Thanks for the video Pat! Try planting an onion between your potatoes if it is dry, that way the onions will make the eyes on the potatoes water themselves! LOL
I wish my tractor was small enough to use a middle buster :( Such a useful device.... Your field looks great! I look forward to see how your crop worked out. We had a horibble late freeze that messed everything out here in N. CA. Planted over 1500 potatoes and ended up with about 75 plants :( :(
That really sucks, can't control the weather unfortunately. Lots of people tell me we plant too late, but that is the biggest reason, it's not unusual for us to get a late frost. Some areas around us got a frost in mid June this year, but it didn't get our valley.
Two questions: 1) if I recall correctly you also use your middle-buster/potatoe plow to "dig" your potatoes, correct? How deep are you running the plow to make the furrow in order to be able to use the same plow to dig below the tuber and without chopping them? Are you putting it all the way down or on a set position on you control lever? 2) I see what looks like a couple of row markers that ride along the edge of the previous furrow? Are those homemade or is that an option/product you got somewhere? I planted about 180 kennebec seeds about 8 days after you posted this video. Looking for signs of life soon!
1. Yes I do use the middle buster for harvest. We only plant a few inches deep and then build the hills up. For harvest I run the plow as deep as it will go, probably about 6-8" deeper than when I make the furrows. 2. Those are Danish S tines, their purpose is to loosen up the soil where my tire tracks are, so it is not compacted when I hill. Eight days, you should see signs of life any day, I usually hill the first time about 2 to 3 weeks after harvest, depending the weather. Then I'll hill again about 7-10 after the first hilling. Once they blossom we spray them with Bravo, a fungicide, then it's just a waiting game until they're ready for harvest.
@@ElkCreekAcres Thanks for the reply. 1) do you know what position you set the control lever to when you make the furrows? I have a 2038r as well, so your setting should be transferable. 2) I should have clarified, the row markers I was asking about were on the middle-buster, looked like a horizontal bar with some sort of wire drag that lined up with the edge of the previous furrow? 3) what is the specific purpose of the Bravo treatment? Beyond the obvious "killing fungus" what is the specific issue that it addresses? Thanks!
@@brucea9556 I'm not sure on the exact position of the rockshaft when I'm furrowing, sorry. Oh, that was a make shift row marker set to 40", but I ended up just going by my tire tracks from the previous row, that seemed to work better. I'll provide a link for Bravo, we use it strictly for the plant health. www.syngenta.ca/Productsdetail/Bravo-ZN
@@ElkCreekAcresWow, was this guy expecting Steven Spielberg? We're lucky to live in a time where virtually any information we want can be found for free. Any info you provide to us is much appreciated, regardless of how you filmed it. I have a question regarding your fertilizer please. You said you use 6-6-24. That's not a typo, is it? Haha. I can't seem to find that fertilizer but I've found 6-24-24. Could you tell me which product you use or put a link to it? Thank you so much! Mike Knox, western Albany county, NY
@@mikeouimet567 Haha, I think some people expect Hollywood quality from UA-cam. The 6-6-24 was a typo, 6-24-24 is what use as recommended from our seed supplier, I can't believe nobody has questioned that before this. We have been having trouble finding it now, so a 5-20-20 is probably what we'll use. We also use a 5-10-5 after the first hilling, we simply side dress the hills with that, then on the second hilling it turns it into the hills nicely.
Helpful thanks !!!
Glad we could help.
Nice job planning Field looks great great job
Thanks Dean, this soil is the best in the valley.
@@ElkCreekAcres it is awesome that is great Great job
Nice job. You have your routine down pat.

I take that into advisement 😉
😂
Great video, Patrick. The soil looks good and I certainly hope you get that needed rain.
Thanks Rod, this soil is the best we have, rain will put my mind at ease.
@@ElkCreekAcres I'm sure it will. 🌧
Love the simplistic sophistication of that furrowing process! Satisfying to watch.
Thank you!!
Cannot wait to eat them 🥔🥔
I had a beagle the girls names Dixie when she was a pup,, one of the best rabbit dogs I ever hunted over
We had a beagle (pure breed) but she died at 5 years old from a heart decease, Dixie is her replacement.
@@ElkCreekAcres Like losing one of the kids aint it
@@skeets6060 absolutely, hit me a lot harder than expected, but I've never lost an animal in the prime of their life.
What does those triangle spiked things on your green covering attachment do ?
Running directly behind the rear tire tracks are two S tines with 7" cultivator points to loosen the soil where the tractor drives.

U don't have no tree routs.a lot of potatoes
No sir, not in this field.
You are a good farmer but a bad filmmaker. Gotta get close ups shots with explanation as to how you plant them potatoes!!!
It’s a work in progress, I’m definitely going to try and showcase the prep and planting process this year.
