  • Menstrual cups are going to stain. You can either learn to live with their new appearance or freshen them up with a few stain removal options. The easiest way to remove stains is to do a peroxide soak for 2-3 hours but some brands reccomend against this. The alternative is to use a cloth to wipe away surface stains. You can remove yellowing (not surface stains) with sunlight! As long as you are following your sanitizing routine (1x per month is best) stains are fine.

    Kim, where I live, periods are a taboo topic, and menstrual cups even more so. I started using cups a few years back and 6 people so far have switched to cups from pads because I keep raving about them. Your shorts/videos are what I share with anyone who has questions about menstrual cups/want to try them out. Your content with the models is really helpful (especially when we do not have sex ed and talking about anatomy gets a little awkward!). Thank you sooo much!!!

      You're going to do great! We are all here to support you, maybe not in person but from afar! Will your new store also have a website to purchase from?
      This way, your online store and your up and coming brick and morter store both get the attention they both deserve.
      I know a lot of people love supporting you and would love to purchase from both, the online and physical store. You have been working so hard and I'm sure we would all love to help support both stores. If there is any small business owner who deserves this, it is you. For all you have done to help all of us we want to be able to help be a part of your success!!
      Again I am so very happy for you and you deserve this! I know you will do great!
      Much love to you Kim

    Kim, I love your videos! I initially found you through a review about the Flex Disc and found the Hello Disc. Which is a GAME CHANGER!! I now have both and prefer the Hello because of the tabs. Last month was the first time I used a disc for my period and holy crap! I’m almost mad that I didn’t find you sooner, like 10-15 years ago. Anyway thanks for informing all of us! Love it ❤

    I have been using menstrual cups since 2011. I have been actually storing my cups in hydrogen peroxide, in the shower. I have two cups I currently use: fleurcup (lavender) and meluna mini (teal). I keep them in a gum container (the kind that has a lid that's supposed to be for the cup holder in your car). I always keep in the small cup and use the larger one for my period. They are continually being cleaned. Every once in a while, I change out the peroxide and clean the container. I wouldn't hesitate to do this with any brand cup, and it always removes the stains.

    Thank you for giving some recommendations that actually work! Everyone else online seems to only ever recommend vinegar or baking soda (or both), and in my experience that rarely works for stubborn stains. I wish websites that sell these would give a heads up to customers about the colours: when I bought my first cup, I got an orange one and the brownish stains on the orange looked so gross I eventually gave up and bought a black cup. I'm a bit confused why they would even sell white, clear, yellow or orange options given how they are going to age. Makes sense for your channel for demonstration purposes, but not for consumers really. It was a bit sad because a big selling point is how long they can last, so you don't want to replace them before the end of their lifetime for cosmetic reasons (and it's also expensive).
    BTW, in Europe it can be pretty hard to get hydrogen peroxide, it's not a standard cleaner. I've had no problem getting it off Amazon, but regular supermarkets/drugstores don't usually sell it, at least not in the UK/Germany.

    • @apffh
      @apffh Місяць тому +1

      You may find it under a different name, such as oxygenated water or something similar. I don't know about other european countries, but in Spain it is extremely easy to find in any pharmacy or supermarket, since it's commonly used as an alternative to rubbing alcohol.

    Another option could possibly be denture cleaning tablets, if it's hard to get your hands on hydrogen peroxide in your country. I'm not sure how those would work for silicone so it's perhaps best to test carefully and accept some risk that they might damage the silicone. They usually have some bleaching agents in it that are pretty good for stubborn stains.

    Hello i have a little problem with my menstrual cup. This my third time using a menstrual cup on my period and the experience is great. There is only thing troubling me. I usually bleed heavily on my first and second day, with the second day being the heaviest. I can wear a small menstrual cup capable of holding 15ml of blood for 8 hours but on the second day, my cup only holds 7ml of blood for 4 hours before leaking. I always check the position of cervix, use the punch-down fold and have tried various positions and angles. I've always used a single position and angle of insertion on all days of my period and never experience leakage with the exception of my second day. Any advice on how to stop the leakage is greatly appreciated.
    P.S I'm a college student and am not comfortable with changing in public areas so i switched to menstrual cups. I usually have lectures for 7 hours and 2 hours of traveling to and from my college. Thus the leakage and short time frame of 4 hours is quite troublesome for me.

    Have you tried white vinegar? I watched a video recomending it to avoid stains. I think it was for Merula Cup, but I'm not sure.

    • @lachouette_et_le_phoque
      @lachouette_et_le_phoque Місяць тому +2

      I've definitely tried vinegar (hot and then leaving overnight), baking soda (separately, and also together with vinegar just in case the reaction does anything), scrubbing etc. Very little improvement once the stains are on there, and vinegar is honestly a pretty weak cleaner, as a weak acid. I found it easier to just buy a black cup so the stains are not visible!

    Do you have any recommendations on responsible disposal of these silicone products when they are in need of being replaced? I think I heard years ago about a company in Canada that will accept and recycle silicone products like menstrual products and other intimate devices ( trying to be kind to YT restrictions and shy readers).

    It's really shameful that companies are making and selling cups that come in a variety of colors, especially the awful clear ones, knowing that their customers like them in large part due to the fact that they are supposed to be Eco Friendly, but no one wants to use such an intimate item when it degrades to such a point that the discoloration becomes absolutely disgusting to look at let alone touch, or God forbid have in a bathroom where someone else might see it.
    And this is unfortunately nothing new. It is a horrendous business practice known as Planned Obsolescence, and it started in the early 1930s (at which time they called it something else). Yet it is blantlently still being practiced by companies globally and in all different products.
    So yes that is definitely something to think about when considering buying any product in general.
    And BTW I have been using hydrogen peroxide as not only a safe and effective cleaner for surfaces, but I find it truly is the best way to quickly and completely remove blood stains from fabrics and clothing and it doesn't damage or fade the garmets or other items like bed sheets, bath towels, at all. Just make sure that you do NOT let any warm water get onto a blood stain on any type of fabric, because that alone will set the stain in. Use cold water only, and a stiff brush with hydrogen peroxide and a dash of elbow grease to quickly remove blood stains.
    Sorry for the long essay here, just hope this information will be helpful to somebody somewhere at some point in time 🙂

    • @PeriodNirvana
      @PeriodNirvana  Місяць тому +5

      The first silicone cups were clear most likely because colorant wasn't tested in the product yet, not for planned obsolescence. We also see a lot of brands staying with clear because consumers prefer a dye-free option. I've been in this business for over 10 years and have never been told or been given the impression brands choose lighter colors or clear as a tactic to increase sales. It's more or less just a brand identity/marketing opportunity. The 1930's/1940s brand Daintette was made of rubber and dyed green to match their brand colors (long before the FDA was involved in period product regulation) but by the 1980s the FDA was involved so the rubber Keeper was just brown, the DivaCup was clear, and not until around 2010 do you see dyed silicone cups.
      The tragedy of our industry is that the products last for 10 years (discolored or not) and this becomes a hindrance to running a sustainable and profitable company. This is why the first mainstream reusable cup brand of note, Tassette, stopped making their cup and introduced a new "one time use" option, Tassaway. It was their way of trying to make cups popular while also getting return customers. Like it or not, companies need profit to run and this is why so many sustainable brands introduce accessory items to help them survive, like wipes and washes and other consumables. I'm happy to tell folks to use their products as long as they are in good shape but also happy when people replace a bit sooner if they choose because it does help the businesses. Hope that clarifies a few things.

      Oh wow, I didn't know this, it definitely makes sense. Thank you for the clarification. And I must say that I was genuinely a bit surprised to see the conditions of the used items before you gave them a HP bath but was not at all surprised to see the results. HP really is amazing, it would be cool if the brand that you used in this video sponsored you 🙂 (I know that is highly unlikely, just a thought though).
      Again thanks for all of the information.
      And Good 🍀Luck with opening your store!
