  • sailboat boatyard stories: cutlass bearing, rust and more
    welcome back to the second part of our boat yard adventure. this time our sailboat ForTuna will get a anti-rust treatment, to make sure she will be sailing for many years to come. we also discover a huge problem on our cutlass bearing and have to change it to keep our sailboat afloat once she will be in the water. changing the cutlass bearing is no easy task but we show you how to change the cutlass baring and also how to change the shaft seal.

    With that expensive gland on the inboard part of the shaft, you have to squeeze it each time For Tuna returns to the water - to eliminate the air that would damage it?
    Also good thinking about the red bottom as it will hide any more rust

    • @WhenSailing
      @WhenSailing  2 роки тому

      yeess😅 squeezed out all the air and now it does not even drip😆 before we had some slight water drops☺️ hehe hope the rust stays away for some time😅 thanks for watching ian💪🏻⛵️

    Do you guys remember the cutlass bearing outside diameter? I need to change mine and we have the same boat.

    Thanks for this video! This is very helpful. I saw you on the street in Marigot a couple of days ago, and I'm actually looking to pull my Beneteau Oceanis 40 at the same boat yard for painting the bottom. My boat has a rubber cutlass bearing and I'm hoping that I can replace it easily by just removing the prop. I am contemplating replacing the shaft seal as well, which I already purchased.

      Hi Randy🙏 next time you have to say helloo😛 we are in st barths currently but be back soon in marigot😉 runbber should work easier and in ilet marine you even find the full rubber black one with the lip, would go for that one next time💪🏻

    enjoyed the video as usual. I was hoping you would show a picture of the piece you cut from the hull, how thick was it ? is it cored or solid glass?

    • @WhenSailing
      @WhenSailing  2 роки тому

      Hi there:) it was exactly 1 cm thick? loads of individual layers of glass, why do you ask?:)

      @@WhenSailing just wondering, I have a 2005 , 393, that's a little thinner than I would like but there is the liner in there as well.

      Niiice! want to go there in a few weeks! how is sailing there? can you explore a bit ftom different anchorages? curacao is quite limited and you only have one main anchorage😅
