  • Box calls are a great options for beginner turkey callers. They're easy to use and more versatile than most people think. Jeff Propst has been turkey hunting for over 40 years, and one of his favorite calls to use is still a box call. In this video, he discusses different kinds of box calls, and the different kinds of turkey sounds you can make on them. Whether you are new to turkey calling/hunting, or been in the woods for years, consider learning how to use a box call to add one more weapon in your arsenal this spring!

    4:10 I'm not an expert, but I have never heard that the season has much if anything to do with cackle vs. no cackle. The vast majority of hens don't cackle when they fly down and if they do it's very subtle, regardless of the season. In fact, I think I hear it more in the fall and winter when birds are flocked up than I do in the spring. Denny Gulvas talks a ton about the cackle and why birds do vs. don't cackle. A lot more gobblers do fly down cackles than most people realize, too.

    I learned something from you today. I'm new to turkey hunting and bought a CD on mouth calls that came with the pack of them. The two "pros" on the CD claimed that the heb makes the "Kee Kee" sound to assemble their poults after getting separated. Listened to it several more times to make sure what they said.
    Me, not knowing any better, assumed they were correct. Adter hearing you I looked for additional secondary sources.
    You are right. They are wrong. Hens yelp to assemble poults.
    Thanks for helping me learn something.

    Thank you soo much for your video!! I’m learning how to use box calls, slates or striker and mouth and I was wondering when do you put down the call and pick up your weapon of choice? Mine is bow. My ambition is to get my Turkey Grandslam with my bow. I feel it’s more challenging and I’m a staunch bowhunter. You answered many questions I had in this video. The problem is simple, regardless of the call you want to use you need to practice A LOT! Its not rocket science, I would walk around everywhere and practice and annoy the family, in the truck or wherever!

    • @Whitetail_Properties

      Turkey flock up and tend to use different vocalizations then they do in the spring. But your basic yelp is something that hen turkeys will do all year.

    I have a box call and it is raw with no staining or finish at all. I was wondering if staining it would effect the performance of it. Any advice on giving it a stain finish or just leave it alone? Thanks for a reply.

    • @Whitetail_Properties
      @Whitetail_Properties  2 роки тому

      If the call was manufactured without a stain we would have to assume that staining it could change the sound/pitch to some degree, how much would be hard to say. We don't think it would necessarily make the call un-operable though, many manufactures stain their wooden box calls.
