  • This WWII survival film, LAND AND LIVE IN THE JUNGLE (Part 1) dramatizes the survival of the crew of a downed military aircraft in the jungle. The film features Van Heflin as Lieutenant Lynn Harrison. The film was intended to offer practical information for downed fliers, but also to boost the morale of flight crews who might have to make a forced landing in the Pacific campaign.
In the film, four crewman rely on teamwork to make their survival fairly easy - using the jungle's resources to their advantage. On the other hand Captain Harris panics and ends up paying a terrible price. The film includes many helpful hints from how to use a signal mirror, how to create a hammock from your parachute or how to use it as a net to catch fish, and how to deal with native Pacific islanders. There's also discussions about how to avoid large predators and snakes, treating scrapes & wounds to avoid jungle rot, plants and fruits to use and avoid, what fish and animals are safe to eat, etc. The film also shows how to set up a primitive kitchen, the use of Halazone & Atabrine tablets to purify water and fight Malaria, how to set traps and snares to catch small animals and birds, how to deal with and prevent insect bites, how to get rid of leeches, etc. There is also information about how to prepare food in the jungle, how to construct a campsite, build and use a river raft, and more.

For my money this is easily the most entertaining U.S. training film to come out of WW2.

I like 'Land and Live in the Arctic' but as a Canadian I'm more of a sucker for the arctic tundra.

Some of the most valuable items in the jungle are:
    1. Dry set of clothes to get dry at night.
    2. Extra socks for drying feet at night.
    3. Antifungal foot/crotch powder.
    4. Iodine for water purification and first aid.
    5. Tarp and hammock.-can be made from parachute.
    6. Mosquito head net.
If I had those,a machete, a pocket knife, a fire starter and metal canteen I could survive for a long time.....maybe a month or two if I can find enough food. You also need salt.

There are some outdated instructions in these fantastic USN & US Army Air Corps training films from WW2 through the late 70’s. However 99% of the tactics are still recommended today. That’s strong, timeless survival doctrine. An example in this film? Discarding the foam inserts in the survival kit. The foam can extend fire. Pad sprains. Dress wounds. Make fishing bobbers. Secure heavy items like flare pistols & ammo in flotation sacks for river crossings. Mitigate blisters & hot spots. Heck depending on the foam one could even tie flies for fly fishing.

Whether traveling in more obvious adventure conveyance like a kayak or bush plane or less obvious transportation like a car or Greyhound bus, a preparedness minded person will gear up for possibilities outside the false security of the cockpit, boat or automobile.

I learned that cigarettes and amphetamines are important parts of a survival kit.
