King Klast, Classic NY Street Gang Historian | BK Stories

  • While the Bronx burned, Brooklyn saw its own influx of inner city woes that led to the proliferation of street gangs, crimes and chaos. Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park was nicknamed Little Vietnam by those that lived in the neighborhood. Since the late 90’s, King Klast has maintained an online destination that documents this history in the form of www.classicnyst.... In 2010 he became a member of The Assassinators (who are now a community organization) and took part in consulting for the documentary Rubble Kings.
In this edition of BK Stories, he discusses the various crews that ran Sunset during the 70’s and 80’s, and shares his first-hand experience with the violence that persisted at the time.

I was a food salesman to a bodega on 4th Ave and i believe 53 St 1978 - 82. The owner was a hardworking man with a young daughter he was stabbed then shot in a robbery. Allegedly members of the local gang were responsible. The next owner was a young man in his twenties he carried a 357 magnum under his apron. He was confident he could handle the bad guys unfortunately was killed with that gun only a few weeks after buying that store. Very sad, it's a very different area today.

You see them marching together on 5th whenever there is a protest. Sad thing is those same yuppies and hipsters marching with them are the reason why they protest about rent. The landlords want cash no section 8 or any help and the rent be too high. So if the mexicans would be smarter and open their eyes and stop allowing these yuppies to take over we wouldnt be in the situation were in. Sunset been gentrified for madd long ago. Back then in like the 80s and 90s sunset was hood but now it’s not really that hood anymore but there still gang members tho. But yeah it’s cuz of gentrification and the crime rate got low too. Me and my dad both grew up in sunset and my dad grew up in it in the 80s and 90s and he said it was way worst back then. Now sunset is like kind of a nice neighborhood in Brooklyn now but still crazy shit happens once a while but it ain’t that hood anymore and now madd rich people moved in too. So gentrification happened in sunset madd long ago tho maybe like 10 years ago or some shit. But yeah it’s a good neighborhood now tho.

During the early 1970' s there was no such thing as The Assassinators, they came much later. In sunset Park the gangs I can recall were the Turbans from the Bronx, which branched out to Sunset Park.Turbans Part ll and Young Turbans. They were other gangs such as the bklyn bros, bklyn saints, Rican Saints, together bros, The Maceteros, The Leopards etc.Although st gangs were fadeing in the mid 70's they mushroomed again in the late 70's & 80's with other gangs such as La Familia and The Dirty Ones.By this time Sunset Park became increasingly violent and dangerous.
