Reports: ‘Massacre’ of civilians in Ethiopia’s Tigray region

- Amnesty International on Thursday confirmed reports of a "massacre" of civilians in northern Ethiopia's Tigray region. "Scores, and likely hundreds, of people were stabbed or hacked to death in Mai-Kadra town in the South West Zone of Ethiopia's Tigray Region on the night of November 9," the rights group said in a report. Citing witnesses interviewed and "verified" photo, video and satellite imagery, the human rights group said bodies had been "strewn" across the town. Fighting between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) party and the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been ongoing for a week now. Declining to identify who was responsible, Amnesty did however cite witnesses who alleged that Tigray special police members had used weapons such as knives and machetes, after a local defeat by Ethiopian EDF federal forces.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in a Facebook message Thursday claimed that federal forces had "liberated" the western part of Tigray, a mountainous region comprising six zones and a population of 5 million. Tigray's Debretsion Gebremichael called on the population to defend itself. Tigray TV claimed jets had bombed the Tekese hydroelectric dam, a structure completed in 2009 with Chinese involvement and set in a deep gorge.
Abiy ordered military operations on November 4, accusing the TPLF of attacking federal camps, a claim denied by the party.
United Nations officials on Thursday said Ethiopia, whose capital hosts African Union headquarters, was being urged to enable "immediate and unimpeded humanitarian access to conflict-hit Tigray. But access to the region is restricted, explains journalist Samuel Getachew, who is based in the capital Addis Ababa. "We believe there are more killings because of [what] the people that have moved to Sudan are telling us. And it's just a horrifying incident with too many people dying and many people being affected," he told DW on Friday. "Organizations are complaining they can't even transport basic food and all kinds of stuff. So the impact without us verifying it, we can only guess it's even worse than assumed." Inside Tigray, more than 2 million residents are dependent on humanitarian aid, estimates the UN. Some 11,000 Ethiopians have already sought refuge in neighboring Sudan. Up to 100,000 were expected in Sudan, said the UN refugee agency. Across Ethiopia as a whole, some 15 million people are dependent on humanitarian aid, amid a total population of 112 million.

I'm in Sudan right now and this is very sad. I wish our neighbours would develop
they are. actually, at this moment the average Ethiopian has more money than the average Sudanese person and has the fastest growing economy in the world. It just Tigray really with this conflict and in that only one part of it is affected. Also what I'm hearing is that the party that claims it being silent ruled the country for over 30 years and since another party took their power they have been trying to gain it back. Also it likely this would end earliest by the end of the month and at most the end of the year which is a month. most of the people in Tigray don't even like the party so it going to be hard for them to put up a fight.

It is definitely ethnic cleansing. I am Ethiopian not belonging to any of these ethnicities. But what the world need to know is every Tigrian in the country in being profiled even getting named by state media. These include
1. No Tigree can leave the country with out showing their ethnicity.
2. Many Tigray owned businesses are are ordered to be closed immediately.
3. No phone,no oil,no medicine,internet and as of yesterday electric power plant in Tigray in bombed.
4. No flight in and out of Tigray.
5. Every Tigray in all part of Ethiopia is on alert fearing for the worst.

Apparently the "junta" was elected overwhelmingly during their election to be their leaders. It doesn't look like surgical to me, when the Amhara armed forces are involved to get back their "land", and Eritrea is involved on the other side. Couldn't the Ethiopian security forces do some covert mission to get the few people the federal government is blaming instead of declaring a war which could easily lead to a civil war. War is not something that you can predict the outcome 100%. A small development could easily mess up Ethiopia.

What are saying? Mai Kandra and Western Tigray is not Amhara. Mai(water) is Tigrinya and Ge'ez Kandra is Tigrinya there is no word in Amharic called Kandra. Water in Amharic is wuha not Mai, Welkait,Humera, Dansha, Adi Arky and Matama have no meaning in Amharic or other south Ethiopic semitic languages. Amharic is an South Ethiopic semitic language. Tigrinya and Ge'ez are both North Ethiopic semitic languages, so we already know that Amhara and their claims to Tigray lands and Axumite heritage is not historical or legitimate.

How interesting?? The massacre was in fact targeting Amhara people who were workers in the Tigray region. It is unethical to make such a distorted report on behalf of DW news. The killers called the Samri group are a branch of the TPLF who massacred more than 1000 Amharas in one day! They checked people's ID cards to make sure they were Amhara before barbarically killing them. They then fled to Sudan and are now receiving humanitarian aid! If you're going to report something, you have a responsibility of doing so properly DW news!
