- Inspiring women to empower computer science. Between 2000 and 2009, there was a 79 percent drop in the number of first-year undergraduate women considering computer science, even as products such as Facebook, Twitter, Angry Birds, etc. began making technology 'cool' again. And so, we have been told, time and time again, we need more women in technology. But we're not entirely convinced by the op-eds and panel discussions. Is there really a difference? The greatest technology companies of our time -- Apple, Google, Facebook -- have been successfully founded and run by men. And they seem to be doing a pretty good job.
she++: The Documentary (12 min: TV-14 DL) energetically proclaims 'Hello, World' after following smart, creative, and trailblazing technologists hard at work in hi-tech. This short documentary collects research and inspirational pieces of Silicon Valley's unsung heroes to galvanize us to explore our potential as 'femgineers'. I'm in high school and took my first cs class last year. At first i felt super intimidated because there was only two girls in the class and all of the guys seemed to have been coding for forever. It was my teacher that encouraged me and inspired me to continue programming which has kept me interested in computer science. I encourage all girls to get out there and take a cs class, it can be difficult but is very rewarding
I started to learn to code not even a year ago, I started with free online classes and during that year I made several webpages, I am creating web app and I started encouraging more girls into learning how to code. It is actually quite easy way to make some money, if you are student, instead of taking boring low paid jobs as waitress I can create a website:-). I am not saying I am a web developer and that I know everything- so far I know very little but even with this very little I can create big things and it motivates me to learn more and more. I just with I started when I was younger...

Which online programs did you use?
My former manager initially had a lot of resistance. She was amazing at automation that blew people out of the water. We also had a girl who was a QA engineer who could fix most problems in less than 5 minutes. Her nickname was Bot because her style was ruthlessly technical.
I want to become a mobile app developer someday. I'm currently working full time to go to school for a BA in Comp sci. For now, I'm learning the basics of Coding from sites like Treehouse to have a basic understanding of programming so i can develop a portfolio . Also, thinking about joining a meetup group in my area which consists of professional/unprofessional female programmers to network with. I'm working my ass off but it'll pay off in a few years. I'm committed to making it happen :)

Who cares about how smart you are relative to others? Why waste time worrying about things you cannot change? Just be the best you can be. Most importantly, enjoy what you do :)
John von Horn I totally agree. I used to feel like I'm not smart enough. But, then i realized I had bad friends who made me feel that way. If I ever speak to them about my goals in life they look at me like I'm crazy and tell me I'll probably hate my job, or having this kind of knowledge won't really get me a good job. I don't talk to them anymore. :p
I'm a male CS student and I relate best with the female students. I think it's because I hadn't started programming until I was at university, and I don't fit the CS stereotype. Thank you for helping my recognize how diversity is a strength in CS as well; I need reminding sometimes. I'll definitely be sharing this inspiring doc with others!

I love this video. I started learning programming for 3 months now. As a women who has never tried it before it let me tell you...it is hard, very hard but I am determined not to give up!
I am really glad that more and more people are attracted to CS as it's so much creative and logical field. I am a student of Computer Science as well and m really really proud of it. I think when there are more coders in the world the global communication between different people across the world is possible leading to more development :D.
This is exactly why I have a goal to expose my 5 year old daughter to a minimum of 1 hour of computer time each day. IT WILL = CAREER$!

My AP Computer Science class in high school has a pretty balanced male-to-female ratio, which is a good sign. However, I go to a very racially diverse school, and the class has no under-represented minorities (Blacks and Latinos), so I don't know what to think of it.

I took a programming class in my high school and was super intimidated by the fact that I was one of the few girls out of the class. I dropped it a week or so later and replaced it with home economics, which I hated even more. :/ I program in my free time now but it sucks because I have a terrible case of impostor's syndrome.

At least teachers and professors are encouraging young women to be coders. I'm a black man and ALL my Professors and teachers, especially women discourage me from being a programmer. All My professors told me to drop the class, and I had a female student in my class who was such a party animal who didn't even know how to use windows and the teachers pushed her to stay in the computer major and she's doing fine. Black Boys have it far far worst. We should have a Black++.
Nope, its about the fascination of taking an idea, write some code and watching the bits & bytes produce a response. The long debugging hours, the feel of typing away long scripts. Building complex logic and interfaces. Myself im a economics major, but self taught to code Python,C, JavaScript. As sad is it sounds im fascinated by computing as a whole. I believe that's why theres a lot of men in CS. The fascination over Computers as compared to the $$$, its tht fascination tht leads to great creations & companies

Rosie the Rivetor: War production, when the War dept had unlimited resources and power, life affected communities directly - husbands were gone, restrictions in goods, entire communities affected. Soldiers being killed in staggering numbers.
"females in tech roles" - Youth just want a degree. They want easy work. Peers are sparse. Role models are sparse and special cases. Companies react to "Women in tech" media stories by show casing and parading special hires.
And as this video verifies, foreigners out number local labor.

How is computer science applied in fashion? 7:18 I'm geniunly curious
Amanda all shopping apps for fashion need to be made by programmers. (Buying clothes from say forever 21 website/app). They also need algorithms to figure out what people are buying or looking for the most in searches etc. you need technology in every aspect of life.
I' sorry guys but I find some of your comments really.... sexist. To claim that most women are dolls who like money, cars etc. and hate science while guys are so clever and all want to become scientists is just stupid! I have known many guys who were more interested in drinking than studying any kind of science. And I have known very brilliant and intelligent girls (by the way I am one of them ;-) with big potential who were simply intimidated by the traditional gender roles. So what we need is showing girls that they can succeed in computer (and any other) science as well as guys. But what we need even more, is a fair system afterwards, when these girls become mothers, so that they can continue their career and follow their passion.

It has been confirmed that the proportion of females in traditionally male areas is LESS in the most *'gender equal'* countries. Such as Norway or Sweden.
In these countries, the gender gaps INCREASE in occupations such as engineering (10% women) and nursing (almost 90% women).
So if stereotypes are negated by education and affirmative action, and if people have more choice due to massive socialist policies and support, *larger differences* result.

You don't have to be good at math to be good programmer. Yes you will need it to pass throught your math class at university, but C is a good grade too. Good programmer knows the language and how to use it.

while I do think that it is important to include more women in the tech world and I don't agree most comments on this video, I think that this documentary is enorsing the cause of the exact problem it is trying to counter. The problem is not necessarily that many tech people are nerdy and solitary, that is a stereotype. The problem is that in western society everybody is so superficial that he won't give something that is associated with such a stereotype a chance. If you endorse thinking in boxes like that you won't solve this problem, you will only make it worse.

women take all the tiny little problems and form them into one big problem and trying to solve it. it's how they function. they always work in the context of the bigger picture. men break apart things, not just the big problems, even the tiny problems get broken down if the resulting "problem size" is smaller. computer science does not incorporate the first thinking pattern, so in order for a woman to become a programmer up to a certain point she has to learn to think like a man.
szeredai akos Your thinking is rigid. We don't know how much of our thinking patterns are learned, and how much are innate --- it's impossible to know, since we treat boys and girls differently from the day they're born.
If a woman naturally thinks of problems in sections, would you say that's just the way she thinks, or would you insist she has "a man's thought process"? What about vice versa?
themetr0gn0me dont get me wrong, the idea is not general and does not apply at an absolute 100% degree to a 100% of cases. but if you soak a brain in more testosterone throughout an entire evolutionary line it tends to differ from the ones that are not that saturated. its just a hypothesis based on my personal experience, it reflects what is, not what can be.
obviously both male and female brains have the benefit of a high degree of plasticity (1.5 kg of neurons tend to do that) and no individual will form fully to its gender implied paradigm. but there is a gender implied predisposition regardless if its formed during life experience or by genetics.
- i'd probably say "unusual thinking for a woman". does it really matter? you cant talk about tendencies by singling out one example.
that said, there is plenty of room for diffuse thinking in programming even though most languages are set up to favor the focused mind.

Computer Science can be hard, so can life. Though unlike so many other aspects of life, computers don't give you an advantage for being pretty, delicate, or 'special'.
The computer doesn't care who writes the code, boy, girl, trans, alien, etc. If they do it correctly it works, if they do not it does not work. This must be difficult for some to understand. The computer expects the code to make sense. It does not know to give girls a special exception for being female (like many professors and universities do).
Also women don't have a penis, therefore they only have 10 digits to type with. This puts them at a significant disadvantage. Which is why the extra help is necessary for them to adapt to the field.

Women are strong, clever, independent and are just as capable as men. Any thing a man can a women can do. The reason they are not a lot women in computer science is that they have no passion for it. It does not matter whether it is a law or mathematics if the person has no passion for it they would not do it. I love computers, I am fascinated with the way they work, I love reading books, taking computers abouts, that is the reason I started learning how to program at a very young age, in fact I did even know of the name computer science all I wanted was to take a computer apart seen how it works, what program make it run ever since I saw my first computer at the age of 5.
If you have to force someone to do program then they are bound to drop out. Women or men when they want to learn to program they think about all the things thery would like to create which is good because they are already thinking abstract. But when it come to refine the details they realize in order to get the program to work they have to write an x amout of code, even worse they have to create an algorithm. I don't get it, why are these women encouraging more people to join the field and become competition for themselves? Don't they realize that tech jobs are just as bound by the law of supply and demand as anything else? It is only a high paying field because demand is high and supply is low, if we were to start getting a flood of new CS graduates then suddenly the CS degree isn't worth all that much anymore.

That is because women, do not like computer's in a real tech field. But a very few small portion do. Computers are more of a guy's thing, just like video-games and car's. Women use a computer for like UA-cam, twitter and Facebook. And writing in word and a music player. But some women, do more with a computer it just depends. But mostly guys like me, are more in depth and in tune with computer's in all areas. Guys love tech, and most girls just love money, makeup, doll's and cute dress's with shoes, and nice cars to drive.

I tried to fit into the stereotype of playing with dolls when I was a child and I found it boring.
Also, "fake it till you make it" is a really bad idea. People in the tech industry are not forgiving to the fakers. Only encourage those who are interested, no matter what sex, race, country they belong to. It is better to have one great programmer rather than having 10 bad ones.
The only reason women get into computers is to go live on twitch and strip for money in front of thirsty gamers.
And as soon as you hire a woman, boom your signing a contract that on average entitles women to 18+ months paid leave (2.5 children). In a sector that moves so fast, that is extremely offputting
