What you see is what you get, and audiences typically fall in with a streamer they can relate to that's also true to themselves 3: Staff - This wasn't always the case, but it seems like staff is pretty confident with everything business-oriented, having done this for two going on three years

It certainly does help when a company does its own thing instead of just trying to emulate what previously established successful companies are doing, the former nets you success and the latter dooms you to failure, not just in the Vtuber space but in business in general.
Something I've noticed is the western market disires fewer idols to be put on pedestals and just wants more relatable personalities. That includes management and leadership. Hence, "Yagoo is best girl" and "Fishman hate".
What Phase does right is understand that Hololive isn’t the template for the West. People don’t want idols here, we want cute anime girls acting like normal people/streamers
yeah, I agree. Even in the spanish speaking sphere, we like idols but we see it as an 'act'. It's cute, wholesome, etc, but we still expect the person behind it to have their won personal life outside of her 'act'. Ffs, we have altars for our oshi, praying that they find love and get married!
When I fell into the rabbit hole over a year ago, I had my reservations about the English side of things because it was too apparent that some were putting up an act to protect the company's image and were being held back by it, were trying way too hard to be edgy, or just used Vtubing as a platform for their annoying activism. As much as I enjoy Hololive, Phase has really been growing on me lately. It feels like the girls have their own (sometimes twisted) idea of what's seiso and try to maintain it, but whenever they break free of it, it has that "everything just went wrong" feel and it's more hilarious than anything. And even though Pippa gets unhinged, you know that's just who she is and she's got her wholesome moments, too. I think what's great about all of them is that their content feels like their own and not mandated by corpo, and you can tell they love what they're doing. They're not afraid to speak their minds but don't overdo it either, and if they do it's usually by accident because some of them never go outside. 😅
I can definitely relate, I'll be honest it took me a long time to give Phase a chance because I was so turned off by other EN VTubers I'd seen. I think one of the most impressive things about Phase is that the girls have been able to carve out their own niches, while still maintaining that feeling of "Phase unity." The benefits of a corpo, but without a lot of the baggage that many others come along with.

I don't think fishman understands the Western market. He wanted 100% seiso, sane idols in an extremely corporate company. Yet he got unseiso, mentally unstable streamers in one of the companies that feels the least corpo of them all. (Except for too many meetings, but fans don't see that) This is exactly what the Western market wants, but it's not due to fishman's understanding of the market, but mostly due to fishman being bad at getting what he wants.
As a businessman, of course fishman wants seiso idols that cause 0 trouble and respect him tremendously. These are not brand risks, they're safe assets that will never suddenly crater. As a businessman, Sakana is extraordinarily lucky to have no seiso idols. Phase would be a 7CCV corp at most. And for God's sakes, he picked the streamers, he knew what he was getting into :p
Pippa and Shiina both were talents that fishman was advised against hiring, and yet he did it anyway. He might not know exactly what the western market wants, but he does seem to let his talents find out.
I still think it's hilarious that he really wanted a Marine for his company and was hoping Airi would fit the role, and as we all know he ended up with his Miko instead (not a dig, Miko's wonderful, just really PON). Even though he found her annoying, he still hired her knowing people would love her. He hates her tangents, bluntness and game choices and yet that's what her fans love about her.

I think Phase Connect has massively benefitted from the decline of both Nijisanji and Hololive.
