Lakalaka perform by the yavusa tonga of sawana village during the wedding of Adi Litia Cakabou Mara..to Henry Dugdale a British citzen and son of Sir Robert Dugdale of England
A majestic choreographic performance from the Ma'afu's progenies. Well done, ladies and gentlemen, God save the Lauans and the Tongans traditional cultures.
Malie malie toe malie lahi e faiva si'i kainga 'o Ma'afu and you people performed like royal descend from the heart of the friendly island. much love to you all and 'ofa atu.
Maafu influence yes....but the relations between Tonga and the fijians specifically TuiNayau and his people dates back to first settlement days...Tongans and early first settlers of Fiji were traversing back and forth from Tonga to fiji and vice versa.... their are chiefly intermarriages as well Tuitonga Fefine & Tapuosi..Vasu/Tamaha Fale fisi/Fiji...... Fale Fa Fisi/Fiji TuiMoturiki etc... the taovala tradition does predate Maafu... granted tongans during and before Maafu migrated to live in fiji...some were involuntarily exiled as well 🤣
Wow...they are just like Tongans...they are wearing the ta'ovala and kiekie...they also look just like us...they are our cousins whom settled the ilsands...
my love to me long lost cousins in the Lau Islands...I know that my ancestors from there. I just look like them, even though my grandparents and parents are tongans...
I’m half Tongan half Fijian and grew up in Tonga for 14 years. My grandparent are from Fiji who migrated to Haapai 1960. Seeing this makes me happy that there are so many mix culture among Fijian and Tongan. Vinaka and Malie Faiva Lakalaka
the island was given as a gift to Ma'afu by the king of Cakaudrove (Tui Cakau). nowadays they still speak Tongan and even their church minister is deployed from Tonga, infact many people in Lau speak both Lauan and Tongan in their daily conversation.
Im sorry but Ma'afu came to invade Fiji,he won the closest to Tonga which is the Lau group! He tried to invade the main island but he couldn't so he return and send a message to Tonga that he would not come back to Tonga and settle in the Lau group and became the ruler of the Lau group and it became part of Tonga, but later the British asked the Tongan government to give it back and the king agreed, and rightly so,as its truly belong to Fiji!Ma'afu and his warriors took a lot of beautiful women with them on that voyage and all settle their! We love our Fijian brothers and sorry for the past!
@@kamamotumotu3357 He didnt even invade most islands in the Lau group especially in Matuku where they suffered a great lost to them yaroi warriors and plus Lau was mostly settled by Tongans before even Ma'afu came and that is why Tui Nayau helped him coz they are closely related. This group is from vanuabalavu island, an island that was gifted to Ma'afu after he was defeated by the vaturova warriors at the battle of the cross wairiki in Taveuni.
In this lakalaka from moms village in Lomaloma. Sawana. Vanuabalava Lau.I get tear eyed each time i watch it to s ee most of my relatives here r not with us anymore! Like my uncle Akapulu Fotofili my moms brother who is leading the mens side here in the middle and others to name afew.
I never realized that I had 8% Tongan until I went and lived in Tonga for 4 years in the 70s. My mom told me that we had Tongan blood before going there. I actually got to meet some relatives there in Ha'akame in Tongatapu. My mother told me that it wasn't just the Lau groups, that had Tongans, places like Sigantoka and various Island groups had Tongans including some of the nobility.
This is why I always say, fijians like to believe they are pure-bred melanesians, they aren't, I'm from png, most fijians have a polyneisn look, that doesn't mean lighter skin, you're still dark but different facial features from us png

Sorry but how ?? The way fijians live is similar to the neighbouring islands around it .. they also hold similar morals and values ? Idont understand our point tho .. and sorry Fiji is a under the MICRONESIA category but you could debate that they should be in the Polynesian one
Fijians are considered Melanesians -- Micronesian islands are small hence the word 'micro', have you seen Fiji? its twice if not more the size of Tonga and Samoa. Anyway, the terms Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian are bullshit and were created by white colonialists. Fijians fall under Melanesia yet are more closely related in culture to Tonga than any of the Melanesian Islands -- the term Oceania is a far better one
I have a friend from vanua balavu and during her birthday, they prayed in tongan and the speech was in tonga. And here I'm just listening to their beautiful language wanting to marry one in future.😂😂
Thank you for this video. My grandfather leading the pack 😄 It’s the only footage I have of my grandfather and I watch it over quite often. Wish I got to meet him ❤️
I respect your opinion, We Laun's are FIJIAN first and foremost so any slight differences u may see is naturally because we are two cultures that have become ONE. 🙏🏾♥ 🇫🇯 🇹🇴
hi rockdalefijians what year was this? I see the lady with blue dress carrying the lil girl, its possible the lil girl is Tonga's current Crown Princess HRH Sinaitakala :) I also see my Papa's older brother Viliami standing from the back :)
You’re right aunty Mele Alo. She’s the Crown Princess Sinaitakala. She performed a tau’olunga earlier before the lakalaka. She came with her Mum Princess Ofeina for Adi Cakobau Mara & Lord Dugdale’s Tu’uvala that was held in Sawana back in 1991.. yep that’s Papa Vili there, and grandma ‘Elenoa ‘Alo accompanied Princess Ofeina there.
