It takes about 5 to 6 years for the shoot to harden. Only then can you use it as timber ;) You can also color code them for each new year, that makes it easier to harvest at the right time.
@@WhatPlantisthatPaul how fast do they grow and what size were they when u got them?? thinking of getting bamboo for privacy just wondering what size container i should get..
being that it's a clumping bamboo and sends off multiple shoots from a single seed, how far apart would you suggest planting separate plants to get a good dense natural fence to block road noise?
Hi, about 8-10 feet unless you live in a warm and wet climate, then I would spread them out further. This plant will get huge in 8-10 years in San Diego zone 9b.
Can you cross breed the larger bamboo with the ones that live in low temps to get a large bamboo that can handle colder climates. Also seems like bamboo is the answer to climate change. Just plant these on highway shoulders. Theybwould also safely slow down cars since unlike trees they woiod brake easily when the car hit it. The bamboo shoots would stick under the car slowing it down. With no bamboo the car runs out of controll till it hits somthing tough like a tree and that kills the driver.
I’m a teacher too, I just picked up a steal of a deal. I got a 15 gallon oldhamii and punting pole for 140$. They already have ants in them. Should I try to fight them off or no? I’ve used cornmeal before to get rid of ants and it works okay. I have peppermint plants too I might let those grow in the pot
It depends on the type of ant. I like to use organic neem oil or boric acid traps when the weather is warm. Diatomaceous earth works well too! Good luck.
Georgia MediaGroup Thanks! We’ve been busy with dragon fruit. We will do some more videos on the bamboo! All varieties are loving the first big rain storm of the season!
Paul, I live in San Diego county. I'm interested in planting Asian Lemon bamboo in my yard. Where can I get those in California? Out of state nurseries are not legally allowed to ship to California. Also, which bamboo varieties are not prone to pests? Thanks in advance.
Hi! It sounds like a wonderful variety. Bamboo in San Diego and other parts of the world got hit hard by this... www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/dam/sdc/common_components/images/awm/Docs/ipd_bamboomealybug.pdf I'd recommend checking Facebook groups to learn more :)
I use it to build my dragon fruit trellises and it works well. Some people prefer Japanese Timber Bamboo to build over this one. I'm about to harvest some that are 8-10 years old from this plant.
It is hard to find accurate seeds online. I got mine from a reputable grower that grew it from cutting. If I can find a good seed source, I'll let you know.
Hi! I don't sell plants at this time. I am air layering this plant to propagate it for the first time. Try here? bambooplantsonline.com/products/giant-timber-bamboo-bambusa-oldhamii

The messy stuff is great for mulch!

I want to grow some on our 20 acres land in Mississippi
It would thrive there!
Edible shoots.
Wow you know your bamboo. I'm in Georgia zone 7B which bamboo is it that I would get if I want to have the thick tall bamboo? Thanks, Cathy
Thanks for the kind words. I like a Bambusa oldhamii, but I'm not sure off hand if it can take your winters. I believe it's hardy to the low 20's.
How tall did your giant Tiber bamboo grow to? I live in Los Angeles and want to know how tall before I decide to get a bamboo plant.
Hi!
This is easier to find and will get quite tall in CA. Our tallest one is about 40 feet so far. I don't anticipate it getting much taller.
Dereck S lam all so
Miss your videos man. Where u been

Will this plant grow into my neighbors lawn? Or is it a clumping Bamboo? And how fast does it grow?
It's a clumping bamboo, but will get around 10 feet in diameter.
Hell yeah brother
What is it with everyone pronouncing it old hammy? Oldhamii should not be pronounced that way.
Sorry... You prefer the long I at the end?
@@WhatPlantisthatPaul I don't care, just think it sounds funny when said that way
You cut it too young thats why it breaks

Is this a clump bamboo and can shoots be eaten?
Yes, a clumping bamboo. It's reported online that it is eatable when boiled. I have not tried it yet.
Do you ever sell or trade??
Where can the seeds for this particular bamboo be purchased?
It is hard to find accurate seeds online. I got mine from a reputable grower that grew it from cutting. If I can find a good seed source, I'll let you know.
I need that
It's my favorite bamboo.
Do you eat the shoots
No, because I am forced to treat it with Bayer Tree and shrub every year.
Hello can you send to Norway?
Sorry, I only collect plants, I don't sell them. I hope you find this variety... It's my favorite bamboo.
Dwight, is that you?
Please don't compare me to Dwight Schrute!
Where is this?
I want to get some back to grow in AZ
@@oliviasiewnguyen3870 I live in San Diego, CA. This bamboo thrives here.
