I remember John The Cop. I officially only met him face to face once. I had a friend who went to his Karate school. And he always hung out in my Junior High School. Dewey, JHS 136. One time three kids jumped me at school and my Mom went down. I was taken out of my class and brought to the Dean's office and there was The Dean, My Mom, and John the cop. There he was with his shoes off, but had such a presence. He sent me out into the street with two big ass guys to look for the Punk who, him and his two friends beat me up. I was 12 then, but 52 now, but I do believe if we found that Guy, John would have done something to him. And he told my Mom I could go to his school for nothing. I never did go but thought that was so nice of him. Thanks John! P.S. - Would love to know how John is doing now.

My husband was from sunset park when he was a kid - born and raised. He told me how John, back in the late 70"s had offered him an opportunity to get free karate lessons just to get him off the streets. My husband was not a bad guy, but he was young, lived with his mother on 44th St btw 5th and 6th, right across the street from the park and he was influenced by his environment. The gangs were in full effect and had their influence on the youth - my husband was no exception. My husband would visit the karate school on the ave because he admired the arts, and to this day so much appreciated what John offered. Although my husband, Angel (for those who know him) did not join the school, he was so impacted by John's influence and genuine care for the youth that he, my husband never did join the gangs, and today despite his upbringing (not so good) is a successful man in his own right. THANK YOU JOHN. I do not know John, but because of the stories that my husband has told me about John and the neighborhood - I would love to see a movie. #JOHNTHE COP-SUNSETPARKMOVIE

Back then my nickname was Kool, I remember all the gangs, especially the Turban Saints they hanged out where I lived 43rd and 8th. I had many friends that attended the Dojo and they all praised John the Cop.

As a teenager in Sunset Park in the early 70s, I recall the Brooklyn Brothers, the Turbans, the Saints (my recollection is that the Turbans and Saints eventually merged), the Czars, and the MC club, the 69ers. There were other groups that did not wear colors --- groups in Sunset Park (44th & 6th), 42nd and 5th, 45th and 4th, and 47th and 5th. I do recall hearing, at some point, that John the Cop, who I do not recall meeting, had a karate school on 46th St and that he cared about the guys in the neighborhood. I remember thinking back then, John the Cop, old school -- good. The short film is a testament to one man's life in service to others -- making his piece of the world a better place. Well done.

I grew up in Sunset Park and John was always walking the neighborhood and he would talk to me and my friends when we hung out in sunset park and give us good advice and guidance. We were always invited to his Dojo and some did take him up on that offer and those who did became great fighters. I remember the shooting and the kid that died. Miguel from La Familia always protected me.

Always talked with John, he'd stop when he passed my store(Music Center, 48th & 5th). He was full of himself, but he did care and did a lot of good in the neighborhood. Saw a guy challenge him once in the park, John was cool enough to not beat the guy senseless. That takes control.

John the Cop was there for the community I grew up and was raised in Sunset was there when Familia, Assassinators, Turban Saints, 69ers, FMD's and all the rest was around he always treated everyone with respect first and was only an asshole when your hand called for it. He would take some of the kids to his Dojo and let them learn for free or give them discounts if they couldn't continue to pay I could name a few of the one that where in that video. There is a website that you can post in and they fund your project with donations. Look into it and I would help promote it and would even donate myself. Now in Florida but still love Sunset still have family there. 51st one.

Damn!!!! I remember John The Cop from my years at Dewey ( 74-76) That fucker used to harass me every time he saw me hanging out. Then again, I was in the wrong for the shit I use to do as a kid. Now as an adult, I gotta say, much respect to him. He was an ass, but if you gave him respect, you got it in return.
