  • The “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair” director Schoenbrun is back at Sundance for the world premiere of A24’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” starring Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine. The trio dropped by the IndieWire Studio presented Dropbox to discuss the film, which centers on two ‘90s teenagers obsessed with a TV show and its mythology.

So excited for this movie. After "We're All Going to the World's Fair" came out I was on board for anything Jane Schoenbrun did. And this looks so wonderful. So excited to see Justice and Brigette in this!

I'm not trans and I've always been an advocate for trans rights but I've never been able to understand what it felt like to be trans. This movie was so personal and impactful in helping me understand what it must be like to live with this feeling and because of pure circumstances, not being able to understand what is going on inside. It's a funny line, but the line that stood out to me was when Owen was asked about his sexuality and he said, "I don't know, I think I just like TV shows." It really hit hard for me. So unsure of who they were because they had no concept of what being trans is that they can only relate to their sexuality through the Pink Opaque show.

i hate that this issue (for lack of a better word ugh) is seen in such a negative way. people are born differently then the “norm “ all the time (my daughters heart doesn’t work like others my identical twin boys have a small body part missing. not my business to say not noticeable)
some people are born with opposite body parts to their sexual preferences etc (as per understanding what and why ).... done .... why is someone’s sex or sexual preference so controversial. we aren’t here for people to discover if we are a possible sexual conquest 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

as someone in the closet I cannot tell you how visceral this movie was for me. I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about this movie. I just watched it and I can't even think straight. I get how it would seem campy and silly to the outsider, but I felt pure horror and recognition.

As a trans person that line for me reminded me of so many actual conversations ive had before coming out, the immediate deflection and moving to another topic is so sadly real. Anyway i do think this is a great film for allies to understand a portion of the trans experience. This movie is about discovering that you're transgender or nonbinary, and the existential horror that comes with it.
Lmao i just needed to talk about it because ive cried multiple times today after watching this, it really means so much to me.

Justice Smith’s performance in this is award worthy.

*Cracking noises?* Jk I think that's because this movie does an INCREDIBLE job of communicating that trapped, deeply compressed, heart tearing feeling us queer people go through repressing are tre selves from the world and just how quiet yet terrifying and dreadful it can be.

The plight of trans people is something we all experience to a lesser degree - if not about gender, we all have to figure out who we are and how we can exist in the world. We all need to deal with the separation between who society sees us as, who we feel we are inside, who we pretend to be and how we want to be going forward.
It's just that we are in the privileged position of being able to put our attention elsewhere.
It's actually trans peoples relateability I think, that makes them so persecuted. They remind others of things they would rather not deal with and have the privilege to ignore, where trans people cannot.
We are all transitioning in some sense, from children to adults, from who our parents think we are to who we really are, from religious upbringings into deconstruction, from political dogma to emancipating ideas... And so the trans experience is relatable to everyone.
      Well, everyone sane.

I firmly agree that tiky toky doesn’t cause this kind of dissociative shifting - kids who don’t want to be themselves will find a way. That said mass social technology clearly changes and accelerates the worst and best of social problems! Phone bad, but we didn’t start the fire.

    SPOILER
When Owen cut himself open to see what was in him in a desperate attempt to escape the reality in which he was dying, then immediately covered it up with his uniform and began apologizing to everyone around him while wheezing and being ignored….really struck a cord with me. It’s such a sad yet honest visual representation of what it feels like to force yourself into a role to appease the world around you even when you feel like the real you is suffocating. Or at least, that’s my interpretation

the lack of acceptance within the movie itself and how that effects its characters is proof of why acceptance is important. it’s also about self acceptance, Owen is in denial about himself the entire movie and winds up completely lost as like a 40 year old. If he had been able to accept himself, he would’ve never reached that breaking point

@@DJVidesothe show represents him and Maddy’s ‘real life’ as queer people (Maddy being gay and Owen being trans.) They both fixate on the show as teenagers because it is showing them who they should really be and it gives them an escape. Maddy running away and and putting herself through hardship in order to come out the other side as her true self mirrors the experience of a gay person running away from an unaccepting home or town and risking homelessness and even death in order to live as their true self. But Owen was too sheltered to recognize that he was also meant to be in the pink opaque, which happens a lot with trans kids who are too sheltered to know what being trans is even if they are trans which causes them a lot of confusion and suffering, as you see with Owen. Maddy realizes that Owen never saw the last episode of the show and comes back to tell him everything and bring him back with her, which could represent her realizing that he is too sheltered to realize he is trans so she returns to tell him about being queer and bring him somewhere more accepting. But ultimately he is too scared to go with her because he is telling himself that it isn’t real, or that it’s crazy, or that it’s too difficult or scary to do (the same reasons many trans people don’t come out.) He ends up living the rest of his life wondering what could have been if he had gone with her and lived the life he was meant to live, while Isabel suffocates underground. This represents him wondering what could have been if he accepted his real self as a trans woman and decided to come out, but now it’s almost too late and his true self will soon die with him. At the end you see him open where his heart is and see that the tv show (representing his trans identity) was always there inside him. But it seems he still doesn’t have the courage to live the life he was meant to live.
I tried my best to explain, I know it’s kind of rambley but I hope it makes sense 🙏🏻

@@w0rm.f00d This is a typical reaction of a member of " mainstream" movie audiences, when something is made that is challenging because it is not made for them. The audience for this movie is pretty limited, and for some reason they dislike that from time to time a movie is made that is not made with them in mind.
90 % of movies are. This is not one of them. That should be ok, but form some reason,....for some,... it existing and being appreciated by others,.... is not enough for them. I love that this film was made for me. I mean,...I am so used to seeing films made for wider audiences,... those are fine,.... but... this was made for _me_ .
Instead of thinking that " ok, this wasn't made for me, no wonder I cannot get into it." they either think that there is something wrong with the film,.... or the makers of the film. It's actually really ironic that there's comments like this in videos about the film because there's a very specific scene in the film that's about how people can see queer pain and how repressing queer identity hurts people and that most people would rather just pretend to not see it. They deliberately ignore queer pain because they find it inconvenient or illegitimate. Instead most people will look away from the pain, even if they have to make it obvious that they're doing so, and then if they acknowledge it they'll act like the person experiencing such pain is crazy for feeling that pain in the first place.
