  • In Stockholm, there's a diagonal wind tunnel, used for one very specific purpose: learning to fly a wingsuit. I tried. I almost managed it.

    For anyone wondering, like I was, what the air intakes on the wingsuit are for; "The force of the opposing air inflates these membranes by pushing air through inlets in the suit, helping to keep the airfoil semirigid through flight. This means that the flyer doesn't have to maintain the shape of the wings through sheer physical force alone, but also doesn't suffer limited mobility due to a rigid wing structure."

      As a skydiver who's never been in the wingsuit wind tunnel, but only the regular vertical wind tunnels, this effect still applies just the same.
      Wind tunnels give you sooo much condensed and precise experience in a short amount of time. In this sport, more skills means more potential for fun.

    Instincts can be quite in the way when trying to master a new element. Got myself a good bath that day.

    • @kaing5074
      @kaing5074 4 роки тому +1

      With canoeing the learning curve is steep and only gets harder over time. As you seek to heighten your skill level the basics become more and more important to the extent that one understand why the Hungariand and Germand train from the ages of 5 and onwards. Muscle memory and basic core strength as well as other exercises picked up over the years contribute to confidence and genuine performance in the boat that most don't realise. The skill difference from a young age really determines the longevity of the athelete, although casual paddlers need not reach that level to enjoy the sport. Cheers:)

    Well done Tom. I tried learning to skydive a few years back and had some tunnel time in a freefall tunnel, it is sooo hard with such a tiny space, I found the real thing a lot easier, but with only 45 seconds of freefall per jump it was hard to progress, but in the tunnel could do 15min comparatively cheaply. Very tiring, but great for building confidence up. It'd be awesome if you were able to have a go at actual freefall, you'd love it! :D

    The really amazing thing is as they mentioned that you can collect so many more hours flying and also in such a great controlled environment. You can judge your performance afterwards and also you do not have to be afraid of the height. I would love to try it once I am done studying.
