  • Part of "The Shear Zone" video channel. The western Alps are pivotal ground for inspiring understanding the diversity of deformation structures that can develop during mountain building. This is a quick tour of the variety and how the different structures found at outcrop inform understanding of deformation exhumed from different levels in the crust.

Thank you providing a lot of structures from Alps. I did not read many papers here. Please forgive me if my question is not proper. The inertia of lithospheric plates (continent drift) may cause contraction structures, such as the folding and thrusting in the upper crust or a continent obducting to the other in a lithospheric depth. Can I say that this thrusting also cause a higher temperature zone in the top plate (nappes), since deformation in the upper plate is usually stronger than that the below plate? Another extensional system below the Moho maybe also caused by the athenosphere upwelling (such as mantle plume).

Not sure I follow the question. Inertia/momentum doesn't really play a role in tectonics. Although the masses of plates are huge, the accelerations are miniscule. Haven't really gone into thermal structure in thrust belts here... an important topic.
