    Thanks for doing this recipe mate. Like u said. Every time someone mentioned brewing a VB or XXXX or anything like that on a homebrew page they are told to piss in a bottle or leave it in the sun for a week. I love hop bombs as much as the next home brewer but I also love tipping a few aussie lagers after mowing the lawn. Thanks again 👍

    I'm one of those people that have been roasted for asking how to make this but I really don't see why, every time I have one of those big Aussie lagers I think "This would be good if it were fresher, less preservatives and all that" And thanks to you I believe I can do it.

    Brilliant tribute to your mate Dave well done. Last summer the first year of my POR hops I got 293g so I brewed the Coopers Pale clone off the cellardwellar site but reduced the bittering and threw in the 293g wet hops at 15mins in a BIAB bag and pulled them out at flame out. It tasted like the Melbourne Bitter of old, one of the best crushable beers I've brewed and it was even well received at the local beer club (BAD Brewers - Bendigo and Districts). Dave's Bitter is going on my list to brew this summer, cheers.

    I met a guy who was a career brewer who worked for lion Nathan in Sydney brewing tooheys. I remember in a conversation we had about tooheys v VB he told me that VB was shit because they didn't use real hops but tooheys did! He reckoned the isohop they used was rubbish! I've been experimenting with this style for the last coupla years, after getting Peter Symons books, anyway before POR all they had was EKG, Fuggles (Straights) And Cluster, and the ones with the English hops are Superb, but to get that Aussie familiarity , bitter with pride and do staggered flavour additions with Straights . You'll be surprised at how good you can actually make these beers, I also use a bit of sugar@15 to dry them out for the Aussie style

      @@Jarvo325 @Random_Bsod I've had those books for a long time, but they dont really brew the beer of now, think maybe from memory the newest recipes are from the early 70s, but they are good books for sure and I read both cover to cover a couple of years ago, I did look over them before this recipe but I didnt need changing anything, I did have sugar lined up, but I was over my numbers already so didnt bother adding it, if you've seen my other videos I often add sugar just like they do in near all breweries, if a brewery says they don't they are probably lying.. As I mentioned yep cluster is a good choice, but I wanted that dank VB taste in this one, big POR lol If you were thinking of buying the books umm look they are quite similar but the last one has later beers in it at least to the 70s as mentioned the earlier book is mostly very very old recipes. They are worth a read if you're interested in historical brewing practices through the 1800- 1900s. Cheers!

    I do have one question gash. If you ferment under pressure and you intended to bottle it and bulk prime, is there a calculator that can determine what carbonation your beer has taken in if it was fermented say at 10psi and they work out how much priming sugar you would need?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  3 роки тому +1

      I'd ferment under lower pressure, just a few psi. then I'd probably let it warm up to room temp and let 99.9% of the pressure out a few times a day, just for overnight and that why it will have bugger all carbonation, otherwise its not much more than a guess. If you must ferment at higher pressure I'd probably just one carb drop, I dont really recommend bulk priming for most beers, introduces oxygen most of the time.. but if you're trying to do it under pressure and in the fermzilla, im not sure how you make sure its mixed properly without shaking the bugger and then things are gunna get real messy.. Cheers! Maybe let me know what the complete plan was

    you mentioned about people wanting to brew VB and getting mocked, I get this a lot, all of the Facebook groups have people in there talking about brewing hoppy ales, IPAs etc which I love, but I tend to get sick of the same beer and have been brewing German lagers, with Hallertau hops, something different, I asked a question and had about 20 blokes saying, "Why would you want to brew Lagers for? You might as well buy a slab of Macro Beer" but I'm not the only one, someone got on and asked about how to brew a Seltzer, My God the abuse, they accused him being gay, I no longer ask questions in facebook groups, they are just full of smart arse, know it all pricks and if you aren't brewing a IPA or a American pale ale clone, they want nothing to do with you

      Yeah its a bit of a shit fight on social media mate, too much for the group administrators to keep up with most of the time. Cheers!

    My theory is this.. anyone can brew a hoppy ale that taste good because you can hide mistakes and off flavours by adding more hops.. it takes a lot of attention to detail and patience to brew a clean, drinkable lager..

    Subscribed after the video due to the fact you're not a fuckwit snobby homebrewer. Doubt the hophead knob jockeys would tribute your mate the way you did. Legend👍👍👍👍

    I don't know if this video is informative or not because I couldn't get past the waffle and crap at the beginning of clip.
    But here is my $0.002 worth;
    If the VB is in very good condition it can be as good as any beer on the planet! I have had it about 12 times in the last 40 years but most of the time it's been done left on a truck in the sun too long... I gave up drinking it in the early 80s.
