    Reading some of these comments,...actually not comments at all but real critics out there!!!!!
    My own opinion,...Eric & Ray are doing this, for 2 reasons, because they can,...and because they want to. Like a lot of other videos,.".don't watch if you're offended", kind of scenario.

    I did this exact kit to build a M38 sporty a few years back. Today I used it to drop a big MN doe at 180 yards. The gun hits right where I aim and 1” groups at 100 yards is common with PPU ammo. Great kit and this video was helpful in the process. Thanks!

      Ha too funny, I did an M44 polish factory 11 carbine few years back as well. I used the camo stock from ATI. I also camo wrapped the barrel to protect the bluing. No scope though. And I also took buck 2 days ago up here in Canada. Its my favorite hunting rifle and it always hits on point. I used Sellier & Bellot soft point ammo myself. Does your kick like an enraged donkey? Mine sure does.

    Smith sights target front sight and a Finnish trigger sear was the beat upgrades I’ve done to mine. Even in full wood it makes a very effective hunting rifle. Oil soaked rags arround the barrel under the barrel bands and rest floated.

    just got done doing the same build on my mosin a few days ago. Havent got a chance to shoot it yet but think it should shoot great.My brother is a machinist and has a mill & lathe at his house so we had a little easier time cutting & recrowning the barrel.I tig welded
    the new bolt handle to the bolt instead of using the machine screw supplied.We had a fun time doing it. He actually is planning on buying one to do also.

    i took one of my mosins and installed the bolt and sight rail kit. it works ok, but I need a better scope. in total with taking your time and putting in the extra little care needed to square the mount beffor drill and tap and to ensure you are going into the reciever with the drill and not the chamber, it takes 3 hours and 95$ after tax and shipping. meaning for just under 200$ you can have yourself a very nice and hard hitting deer rifle that has the power of a .30-06

      One day our grandkids are gonna curse us because they won't be able to find a Mosin that hasn't been butchered. I understand that it is his rifle, with which he can do as he pleases. But the way I look at it, we don't really own these historic military arms, we are just caretakers. I have been collecting milsurp guns since I was a teenager, and I love them dearly. It is truly amazing to hold a rifle that was fired from a trench in 1916, or one that was shouldered during the Franco-Prussian War. And I am lucky enough to have a son who is just as fascinated by history as I, so I know they won't be chopped up and spray painted. There are so many modern sporting arms out there to use if a person wants to go kill Bambi, I really wish people would stop butchering our collective human history.

      key word in ur comment was SURPLUS.. meaning excess. also the reason these guns are so damn cheap. stop whining about what someone else does with their money. u wanna put an end to it, buy all the damn Mosins and u can do whatever u want with em. sounds like u will pri just lock em away and let them collect dust cuz for some reason u think they are inherently valuable.

      @derekbrewer9681 8 років тому +2

      Relax, I happily shoot my mosins, but considering how expensive this project is your far better off buying a modern bolt then making an essentially worthless sporter. Especially if you want to use telescopic sights, the mosin's split bridge receiver makes a proper mount an expensive proposition where as a savage axis come with a rail from the factory.

    • @WhiskeyNovember888
      @WhiskeyNovember888 8 років тому

      +Derek Brewer so, u whine and complain about what someone else does with their money for no reason but I have to relax? mmkay.. anyway, u r right about 2 things u said. except for the cost of the kit. that really isn't true at all. even with the cost of the ATI kit and the gun u r still under a savage axis most everywhere u look. and the axis comes with a garbage Bushnell banner. trust me when I say they need upgraded. I literally just shot my daughters axis 243 with it this weekend for the first time. it's coming off immediately. that right there justifies the cost of the scope here

    Depends how far you go. I have mosin that was shortened to 22.2" w/ a 11 degree crown. It can acheive 2" groups with silver tips and 1" w/ handloads.
    My 16.5" barrel mosin is harder because I have to fight with incomplete powder combustion so I have to develope loads that uses faster burning powder. I can get 1" groups with careful handloads, but I have to go as far as using match primers, weigh all casings and bullets and make sure all cartridge lengths are the same.

    Well you can get reproduction PU scopes for the mosin for $350, that scope, was designed for that specific rifle and load, it does not have the usual MOA adjustments on elevation, rather it has a nob with the range. No calculations really needed once the rifle is sighted in. It's an amazing setup, and beautiful in a refinished original stock.

    Other than ergonomics, the length of Mosin-Nagant barrels was a hold over from black-powder era firearms, which is typical of rifles from that time. BP burns slower than smokeless, which means the barrel needs to be longer for the projectile to achieve proper velocity. Since smokeless burns faster, internal pressure will drop below optimal through a longer barrel, which means internal friction will decrease velocity and affect accuracy. For mil-surp 7.62x54mmR around 21-24" is optimal length.

    An idea for your gunsmith friend and his vise, don't worry it's cheap. Go to home depot and a piece of 90 degree angle aluminum bar and cut two pieces out of it close to the size of your vise, its softer the steel/iron and cheaper then brass. Go to the fabric store and get some real leather and GOOD glue. Glue to the aluminum and cut to straps out of it, rap the straps around till they are tight and mark. cut holes in the marked area and insert a fastening device, and you got none marking clamp.

    I have a suggestion for measuring after you remove rod @ 28 3/4 if you want 20 inches subtract the 20 inches from the 28 3/4 that leaves 8 and 3/4 inches just measure from crown of barrel 8 3/4 inches and mark.

    Great video, I have seen what a POS that bolt and mount kit are. They are known to strip out. I used a brass-stacker scout mount, cut my bolt and silver welded a bent bolt in its place.

    The barel of the 91/30 serries tend to be thin causing the barrel to ocilate also known as barrel whip. Shortening the barrel helps reduces the leverage force the exiting bullet has on the barrel. Also the barrel is 28" or so standard which is really hard to move around w/ in tight places.

  • @Sariann16
    @Sariann16 11 років тому +1

    Omniful. These barrels are so long and flimsy that shortening them to 22-24" actually makes them more accurate with a free floated barrel. The barrel is not free floated in the original stov

    I like it. A nice basic build. Will make a great hunting rifle.
    I really need to get myself a crowning kit. I like taking broken weapons and failed projects and make something useful out of them, but I do any crowning I need to with a set if very fine files. It takes many hours of work and I can screw up easy. A few crowning bits like that seems like something I can use.

    its completely different looking now, it went from your everday mosin to looking like a remintgon 700 or other hunting rifle. i would love to have the time money and tools to make a sporter mosin, i was lucky enough to get to refinish my first mosin (and it was also my first firearm) to look like a brand new rifle. i think these rifles will always have a spot in my heart, being my first gun and what a great rifle they are for the price

    When i added the new stock to my rifle, when i tightened the barrel to the stock, i could not tighten all the way, because the bolt would not open. When i loosened the bolt, the bolt worked. I also added a stock to my SKS, it all fit good except the bayonet. It didnt have the groove for it, but it did still lock. On the bolt action the bayonet still worked good enough, but had to take out the cleaning rod and the cleaning kit in the back. But they look good. I do like wood, they stay warmer then the other type of stocks. But not so easy to hide in the woods. My new camo stocks are hard to see, hope i dont drop them and lose them. :)

    A great build for sure and I want to build something similar. But if you can afford to purchase and fire all these guns, then maybe spend more than 20 bucks on a hacksaw and get a cold saw, or at least a chopsaw for cutting barrels. The coldsaw is costly I know but far better results and easier to clean and prep the barrel afterwards. The chopsaw is a more affordable option and can be a great tool. But other than that I love this build.

    If you handload, you can get submoa groups. With milsurp, it's 2" (that is if your rifle is squared away). All you need is water and/or Hoppes #9 to get the salts out.
