The cat displayed amazing hunting skills and we forget our house cats have been domesticated for far less time than dogs. Our housecats have a ton in common with wild panthers, tigers and lions in terms of demeanor and hunting skills.

Having watched the same scene in my own garden with my Tom cat ,that looked exactly like the one in the video, the result didnt surprise me, the biggest laugh was always the " i didnt really care" nonchalant walk off after he failed .
The cat's greater top speed was nullified by the squirrel's superior ability to accelerate in a new direction, each time inching closer to the tree in the process. It used superior tactics (changing direction) in the service of a winning strategy (getting up the tree). Note the squirrel climbed up the tree from the opposite side so the cat would lose sight and could not lunge. If I was that squirrel I doubt I would have been so clever and cool under pressure.
Those squirrels can have good tactics. I just came from a video where a squirrel tires out a rattlesnake by goading it into striking (then missing) many times then finally starts attacking the snake after it had gassed (reptiles gas way earlier than mammals). Brilliant game plan :)
PEIKKO: Heh heh, I'll sneak up on him and then POUNCE! CORKY: I'm gonna let him get pretty close just to make it sporting, but he's the Coyote and I'm the Roadrunner. We all know how this is going to turn out.

+MadeAUsername No the cats mistake was too hesitant and too slow at the moment of attack, it could catch the squirrel at the first moment. Absolutely lack of skill of hunt. If you see how Leoparde attack you would know what i mean
@Ehsan Ag: Not correct. The cat did everything right from his understanding, but so did the squirrel. Upon attacking the cat made an assumption that the squirrel would do the tactically correct thing, which would be to get off of the direct line of attack. So, the cat waited for a turn left or a turn right. But because the squirrel, instead chose to run the opposite direction for a couple of steps, which tactically is the wrong thing to do. Think passing the baton at the Olympics. The guy who starts accelerating always gets run down by the person who already has the speed. But in the case that you can't go left or right and let the cat fly by, you have to do what you have to do. By the squirrel choosing that direction, it forced the cat to relinquish his position of waiting for a left or right move and forced him to advance forward more. This is what the squirrel wanted because by making the cat move straight is what opened up the left and right side. Then, the squirrel simply backed the cat away with a zigzag motion to open up a lane to the tree. The squirrel actually turns the corner on the right side and could have made a break for it, but it wanted the tree instead. It happens in basketball all the time, that's why you have to always know where the basket is behind you when you're guarding someone. Otherwise they can do the same thing and get an easy layup. The difference between what big cats hunt, like leopards and little cats hunt is agility. That means a quicker harder prey to catch from the initial moment. The leopards prey can't accelerate or turn like a squirrel so leopards can just go in and get the kill. Squirrels are too fast for that, you need to get them into the open and use you speed to catch them. Only the squirrel refused to make a long straight away sprint, it instead chose the zigzag and escaped. Both did a great job, but squirrels practice chasing each other all day, so the cat needs more experience in guarding the tree, anticipating where the squirrel wants to go so he can block it and forcing the long run so he can run him down.
I don't think it's fat, just longhaired. Longhaired cats tend to look fatter than they actually are. I have a longhaired cat and people call him chubby even though he's actually very skinny.

Squirrels clock in at only 20 MPH, but their acceleration from a stop is about 5 times faster than a cat, so they can basically stop and get up to full speed so much quicker, which makes them extremely hard to catch. The only time a cat catches a squirrel is when the squirrel messes up a turn and runs RIGHT into the cat which was actually behind on acceleration. On other words, cats don't catch squirrels, squirrels run into cats during a chase. I love the way that Peikko just stopped trying to catch the squirrel when it got into the tree. He didn't even try to climb the tree after it. It was like he said, "Oh, well. He got away. Let's see what's over here." LOL.
I have a friend who owned a very fat cat. That cat was technically a house cat, but was still able to catch rabbits, wild birds... pretty much anything. It was amazing to watch it in action. My first time watching him hunt I was thinking, "there is no way all that fat could move quick enough to catch a leaf blowing in the wind". Boy, was i wrong, as fast as lightning, the cat had a bird, which it immediately brought it home and let it loose in their home. LOL!!!
Brian Yach Yeah, cats like to "teach" their owners how to catch food so they bring whatever they've caught to show how it's done.. that's what they would do for their kittens.By the way, it's a little amusing for me that some folks think that Peikko the cat in this video is fat...LOL. It's one of the smallest adult cats that I've seen...:) Her sister weighs 1.5 times more, for example. But she don't mind, she got famous for that squirrel hunt! :)
What a nice looking cat! and he almost had that squirrel! In slow motion cats use their tail to balance and change directions quickly...like cheetahs on the Serengeti.
That's true.. I once had to save Peikko in the middle of the night, she was high up in a tree.. my ladder was almost not enough. I don't know why she was there but sure was scared to come down by herself.
The cat isn't fat, he's just fluffy AF! My cat looks exactly the same, literally they could be twins. She's got this magnificent floofy double-coat, but as soon as she's drenched in the rain she looks like a skinny little rat!
Exactly, that's true. It's one the smallest cats I've seen in Finland. I've got some funny footage of Peikko taking a bath.. she really looks like a long black rat when wet..LOL
That's a Smart Squirrel, it knew it was caught out in the open...lure the cat Away from the trees " the squirrels only saftey " and outrun the Cat to the tree !! Brilliant !! Oh and that Cat has Nothing to be ashamed of, it clearly gave it's all in the chase :) Peace

phyroxin thanks for the obvious but accurate summation
EXACTLY.
Yeah, what he said
I liked that explanation
Peikko needs to realize that he can climb trees too.
The squirrel did not detect the cat until quite late. If the cat had sneaked in a bit closer, it might have succeeded.
I think the squirrel was quite aware of the big black and white thing in his peripheral view. LOL
@@bruhdamartinasty3636 But did the squirrel detect the thing getting closer? I don't think so, if the cat was only perceived by only one of the squirrel's eyes. Fluffy kitty FTW!
The sign of a great vlogger ... kept quiet and let what was going on in the video do all the talking
That was like a wide receiver and a corner back 😂😂😂
Squirrels Juke game is serious.lol
09BUZZSAW I swear lol
Title should read: Squirrel Breaks Cat's Ankles
Haha..😁 I've got some great suggestions here in the comment section
john herring maybe if the cat wasnt so overfed, it couldve caught it
@john herring the squirrel gained ground on the cat and had it moving side to side in a backwards motion 🥴 watch the video again, that cat got disrespected
cat to spectators: he just lucky, imagine if there are no trees
I love the way that Peikko just stopped trying to catch the squirrel when it got into the tree. He didn't even try to climb the tree after it. It was like he said, "Oh, well. He got away. Let's see what's over here." LOL.
The cat's speed and agility are amazing!
actually, it isn't... too much weight, also not very interested... squirrel was way too fast for this one
The Squirrel is thinking,
Ninja pls you ain't fast enough. ✌️
Man, that was impressive how the cat was trying to keep the squirrel from reaching the tree.
The suspense this 8 year video has is unreal..
cheers for the camera guy
What a nice looking cat! and he almost had that squirrel! In slow motion cats use their tail to balance and change directions quickly...like cheetahs on the Serengeti.
The Cat: Me
The Squirrl: My Hope and Dreams.
Video: My Life in a nutshell.
Haha..😂 Keep chasing, you'll catch them eventually ☺
Scared the shit of that little guy, that’s for sure lol I love how cool cats play it off, when they’ve lost..
Cat should have climbed the tree lol
Lucy O'Neil that’s what they do when chased by dogs💀😂
That's true.. I once had to save Peikko in the middle of the night, she was high up in a tree.. my ladder was almost not enough. I don't know why she was there but sure was scared to come down by herself.
That backyard looks so peaceful
Cat played press man... should have played zone😅😅😅😅😅
Need more defenders for this squirrel 😀
Good work out for the kitty. Now he has something to dream about when he takes his cat nap ...
That sqirral will make a good rugby player.
Warren Moses motorcycles for life
Juke!
2020 version of this same chase:
"Cat Chases Squirrel - EPIC Zigzag Escape"
ua-cam.com/video/bU-3U_ZgCvc/v-deo.html
Less waiting + more action + extra bonus chase!
I believe it's called an "Angora Tuxedo Cat" due to the fur's length and coloring...
My cat looks just like that cat except he's a shorthair and yeah he's kinda chubby too.
But the thing is, even fluffysness makes it harder for a cat to chase
nah that cat fat
The cat was so patient, wow. I just love to watch cats stalking their prey---mainly if the prey gets away though :D
Yea! That's why they're such a successful species. Well, that and being adorable.
Then the cat dies.
so you want meat eaters to starve, im guessing your vegan too?
That squirrel did some mathematics manevours there
that was the most intense Mexican standoff I ever saw, then I expected the Benny hill theme song to start playing lol
Arthur ok cat's are quite capable of climbing trees
PeePeeEee true my Friend, but have you ever watched to squirrels chase each other ?? NO cat on this Beautiful green Earth can keep up to a squirrel in a tree !! Not possible my Friend, Peace
Arthur ok I actually chase after Squirrels in my yard. It's really fun.
"Cat has nothing to be ashamed of"
I have never met a cat that was capable of feeling shame.
Mr. B Thank you for your comment Friend, it gives me another opportunity to watch this Cool video ! Peace
We all laugh at how cute it is but the fact is that squirrel was a few inches from being torn to pieces lol
Cats & Squirrels are equally super fast 💨 , great reflexes.
This cat is super cute.
Ausgetrickst!👍
Gibt dann eben wieder Whiskas!
😂😂😂
interesting to see:
1) how squirrel is basically running to where the cat started
2) how fast cat understood that the game was over
The cat was between the squirrel and the tree the whole time... Perfect example of the term "out played"
Marek Soans yeah the cat instantly left the scene after defeat.
But the cat knows it will have another chance.
Lol that's an awesome cat. Super fast reflexes and how he went from "IMMA KILL YOU!!!" to "I'm good." in .1 seconds.
they probably delirious from incessant noise
Wow I haven't laughed that hard on UA-cam in awhile. Very nice upload😆👍
Thank you Alicia :)
Thanks to everybody for watching! ☺😍 I finally have a new video out.
ua-cam.com/video/Z8j831lM1CU/v-deo.html
My cats, Peto and Peikko, inspect the roof of the house.. cat style of course! Check all the falls and fails 😁
That cat's speed is AMAZING
Well, the cat got his exercise for the day - haha!
It's like Tom and Jerry, except with a squirrel rather than a mouse. On a side note, that is one fat cat lol
Jerry
Daniel Sadjadian No, She's Long haired.
Wait Gerry.
Daniel Sadjadian
We have one kind of like that. Everyone thinks he's fat, but he is just REALLY fluffy!
Excuses - excuses ....
