Ray, Thanks Brother. Got a new to me 1998 Honda Foreman 450 es. Same issue. Heading to the shop to repeat your excellent test. Again thanks brother!
Glad to help and best of luck!
Seems to be a lot easier than i originally thought it would be
Trust your volt meter. Good luck
What volt meter are you using@@RayofallTrades
@@mt_shoots8918 I like the Fluke series of meters
Very well done. Thanks
Thank you so much!!
Have charging issues with my 2010 Honda 420 only charges for first 5 minutes or a about a mile then voltage drops to 12volts and keeps dropping til bike is cooled off then it will charge to above 13 volts and keeps repeating this cycle. Enjoyed your video and would appreciate your thoughts before I spend time and money on new stator.
Check the voltage output of the stator into the regulator when it fails. See if the regulator is getting the correct supply
I have changed voltage regulator. Would I check yellow wires for voltage after machine is hot with it running? Would take it to a shop but it’s out on my trapline and have to bring it to town in my boat a real pain. Machine has 950 hrs on mostly in 1 and 2 gear has treated me well until this issue. I have a voltage gauge installed on handlebars that indicates when the bike quits charging the battery. Thanks for your help
Yes. If I remember correctly, you will have about 24 volts AC coming from the 2 yellow wires when it's running. Check this while its working. Then compare to results when it fails. You are trying to determine if the new regulator is faulty or if the stator is failing when hot. But i would definitely suspect connections that are corroded, getting hot, and then making a poor connection.
Thanks again when I head back upriver to cabin I’ll check it out connections all looked good but you never know
@@philipjean1086good luck!
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
So what are the possibilities if the red wire running to the regulator/rectifier has no voltage going to it? All fuses checked out with a cursory continuity test.
Check for a broken wire on the ignition switch or broken ignition switch
Turns out my helper didn’t check the main fuse… “Mystery” solved.
@@dadutchboyproductions623 excellent!!
Hello. At approximately 1 minute 26 seconds into the video, you can hear the quad studder just for a second. My honda forman is doing that too! What the heck is it? Any help is appreciated.
I’m not sure but I always suspected it to either be a intake/exhaust valve that didn’t seal /floated for a second or a missed spark
@@RayofallTrades thanks!
@@jayt131no problem and good luck
Hey man, i don’t know if you still check comments but I would appreciate it a lot if you could get back to me! I have a 2005 foreman 500 and it has been idling rough. The battery is out in it so I’ve been having to pull to start it. Like I said it Idles real real rough and will even shut off especially when I give it gas, but as soon as I the lights on it runs idles way better? Any clue ?
See other post. I'd start with adding a battery
If the battery drains itself being stationary is that a good indicator that the stator is burned out?
Not necessarily. Use a test light or Ammeter to check for current draw and unplug the stator. See if that is your draw. I have a deere video describing that method if you need:

@@RayofallTrades thanks for getting back to me. I went ahead and ordered a rectifier without checking for resistance as it wasnt too expensive. I think the battery just died after running so much spark. I'm going to put it in in a couple days 🤞
@@ZulkSOD sometimes you can return electronic parts if you don't install them. So if it's not bad you might be able to return. Either way, good luck and hope it fixes it!
What if it has power without the key on. My problem is my rectifier burnt up so I got a cheap one now when I touch the terminal to the battery it sparks and if you put it on and wait a little with key off might I add, the rectifier heats up like it has power. I check with key off red and green wire have power 12.7v
Try to find a schematic for your make and model. It sounds like the key switch is supplying hot when it should not be. Can you attach a schematic?
@@RayofallTrades I guess it’s supposed to have power constantly I think the rectifier was just bad, I got it super cheap for like $8 so it’s expected. But I’ll try to find one.
My stator is reading 0 ohms on all 3 yellow wires… does that mean the stator is junk
Probably not. Depends on the meter. 0.2 to 0.7 ohms is the range for this one. If the meter is not very sensitive, it may read 0
Hey man are u still here i have a question
Sure. I’ll try to answer
What is the little knock it does at 9:00 ? Mine does the same thing
Also , mine will fire up and run fine when I use jumper cables from my other bike , but as soon as I disconnect them it dies immediately. What do you recon that is ?
That's a miss fire. Might need valve adjustment. But change spark plug with known good first. Sometimes it's just that
