    I have a DDR rescue i don"t know how old he is or his past. I have had Him for 5 and a half years, he is slowing down. When he is gone a part of me will also die, and leave a huge hole in my heart. He is a gift from God. I should be always be thankful for the time we have together.

      I agree. We had a DDR before all this ridiculous breeding program started. I didn't even see the dog except his pics. He was trained by my two maternal uncles and would eat only if my mom fed, worst case my grandpa.
      He lived for roughly 10 years and died in 1962. So, this is way back. He acted in two Indian movies and won in a dog show. He was trained like super K9. No one can go near him. He would allow only two people other than my mom side folks. He was 9 when my mom got married and she raised him since he was tiny. He would sniff my dad.
      Our house earned a nickname dog house, meaning no one can dare to enter the house.
      My mom and my uncles would spend a lot of time with him as they were all unmarried. They would say "Do you know how much work it takes to train a dog like that?"
      He would not move an inch without my uncles command. Super confident, smart, agile, amazing livliness. He was named Cesar and lived like the Roman emperor.
      Why would anyone take a good breed and develop breeds with so many health issues? Welcome to USA.
      GSD-Greatest, Smartest Dog, God's Security Dog.

      I love reading this. That's the "secret", when you get a GSD - bonding, regardless of bloodlines. But also I hear you well, when it comes to looks, the DDR definitely has the edge, so I'm sure you're seeing some fine bone structure on your dog.

    I owned a West German shepherd with Pink papers that came from a police dog. The stud / father was great and my dog Rommel was the smartest best dog I personally ever owned. He was not bite trained although I'm sure he could have done so, but he was obediently trained and he was great and a great family pet. I've trained dogs to hunt ally life and he would even hunt with me once he knew what I wanted. He always wanted to please, but he had to have a job or he had too much anxiety so I was very busy keeping him busy mentally and physically.
    The best dogs though and I hear good things about DDR dogs. ❤

      @FreddyCondo, I love the German Shepherd breed myself. The greatest breed in the world. I am on my 6th one. I just watched a video by a German Shepherd breeder and he was saying don't be fooled by the DDR or Czech name. All it is, is marketing BS! I live in Massachusetts and get all my German Shepherds from a very good breeder in New Hampshire. They are all show line dogs. They are intelligent, strong, protective, and good natured healthy dogs. My most recent is Dakota. He is all black long haired with a huge head and weighs 125 pounds. He is a knock out. I wish I knew how to send you a photo of him but I don't. Love him to death.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ One more myth. Not all showline dogs are angulated either. Many are straight back. One of my 6 were angulated, and he was as healthy as the straight backs. He could run like a Cheetah as well. Good luck with your German Shepherd. Best breed!! Freddie,

    This is a beautiful video and I hear the pain in your voice at the possibility of losing a piece of living history. Back in the day, I raised Lipizzaner horses here in the US where they are considered a threatened breed (less than 1,000). They have the same problem as DDR, a small gene pool, a long recorded history, good owners and of course a share of stupid people breeding them to other breeds. So I understand. This catches my attention because I would like to have a nice family GSD dog who is self confident enough to do beginner ring work yet kind enough to get along with my menagerie of rescue dogs. My GSD/BM rescue is doing fantastic but is on the shy side. So don’t know one DDR dog line from another. I sense that you are hoping to find a network of really good family owners who are also good handlers with good intentions. But what those good owners need is a functioning network with one or more advisors. In my time, each year the director of the Spanish Riding School visited each US region and viewed the breeding stock/youngsters presented and he stayed at the homes of the organizers. He openly graded each horse’s conformation and temperament so everyone learned what to look for in their breeding programs. Imho, rare lines/breeds can exist and grow as long as their is some sort of structure in place to help guide well intentioned owner/handler/breeders who don’t know the bloodlines or are not well educated in conformation

    • @DDRGermanShepherdDog
      @DDRGermanShepherdDog  10 місяців тому

      I totally hear you! Thank you for the fine, nicely detailed post. And by the way, I thought the Lipitzanner is a Romanian breed (Lipițan) but I know pretty much nothing about horses so I'll keep quiet 😂
      But yes, I like the way you point out the gene pool element and the structure aspect. I actually want to congratulate you on being among the very few who still see things for what they are. Gene pool and structure to work on have been taken over by money. That's the number one reason things have gotten to where they are, not just when taking GSD's, but most working dog breeds.

The Hungarian breeders told me that his line was smuggled out of Russia, im pretty sure hes a decendant of the russian breeding programs. He is very protective, large, massive neck and tail. They crossbred Laikas, Mollosers, and Ovchakras to get them larger and to survive cold. Mine is fearless. He thrives in the snow and mountains, and loves my daughters to death. main problem you are facing is keeping a proper genetical diversity. this is a common problem for each pure breed to ensure that you have no overlaps for at least four generations to be able to obtain healthy offsprings. BTW, I loved your puppies - they are great!

    • @DDRGermanShepherdDog
      @DDRGermanShepherdDog  10 місяців тому +5

      Thank you for the comment on our pups! And yes, the problem is always both found or solved in the genes. I did not want to step out of specific lines and I knew eventually things will lead me to a closed angle. But I preferred that way, than mixing the blood like crazy, like so many others have done. And look where things are today.

    This was beautiful! I grew up with a Rough Collie and a Westie. As an adult I raised a German Shepherd with no papers and a Beagle-terrier mix. Also rescued a Maltese with some treatable health problems. The last 14 years, I’ve raised a Collie-mix and a Chihuahua (both rescued) that are both nearing the end of their lives.
    The Rough Collie, the German Shepherd, and the Beagle-mix were the most gentle. All are different; all wonderfully unique dogs that lived good lives.
    I just began helping my daughter with a Cavapoo that she just rescued, and my grown son wants a German Shepherd.
    I want to steer him toward a DDR but have been tentative because of some of the videos out there. I’m glad I stumbled across this one that reaffirms my approach all along:
    Dogs are the most wonderful companions that just need the love and nurturing according to their natural temperament. First and foremost, they’re family.

    I don't know about all this east and west, but you can go look at my shorts my dog is a force to be reckoned with and I never taught her any aggression. She's trained but I never felt like I even wanted to train her in aggression because she already protects her home and her yard with her life yet I can take her anywhere. Her manners are impeccable. I have no doubt if someone broke into my house unless they had a weapon they would not leave, when she's at my gate and someone tries to baby talk her it just makes her more intense. Her whole body actually vibrates. She's not a barker but she's always watching everything. Everybody thinks she's a male. I would give my life for this dog she's a one in a billion. She's always watching. Very independent secure animal. Doesn't follow me around but always has one eye on me to see what I'm doing. Anyway I just feel I got a one in a million dog and it's a shame I'm not at her level because I feel this dog could have done anything. She's smarter than I am😂😂

    I only found out recently that there are different lines in GSDs. I watched a youtube video by a woman who is a vet, she said that there are 5 bloodlines. Also said that the DDR Shepherds are not good for pets, as they are very high in aggression. So I'm glad to come across video, better information.
    I have always admired GSDs, bought Winifred Gibson Strickland's book Expert Obedience Training for Dogs, hers were all GSDs.
    I had to call this city's (calgary) animal people when I came across a beautiful grey/black and tan GSD on the street downtown, he belonged to what looked like a crack house, but nobody was home, and the neighbours were feeding him pizza and scraps. My Standard Poodle tried to make friends, but he just ran away. He wouldn't come near me, he was very nervous, abused I'm sure -- and he had a large wound in his shoulder, so I called the City, who came at once, and it took them an hour to catch him, in the back yard of the house. He was able to hide under shrubbery, and he was so afraid. The finally got him, and I'm sure the owners never got him back again. I always felt bad for him, wished I could do more, but Calgary has really good resources for dogs.
    I've never actually bought a GSD, what with one thing and another in life, I had Standard Poodles, Airedale, huskies --- and I was worried about finding a good breeder for GSDs. It's much easier now with the internet. Plus I've got the room and the time.
    Waiting to hear from a breeder in Colorado, and glad to have more information before talking to them.
    Thank you for the video. I agree with keeping the bloodlines; you'll have more diversity then, instead of having everything focused on one or two

    I have watched this same video for 4 years now. I once wanted to get a puppy from this canine, but it took me a long time to convince the owner that I was serious. He said that it would be an honour for me to have one of his dogs as my partner at work. But COVID-19 hit hard, and It all went down the drain, all my planes, financial and personal, went to shambles. I lost my job, and the means to care for such generics the proper way. We never spoke again. I like dogs with substance, square head and strong bones, I never thought of a shepherd in terms of agility, or the so-called now days, “versatility”; a term use to discriminate shepherds from the Malinois shepherd, meaning speed physical traits. Which gives the Malinois the advantage. When the real significance of the word versatility, in the dog world, is to describe what a GSD is capable of doing.

      I don't believe that can be done - with minor exceptions, via the still existing ddr dogs, coming mainly from one bloodline. But other than that, the cz and ddr lines are hugely washes out and you can't turn things around. The LSZS influence is huge, simply huge.
      But at the end of the day that shouldn't be a thing. If or when you get a gsd, just offer him or her the best possible life and enjoy its presence, regardless of bloodlines.

    I presently have a GDR that replaced a west German standard that unfortunately lost a fight with cancer. As you indicated they are 2 very different animals and personalities. The west German for instance did not play well with others. In fact he was kind of an ass hole to be honest. The DDR is much more social with much less prey drive. That is until someone he doesn't know tries to come into my house, or tries to get too close to me. At that point he quickly regresses to a very protective fur covered bag of razor blades. One of the best dogs ive ever had. I forgot to mention, he's also a rescue.

The older it got the more folks (8/10) people assume it's a Mal, however after multiple DNA tests and research I realized it's just a czechoslovakian shepherd. Very hard mask fairly short haired and a good bit smaller and leaner. This dog will take commands all day, and then some (often times until 4 am) there is simply no turning it off. It's very clear she's genetically different than the standard German shepherd dogs

    In my part of the world when I was a younger man I was given a few examples of a family line of hounds. They were amazing dogs , a reflection of what they were bred for as the United States was coming into it's own. Hard , serious hounds with intelligence and a fast paced calmness if you can understand. These dogs are all gone now, bloodlines watered down with the latest fad to come along because the hunting they were masters of has gone away.
    Years later I had some quarter horses from a similar situation gentle, large heavy boned powerful working horses they are not gone but numbers are low & time is short as ranching changed & a different style of horse fell into fashion through marketing.
    These are deeply sad things that only certain types of people understand & feel . Please work these dogs - often - because if the work survives it will preserve the very things inside these dogs that make them so special. Good video. I remember watching it on your old channel.
    Unfortunately, I see a lot of "DDR" German Shepherds that really have hardly any work ethic and it's mainly due to people breeding their dogs just because they're DDR, and not remembering what made the DDR a DDR. Line preservation can be great, but if people are breeding away from what the line was developed for, can we really even call it the same line?
    Just my thoughts on your great video.

    • @DDRGermanShepherdDog
      @DDRGermanShepherdDog  10 місяців тому +2

      Very good point you're making. The breed is a working breed and while I understand that individuals stood out in conformation /looks and so the show line developed, things were taken to the extreme where working qualities were covered by looks. Perhaps contrary to popular belief, the ddr dogs were not all excelling in work, there were also the dogs that were bred and promoted for looks but - and this is purely my personal experience with dogs - at least the percentage of dogs excelling in civil drives /real protection, not sport, is higher in the ddr (when compared to west lines). Except for my Jessie who's almost as high prey driven as a west line dog, all my other dogs are/were calmer "by default" but very good home protection dogs. Nala was top, top material, from young age. She reminded me of Ben, my first dog back in the days, Ben was not allowing you to walk up to shake my hand unless he knew you. Nala did the same. Also she was one thick boned gsd, the only other dog I had that was thicker, was Tito.

      @@DDRGermanShepherdDog Well said.
      And when I say work, I mean any sort of work really. A dog doesn't need to have Czech line drives and energy to be successful in doing a job by any means, for example the DDR lines. Even West German Showlines can excel at work getting IGP titles.
      I've just noticed when browsing around different areas, many of these dogs have no working qualities and its because of they only care about the purity of the line. I've stated earlier that, that is fine to do, but don't sacrifice what the line was bred for, for the preservation of the line.
      It is good to see your dogs doing some civil work, and showing that they do have the ability to perform what they were bred for.

    • @DDRGermanShepherdDog
      @DDRGermanShepherdDog  10 місяців тому +3

      @@skyforgerpack3645 thank you for putting things out clear and rough. Though there is a fine connection between preserving lines and in doing so, preserving specific (working) qualities. Or else the breed wouldn't be where it's at as we speak. In order to pin down certain qualities, you need to focus on certain bloodlines. Modern breeders (let's call them that) have simply mixed the lines like crazy and outcome is well, what we see nowadays. That said, you try now and nail down certain qualities!! I mean, ok, you will get a nice pup here and there BUT AT THE COST OF HOW MANY PUPS that won't fit the job? And they will end up put to sleep or moved to several homes in the process. Trust me I know what I'm saying. This is one of the reasons I wanted to resume things online, I want to make a few points that will hopefully open some eyes.

    I am looking at a black GSD puppy now, both parents are cleared from typical joint health issues...
    the mother been used to breed police and military dogs in Denmark and is a working line, the father is also a working line.
    but what to consider as potential issues coming from labrador, Australian shepherds and Border Collies,
    - what should I make sure to look for to make sure he does not get any typical problems for a black GSD in life later on?
    - and what to make sure I take care of while he grow up now the first part of his life, so he become as mentally stable and calm to work with me in spite of guns, fireworks or screaming people , aggressive people, or anything that can scare a dog otherwise if around them?
    -what can I focus on training him in the first few months in life to give him the best chance to become a personal protection dog?
    ... thanks for getting back!

      We are talking genes, we can never pin point what is ahead. You can use the healthiest parents and still have issues in the produced pups down the line, simply because of genes. That's where breeders with healthy brains do their job and their best to avoid health issues. I am saying that because some major problems - like bloat and HD will likely always hunt the GSD. And Labradors and etc, generally the medium to large breeds. I guess your best thing is to look at what those two specific dogs have produced already. It's like reading the reviews before you buy, as opposed to getting caught by what it says on the tin, as they say.
