This series is by far the most detailed instruction vid on rebuilding a 231J. I will be using this vid soon. Thank you for uploading this. Gives us weekend wrenchers a chance.

Thanks for the video. It helped me rebuilding mine.. I did have problems though. Nowhere in my instructions or in your video did it mention some models had to have the shaft for the shift cut down when installing a SYE. Well mine did.. it would hit just enough to not allow it to raise and shift.. had that damn thing apart 4 times, and in and out of the vehicle twice... in the end I did prevail. Thanks for the video.

For the bearings that fit into a hole if you put the bearing in the freezer to shrink it a few thousands and the case in the oven at two hundred degrees it will expand the hole a few thousands and the bearings will go in even easer. That's what we did in the Navy, because we didn't have all the fancy tools to work with.

All said and done (and I know you were doing some upgrades) that TC was in pretty damn good shape...I hope the junk yard one we just installed.(w/o a rebuild) is that nice inside!
    Thanks for the great videos!!

Pretty sure I would have hot tanked the case to make it look clean.

Two things... one I noticed that you didn't silicone around the case bolt holes. Is that advisable ? I was always told that it was. Second, should your mode range be in 4 Low during reassembly ? It really wasn't mentioned or could I notice what position the mode selection was in because it was basically on to the next step... I'm doing a Rugged Ridge SYE now and was also wondering if the mode shift fork rod actually had to be cut down to 9 3/8" ? Thanks in advance for any responses.

2nd request, when i did my teraflex sye kit and split the transfer case i believe the top shift fork was in the highest spot on the shift gear itself so when i went to reasemble i had a hard time geting the fork rod to lign up with the bottom and top fork, the bottom one once i put the shifting gear in the nuetral position sat flush in the splines as opposed to when it was in gear on the highest spot when i first split cases ,so i just put it in the same position you did in like that gully or saddle position or nuetral and it when back fine, will it make a diffrence ??? or will i have to move the shifter on the outside of the case to match the nuetral position on inside ???. thank you.

Great video Son! It's neat to see the new shaft has a replaceable speedo drive gear. Do they offer different ratios to accommodate different tire sizes/gearing? or is it done through the ECM program? Also, I bet it was fun getting that 105 ft lbs on that yoke nut. Did you have to fabricate some sort of holding fixture?

I don't think they do as you are correct, the wheel speed is all calculated through the ECM. It was a bit interesting, we just used a pry bar via the other yoke. Though it would have been a fair bit easier to install the case on the vehicle put the trans in gear with the transfer case in 4Lo then torque it down.

Where did you get the documentation for it? I'd like to have that on-hand for the NP231, AX15 and 2000 4.0L engine.

The rebuild kit did not come with it and I am afraid if i tug on it hard it will break
    Thanks for the video

does it matter what gear its in when you reasemble, i am doing mine now and i am not sure what gear its but i thought abought puting it in the same position you have it in just to be safe.

Also did you buy all you seal and bearing tools? Im having hard time just finding blind puller and i just dont have all the money to buy all kits. Can you tell me what all you had to buy or rented? i know its askin alot but any answer about any of this would be a big help.Great job.You will go far!!!!

On that front output shaft bearing can you use a bearing with the slot on a case that originally had a smooth bearing if all else is equal? Mine had a smooth bearing and the kit I got has two with the slot. I think they had intended to send one with and one without. I can't see it causing a problem.

i have a question pls.I removed chain and shaft assembly.Im puttin sye in along with rebuild except pump, and new chain. They appear to be new recently.I was told it was replaced.Well i may have gottren the chain turned around but im not sure. Will it even matter.Gears all look good and chain also.I noticed chain has a black link in it and as im assemblying ,.The black link is facing towards front of t-case which i just felt was maybe wrong or maybe that is how it was before. So do you think it would matter?I will put gears and chain and all into slots and try rolling it around with little pressure on it and see if it acts grabby.i guess.Any info would be so appreciated.,You have made 2 great videos by the way i have wore them out.Sincerely Rob

I hate silicone. Don't they make gaskets for between the cases and the tail shaft housing? Also, isn't there a brass gear synchro? Very informational. Thanks
