I think the 6.5 Grendel is undoubtedly the best performing cartridge in the Howa mini action, but because of the cost of ammo and availability I got mine in 7.62 x 39. If i was a re-loader I would have gone for the 6.5. Great content. Cheers
Before Tikka started making the T3, they had rifles in 3 different action sizes. These were the M590, M595 and M690. They are much sought after because, as good as the T3 is, these earlier rifles were better
Spot on, they were better, I had a M590 in .222, I sold it years ago to my brother and it is still going strong. I bought a 22-250 T3, to be honest I don't like it. Now to get a "new M590" I need to look at the Sako.
I bought a Howa .223 sportier short action (not mini) as it was on sale. The only mini actions available were with Varmint barrels… COVID supply issues here in Australia… I’ll just make do….

My Sako L461 in .222 is my 'I'm gonna take it with me when I die' rifle. Beautifully machined, super smooth to operate, deadly accurate with Nosler Ballistic Tips and H322 powder., and a sheer joy to handle.

I love the 527 action, just waiting for them to chamber all variants in the 6.5 grendel. Nice video, I don't usually subscribe but I did for this channel. Well presented.
The longest action in a mid cartridge was Weatherby. Roy first introduced his 240 Weatherby in the full length action he used for his 300 and 340. They’re few and far between.
That's a super fine rifle - I had one not that many years ago. I like the small calibers in the long actions; strange but true - my liking them I mean. Thanks for the note.
I dearly wish I never sold my Marlin 322. So darn accurate. I have found a couple recently so hopefully I can replace it sooner rather than later. Love your videos keep'em coming
I have the Howa Miniaction in 6.5 Grendel and it shoots really well. The only thing that I didn’t care for was the bottom trigger guard/mag release design. It’s all plastic and it’s very easy to bump the mag release and lose mags in the field. Fortunately there’s an aftermarket company that machines a billet aluminum trigger guard and a redesigned mag release system that’s all metal. It really makes the gun more enjoyable to carry and the bedding screws are cinching down on metal instead of plastic. I don’t usually jump on the latest and greatest calibers but the Gredel is an exceptionally accurate round with very mild recoil. Perfect for anyone looking for a medium range deer rifle or just a fun target rifle. Aftermarket accessories are readily available for them as well.
Howa 1500 does a mini, short, and long action. I wish more gunmakers did this. Sako 85 does this but even more extensive. XS, S, M, L, XL as far as I’m aware.
Thanks Bryce! I had to go to the nearest gun store - and sure enough - the .308 and .243 were shorter. I'll have to familiarize myself with the Sako line.
A Marlin with a Sako action. I guess it made sense to use that action rather than tooling up to make their own. Good quality in any case. Thanks for the lesson on action size!
You have to try the 6.5 Grendel. It has ruined me over every other AR-15 cartridge and with light felt recoil, shooting the same bullet weight as the typical 7.62x39, for small to medium game and precision shooting, it excels. Thank you for your time and insight. Love the channel.
I have the howa mini in 6.5 grendel. Shot badly. 2.5 to 3 inch groups. Crap stock, trigger far to heavy. After taking up the first pressure I had a long pause waiting for it to fire. So I glued 6mm micarta in the barrel channel. Still hidn't fix flexx probs. Then I routed out and fully bedded the action. Now just waiting for a 2lb trigger spring kit. Looking forward to the kit to arrive so I can shoot it.

There's a 'walnut hunter' model of the mini action on the howa website. Might scoop one up when they get onto store shelves. Already have a 527 carbine.
Thanks for sending Ryan - I was emailing them for awhile about a walnut model - I'm sure their decision had nothing to do with me - but nice to see in the line up.
With the myriad short action magnums such as the Ruger RCM, the SAUMs, the WSMs maybe we’ll see more makers going to short actions. Otherwise, why make short magnums? JMHO. Am I on the right path here?
Could be - I spoke with a few people and a couple of dealers who seem to think the short actions are just about done and so are the WSM and WSSM cartridges. I still hear from people buying the 270 wsm and 300 wsm - not much else. The short action .223s are covered by howa and CZ - but maybe there is room for more. Hard to tell right now.

This was a really great vid. I have always wondered why miltary bolt guns like the M24 and M40 are referred to as having Rem700 "Long & Short" actions. This goes some way to explaining the why's and how's of the differences. Although you did tend to wander off topic a little. Nonetheless great vid for someone interested in getting into target shooting. Regards from Australia
Yeah I agree man having a heavy long action is a bit of overkill, unless you're shooting something big it's just excess weight that really doesn't assist with accuracy...
There is only one complaint I have with the Howa mini action, that is the detachable mag is easily dropped unintentionally because of where the mag catch is. Just slide your hand back down the stock a bit, as you do if your used to carrying a rifle with a flat floor plate and pop,, out it drops. easily fixed im sure, but just thought id mention that. Nothing like discovering you lost your mag 500 yards back when your walking into your hunting spot
You can help mitigate this by replacing the magazine catch spring with a heavier one. It won't help hard hits to the catch, but it won't drop it from a casual brush against the release lever.
After discovering the Grendel in my semi auto, I really had a desire to have one in a bolt gun. I thought about building one on a 700 receiver. Then I found a used CZ 527 American in the Grendel online one night. I purchased it and am glad I did. This thing is sweet. It had a Vortex scope on it and instead of using the factory rings they put a base on it and higher rings, which I didn't like. It raised the scope too much. I put the CZ rings on it and couldn't sight the scope in. So I put a Burris on it to see if it was the rifle or scope. It was the scope so I will be sending the Vortex back. I really like the Burris more but I bought it for my semi auto. It's really sweet with the Burris on it. Can't wait to shoot it off of the bench.
Hi Phillip - my story is the same about the Grendel but with a different rifle : I bought a mini-Howa. What can I say. The Grendel in this rifle is incredibly accurate, easy to use with little recoil, excellent ballistics and with the right bullets at the right ranges - very versatile. Your CZ will likely be the same or better. I like the Burris as well. Like most people, I find the better glass in better scopes worth the price - I can see the holes in the target : ) All the best to you.
Never understood CZ and Brno. Are those the same brand? I think they are excellent rifles. I have a CZ 455 .22 and a Brno 502.2 12/7x57r. Not fancy in any way but they will always work, and they do it good!
My understanding is Tikka/Sako decided on one action size for a more cost effective manufacturing process. Tikka’s are a more price point rifle too, for whatever that’s worth. Good topic to address though. Thanks again.
I liked the size and style of the Howa 1500 and almost bought one back in the mid 1990's. But upon handling one I found that the action had quite a bit of tool marks, but most notably was the amount of slop and play in the bolt to receiver fit. It seemed to lock up tight but when open rattled around up and down, left to right and in every other direction you could think of. This allowed virtually no clearance between the bolt shroud and the comb of the stock. It was noisy, loose and it would bind when operated. The rough tooling marks did not aid in this. But, the design and overall look were great. A true Mini Mark X action it was. I can't speak of how they are now, and if Howa corrected the problems I encountered. I do see they sell this action alone so gunsmiths must be getting requests to build up rifles on them. So, I opted not to get one and instead found the Remington Model 7 with its short action to be the better choice. If at the time the CZ was available here I would have gone with that seeing as how I was top heavy with Rem. 700's. The detachable box magazine, true short action based on the 98 Mauser, solid reputation and overall good looks of the CZ product line would have made it an easy choice to make. The CZ was/is chambered for the 22 Hornet and is a fun gun and a good shooter. I too would love to see someone come out with something in 8mm Kurtz, and ammo made for it . It would fill the bill for a short action round with medium range ballistics in a well thought out caliber, case and bullet weight . For hunting it could do anything the .30 - 30 could and even the .32 Win.
Hi Bob - the mini - Mauser by Zastava has some play in it for sure; I like the CZ in 7.62x39 as well - that action has been around a long time - I think they called it "Fox" for awhile - maybe still do. The Howa mini action in 6.5 Grendel is a favorite of mine - and they are smooth and being push feed are smooth. Anyway, plenty to choose from. All the best.
USOG its a replacement rifle. For years I shot a Interarms mrk X .223 that I got in the 90s as general hunting rife. The mini howa is just as light easy to use from anywhere from rainforest to grasslands. The magazine is a boon over the standard floor plate
I always wamted to take one of these micro action's in 223 and fit it with homeade spartinesq style folding stock. Maybe something made out of a piece of half round wood or polymer....just forward of the mag enough to get a hand on. I would fit a small wire folding stock, maybe from an m1 carbine. Something on the lines of a modern day M4 survival rifle. With a couple of 22lr or 22 mag adapter converters, i could hunt small game to hogs amd deer all with one gun...and that one gun would be very small and lightweight.
Got to agree, I like the Ruger scout rifle in .223 but that bloody stupid .308 size magazine is bloody ridiculous. Other than that I would have bought one a long time ago.
Can you compare side by side the Howa and the Vanguard? Does Howa do the barrels for Weatherby Vanguards, or Weatherby? I dont own either but always thought they both had smooth actions. In the price range of Howa/Vanguards or other Brands similarly priced, which do you think has the quickest action? Im thinking maybe Tikka on that but was wondering what you would say. Reason I ask, is If I set up a hog hunting bolt action, with a Red dot sight, I want it to be quick, for hogs on the run. Ruger Americans or something with a 3 lug bolt less lifting height may work if its quick. I wont be buying real expensive straight pulls like a Blaser rifle.
@@WayStedYou Yeah, I never did this red dot configuration with bolt action. Changed my mind. I knew Howa/Vanguard are same actions basically, just didn't know if they used Howa or Weatherby barrels on finished product of the Vanguard. The Vanguard barrels usually are a little longer, than the Howa. Id like to snag one, the other, or both, but not with todays prices. Pretty sad how things are, and by design.
Hi - There are many small bolt action center fires out there - older ones such as the Winchester 43 Savage 25-20 and newer ones such as the discontinued CZ527. The Remington Model 7 is small-ish but the most common, excellent mini is the Howa. I have more than one - all excellent. Sorry I don't have dimensions.
I just recently learned that the howa 1500 action is closely based on the howa goldenbear. Witch is closely based off the sako L61R . Really cool stuff. Now I Kno why my w vanguard is so accurate n smooth
I sold CZ's in 223 to pro goat shooters in the late 1980's. They didn't handle the work well. First thing to pack up was the magazine. They shifted to Tikka's with no further problems.
Beretta cuts cost in every way they can. We used to have three major weapon-factories but now only Sako (owned by Beretta) and its cheaper branch Tikka. But the same has happened all over western Europa; Spain, France, UK...
it appears CZ has replaced its entire center fire line with the model 600 now. no more cz527, 550, 557 etc. doesnt matter how good the new stuff is, the history and legacy of the old rifles was without equal.
Hi Blind Freddy - I don't mind the question at all. When I started my channel I had many wig and rug and toupee questions as well as how life is with a lame eye. These were sincere questions. I guess I must have the worst barber in history. I guess my hair is so thick and the No Country for Old Men hair style so bad - people think I have a wig. Since the early videos I ask for shorter hair cuts and ask the barber to make things less of a cap. Still, I get questions and comments about the lame eye, the wig, and Parkinson's. So far - negative on all 3 : ) Thanks for the question and all the best.

Like most people, I find the better glass in better scopes worth the price - I can see the holes in the target : ) All the best to you.
thanks for the informative reveiw
Never understood CZ and Brno. Are those the same brand? I think they are excellent rifles. I have a CZ 455 .22 and a Brno 502.2 12/7x57r. Not fancy in any way but they will always work, and they do it good!
No,they are 2 separate factory's CZ makes rifles and pistols and Brno makes break action arms, shotguns, combi rifles etc.
Always Great! Thanks!
I own the mini howa in .223 can not fault it as a pig/ roo rig
High praise as that's a working gun - likely heat and sand and dust. I think Howa has a home run gun in the mini. Thanks for writing.
Sounds like a plan! That would be a fine project with a useful result.
Got to agree, I like the Ruger scout rifle in .223 but that bloody stupid .308 size magazine is bloody ridiculous. Other than that I would have bought one a long time ago.
Just buy an aftermarket double stack mag. I did. Shortens it by quite a bit. The steel mags are very nice though if a little bulky.
Thank you I wasn't aware you could get double stack mags.
Howa makes the vanguard action to weatherbys specs and the mark V is made in the USA
Pretty sad how things are, and by design.
make a video on building your own bolt action rifle. that sounds cool.
Please excuse my spelling error I was using the voice text the print is so small on phone
Out of all of the micro actions, which one would you say has the smallest dimensions, and how much smaller is ot than its next micro competitor?
Hi - There are many small bolt action center fires out there - older ones such as the Winchester 43 Savage 25-20 and newer ones such as the discontinued CZ527. The Remington Model 7 is small-ish but the most common, excellent mini is the Howa. I have more than one - all excellent. Sorry I don't have dimensions.
I found the stocks on the Howa rilfe very flexible
They could be - I'm not the best at testing flex. Good to know though.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I notice if you attach a bipod take a shoot the sling stud touches the barrel !! Seen it happened on 2 Howa's
Marlin/Sako 322, 8lbs. Tikka t3, 6.5lbs
Great tutorial video
You really need to get Sako L-46 in 7x33. Now that is a handy rifle and caliber.
Hi Teppo - I've been looking for years - they offer me hen's teeth and lottery tickets : ) One of these years I hope to find one.
so hens teeth and lotto-tickets? hmm, I got this one bridge for sale, interested? :D
I just recently learned that the howa 1500 action is closely based on the howa goldenbear. Witch is closely based off the sako L61R . Really cool stuff. Now I Kno why my w vanguard is so accurate n smooth
Hi John - I didn't know the heritage - but I do know the Vanuard is fantastic : )
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns yea vanguards are great. I'll def be sticking with them for actual in Field use rifles. There hard to beat
25-45 sharps please, properly sized action for caliber is just right. Some of the 16ga shotguns where 12ga receiver with 16ga bbl, ugh no good.
I know what you mean.
I sold CZ's in 223 to pro goat shooters in the late 1980's. They didn't handle the work well. First thing to pack up was the magazine. They shifted to Tikka's with no further problems.
I love my weatherby vanguard weatherguard bronze. In . 308.
Striking rifle for sure
Very good video .
Thank you!
How about the HOWA 308 size?
I have to find - good idea
They have 223 Weatherby vanguard and the action is correct for the caliber. I have one.
Thanks Conrad!
I was told tikka did it because of cost. They only have to make one receiver
They should allocate some funds to a smaller action. You're right though...cheaper to make one size fits all.
Beretta cuts cost in every way they can.
We used to have three major weapon-factories but now only Sako (owned by Beretta) and its cheaper branch Tikka.
But the same has happened all over western Europa; Spain, France, UK...
😀😊🇺🇸👍🏼 Great Video Great Topic
Dear your black rifle . He is wooden or plastic parts without barrel
Hello - the stock is plastic and so is the magazine - the rest is steel/metal.
The cz is my favorite...
Great choice
it appears CZ has replaced its entire center fire line with the model 600 now. no more cz527, 550, 557 etc. doesnt matter how good the new stuff is, the history and legacy of the old rifles was without equal.
I agree 100%
👍
im so sad cz fucked up and discontinued the cz 527
Maybe they will return.
howa has long action, short action, mini action
All superb - although I like the mini best.
I dislike the oversize magazine.
Hi BF - they sure do change the character of the rifle. I'm not so thrilled either - but they work.
Mike
I don't mean to be rude but are you wearing wig?
Hi Blind Freddy - I don't mind the question at all. When I started my channel I had many wig and rug and toupee questions as well as how life is with a lame eye. These were sincere questions. I guess I must have the worst barber in history. I guess my hair is so thick and the No Country for Old Men hair style so bad - people think I have a wig. Since the early videos I ask for shorter hair cuts and ask the barber to make things less of a cap. Still, I get questions and comments about the lame eye, the wig, and Parkinson's. So far - negative on all 3 : ) Thanks for the question and all the best.
Well mate you've won a subscriber, you have 12,000 people following you and you took the time to answer my honest question without being nasty or rude. Sorry about the bung eye and Parkinsons. I didn't know. Keep up the good work.
thanks for the informative reveiw
Most welcome Simon.
