Great breakdown! Honestly super impressed by the little differences, at least on mobile! 16mm would be the move for someone starting out for sure. 15-35 is what I invested in since I can use it for a variety of work, not just RE. Great video man!
I started my RE photography with the rf16mm. Overall a good lens. I still use it for video because of the weight on my gimbal. I shoot manually to avoid sudden shifts with autofocus. For photos I now have the rf 14-35 F/4. A lot sharper than the 16 and a lot less chromatic aberration. That is the only drawback of the rf 16.
@@TaylorBrownPhotoVideo the 14-35 has some barrel distortion as you get close to the edge of the frame, but this is easily corrected in LR. And I love the stabilization. Sharp up to 1/2 second handheld! Coming from the analog days this is shear magic to me.
I was thinking about getting the rf 16 specifically to have a lighter gimbal setup on my rs3 pro - you think it's a noticeable stability improvement withe the lighter lens?
Ive been using the Sigma 14-24mm HSM as my real estate photography lens of choice. Unmatched in optical performance. But the thing is a monster, even makes the 16-35mm feel light in comparison, unusable on my gimbal. The 16mm STM was my saving grace. Could actually afford it, weighs so little and has allowed me to take some superb videos. Maybe not as great as they could be on a better lens but I have yet to meet a client that can actually tell the difference. It is surprisingly generous of Canon to have this lens. Considering how much of an extortion most of the RF lineup is.
I've been using my Canon 17-40mm for real estate video, now i am considering this 16mm since it is light weight and affordable. I am pretty sure my clinets can't tell the difference lol
Probably not! Might be worth a try if you think it makes sense for you. I mostly use mine for Vlog / BTS shots since it’s so tiny and I still like to use my Canon L lenses for zoom + the quality.
I use the 14-35 RF and totally recommend it. I use 35mm for detail shots without needing to change lenses and re-balance the gimbal. Bit expensive but totally worth it.
It is if your camera can do good low light performance with low noise at high ISO’s (like Sony a7siii) otherwise it can be tough to only have f4 in low light interiors
@@aemateus most of the time. I have a 50mm f1. 8 if I need it. But remember that the wider the aperture the less sharp the image. If I could shoot wides at F8 I would.
Hey! Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Just checked mine and it worked totally normal for bracketing exposures. Maybe it had issues when it was new or something like that before camera firmware updates?
Question: right now been doing real estate pictures for a few years now. I'm currently running the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM on my canon eos r. Would the rf 16mm lens be a upgrade in quality? I am shooting air bnb's and high end homes and commercial properties.
I doubt it since you lose the zoom, but it might be sharper. I would look for a used Canon EF 16-35 f4 instead if you can find one - that would be an upgrade for sure.
Still not sure there would really be a reason to get the newer one since it’s likely not significantly different than what you have. I’d still recommend the 16-35 EF f4 since it has less distortion than the RF 16 so your overall image quality is going to end up being better.
hi, how did you remove the distortion in the videos with the 16mm rf? Is it enough to activate the automatic camera corrections? I have the Laowa 15mm 0D lens and I would like to take the Canon to have auto focus, but in videos I don't know how to remove the distortion. Thanks
Hey! Yes - I just had in-camera profile corrections turned on. Laowa is a better lens optically but for the price this one is pretty solid. Bonus that it's super light for travel or on a gimbal. All that being said I still just use the zoom for any pro work I do & just use the tiny one for travel / hiking/ bts or vlog stuff for the channel.
@@TaylorBrownPhotoVideoThanks, yes the Laowa is certainly better, but the Canon (with in-camera correction) is certainly faster and more practical to use. I thought it was impossible to eliminate the distortion before seeing this video.

Those are great lenses! For normal interior photos there’s not a huge difference though unless you’re needing to shoot at 2.8 for creative shots, or for video. Good call to save your money for now :)
Great video! Just a small note: when you talk about length of the lenses, related to using them in angles/tight spaces, i think that the length of the lens itself doesn't affect the use in small places, because the angle of view projected by a 16mm lens is seen on the film/sensor plane, and doesn't depend from where is the front glass of the lens, so i think no matter if the lens is 5cm or 20 long, the field of view would be exactly the same, if the camera doesn't move and the lenses are of the same focal length even with different body length 🙂 but maybe i'm wrong?
Hey! I thought it was weird too. Not sure on the science but all of the photo tests were on a tripod changing lenses without moving the camera and the RF 16mm photos were shifted backward a bit. Maybe its because it's RF mount / Adapter situation? Or maybe the RF is actually a tiny bit wider. Let me know if you find out :) -TB
@@TaylorBrownPhotoVideo well, the RF 16 is very well known to be a real 13/14mm, which then Canon corrects digitally in camera (vignette, distortion) cropping the sides so the lens looks good in jpeg and video; if you shot in raw, and use a lens profile in Lightroom/C1/DXO, the crop should look more like a 15mm. The advertised 16mm are shown only with hefty cuts in camera, so only in video and jpeg. Raw FOV is much wider then 16mm, you can check any review like Opticallimits, or here on YT video from Chris Frost or Dustin Abbot (the latter show this behaviour perfectly in his review) to see how the focal length changes on the RF 16.
