  • Today Joe visits the Hermann Farm in Hermann, Missouri. This is a living history farm originally settled in 1839.
Darryl Coates is our tour guide for hte day. He is the Land and Facilities Manager at the farm.
The farm was settled by George Husmann, who emigrated from Germany in 1839. Husmann would soon become the preeminent 19th Century expert on America’s grapes and wines. Husmann was instrumental in the development of both the Missouri and California grape industry. He was also instrumental in regenerating the French wine industry after a serious blight. He collected over 10 million roots from farms in Missouri, shipped them to France and traveled there to teach them how to graft the French vines on the American root stock (which was resistant to the blight).
The farm is now used as an educational center for teaching younger people and families.
We see the Tradesman Barn which houses a
    Carpenter Shop
    Tinsmith Shop
    Broom Factory
    Rope Making Area
Darryl shows us the various stages in rope making.
Then we look in on the tinsmith shop.
Darryl shows us the German 4-square garden. The squares traditionally grew
    1 - Medicinal Plants
2 - Plants for making dyes
    3 - Vegetables
    4 - Herbs for cooking
There was a trading post on the site in the 1790s. It was run by a French woman, Polly Phillips, who was married to a Native American. It was also the original Post Office. There was also a tavern in the building which was used to house people in the winter before their homesteads were ready for occupying.
We see some beautiful antique sleds with wooden runners and a buckboard wagon.
Darryl also shows us a 300 year old Hudson Bay Company blanket that is marked in a way to indicate it took 4 beaver pelts in trade. the building is filled with antique furniture
We go out into the fields where we meet Pat and Jane, two 16 year old Percheron Jenny mules.
We visit the Kohlmeier barn. which is a large loose hay barn now filled with antique equipment for farming and other jobs around the farm. We see some antique wagons.
Lastly we visit a kitchen with a large fireplace. Darryl shows us how the adjustable pot hangers work and various other cooking equipment.
The farm has many events for families throughout the year. Check it out at

400 head of cabbage? No wonder they had to salt brine ferment it! Great-grandma made sauerkraut and cheeses.

Why is the quality of this video so poor. I usually can expect better than this from rural heritage! It was a really interesting video but spoiled somewhat by the poor quality!
