach and come in on their row boat?
Loved it Alan my friend. Be blessed. P.S. Cathy and I are coming out there this July ( 2nd week thru the end of month) to hike part of the PCT. I couldn't get permits for JMT, so I thought that we would hike close to your area. John
Great trip!!! No buffalo though. I was ready for a little ...."Yea we went to catalina Dave had curry, and spent the night and it rained then we went fishin and caught a fish oooooh wait gotta throw this one back but its alright cuz, I'm on a buffaloooooooo-ooooo!!!!!!"

winter, 3 weeks summer, 5 months. but there are many other sites. this one is the coolest. theres a link in the details, register for free trip over and back on your birthday
Man, I would love to do that trip! I went to Camp Emerald Bay in 1969 for summer camp, and Camp Cherry Valley (also on the island) in 1970. That was the last time I was there. My baby sister swam the channel in August 2013 -- I think she was the 272nd person to do so. Was that seal OK?
What, no butter for that lobster tail. Just kidding, you guys eat better on the trail than I do at home. Looks like a great place to spend a day or two. We have the Boston Harbor Islands that we can camp on. I'm going to try and make some time to kayak out to one and camp overnight. Good Striper and Bluefish fishing.
no there's no Gathering wood on the island especially on that beach there there's no trees you can buy extra wood online or there and they deliver it to the locker above the beach they give you a key when you get off the boat
Great trip Alan, I loved the look of that orange fish, what did you call it, was it a Garibaldi you said? A Garibaldi over here in Scotland is a biscuit. A least we can eat ours. lol Atb Glenn.
Andrew Estabrooks IF, I had someone filming my last hike, yesterday coming down this mountain, I began to hear boy george, ill tumble for you and broke into an adam sandler dance like he did on the stairs. the woman playing the song said she almost peed her pants at the sight. good times my friend, its what its all about
Cool trip, shame you didn't run across any of the legendary Catalina Island rattle-less rattlesnakes while you were there. They are quite the marvel of nature.
you can rent or take your bike but ride it ONLY on the coastal road. the trail is narrow and the fine is huge. nowhere to run if they see you. they just watch the boats and pull you out of line. I saw two geeks get fines for trying to out run a ranger, on an island must have been high on crack :-)
along the shore line road possibly but the final mille is a steep up and a steep down, specially the last drop to the sand. there are other camp grounds closer to two harbors. check the site, theres a link in the details. also, register on your birthday and go for free
BackCountry Nomad freeze the meet, then also freeze two small water bottles and pack it all in a large zip lock and center in in the pack, so the sun, nor your body heat is in contact. it will keep all day easy
Thank you! I needed that this morn. For a few minutes, getting away from this cold weather, medical issues, and the routine of "modern" life. Enjoyed the wind, rain, sea, lobster, and even a glimpse of that tiny spring branch. More, yet words fail me. Thumbs up, my friend.

The Navy ship is the Lane Victory . Brother Adam was a merchant Marine . Helping maintain it . They actually sailed her to Catalina once a month I think . If a ship has no sails . Does it sail ?
there use to me a band of pirates, that took Avalon once or twice a year. I almost joined them once. I regret not doing so. It would have been a blast

I think he was dying of old age. I walked right up to him and put 3 fish at his nose, he could even make any sound. tired eyes. poor ol guy.

BackCountry Nomad freeze the meet, then also freeze two small water bottles and pack it all in a large zip lock and center in in the pack, so the sun, nor your body heat is in contact. it will keep all day easy
Oh good idea! A steak, maybe a potato too and that would be a great first nights meal
