Great video but I do have a different opinion about traveling with primes. I use primes for professional work and love the 18mm f1/4WR lens for sharpness and utility. You say we can always crop and that’s true, but we cannot add wide to a 33mm if we need so, that’s the reason why the 18mm is my favorite focal length on primes for street photography too. When it comes to travel, I put my pride away and I started using a zoom lens mostly for 2 reasons. 1 - I own 2 cameras but I want to travel only with 1 for weight reasons. I love to make the exercise of zooming with my feet and all that stuff but that’s nice when I’m doing street photography here in Hong Kong where I convince myself that with primes I loose some photos but I’ll get others as result of restricting myself of using a zoom and that’s the way to go with my xpro3 on street. I assume that compromise. Traveling is different, I want the flexibility and option of not loosing a shot. That being said, once I found myself carrying a bunch of primes with all the weigh those bring and asking myself if I should I take my second camera… all that (and less dust into my sensor) led me to the 2nd reason why a zoom now: 2 - if you are not traveling alone, it’s sometimes time consuming to be changing lenses. Either one loses time or sometimes does not have time to be changing lenses and loses shots. My wife has a lot of patience but I don’t want to submit her to a process she does not make part of. Currently I use the “ugly duck” zoom xf16-80 f/4 and I love it. It’s a bit slow at low light but I can take the 18mmf1.4 or… we adapt our photography style. A Xt5 with ibis and the 16-80 with OIS, it’s a myth that we cannot do great shots at low light with a f/4 zoom. Better, I own this lens for 4 years and don’t think about change it but if it was now, I would get the sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for travel since my Xt5 has ibis (sigma lacks OIS) So I own a zoom just for the convenience of travel with my wife and I’ll buy the second one, the xf70-300. This xf zoom range with no “red label” are underrated and I don’t mind those are not f/2.8 when those are tack sharp for traveling, high level image stabilization, weather sealed, so light to carry and I’m covered from 16mm to 300mm. And the 16-80 is such a joy to use, I found myself understanding the usage of the “extra reach” if compared to Tamron 17-70 or Sigma 18-50. I’m an event photographer for a living, a street photographer and documentary for passion and a traveler photographer as happy husband of a travel addicted wife 😂. After travelled all over the world, there were more the times I regretted to not having a zoom than I regretted to don’t have a prime with me when traveling. From my perspective after years of traveling, dozens of cameras, some hernias in my back, lens falling, dust in sensors, photos lost, there’s a place for primes but that’s more like a photography style, not for traveling to me now. Why f/1.4 if I’m not exploring the DOF most of the time or I can go to ISO 6400 on nowadays cameras or, I can use a 1/8 shutter speed. But I’m speaking here just to the possible readers, you said it well at the beginning: UA-cam and traveling is your job and you want to use the best tool for the job and that’s fair enough. I just don’t think it will be the case if 80% of the people who see this videos and get inspiration from those. Same for Roman Fox or other UA-camr travelers. I loved the video and I’m a big fan of your channel but guys, zooms all the way for traveling if you’re not pixel peppers or large printing fellas (most of our travel photos end up in IG anyway) 💪🏻 and that’s coming from a primes guy.

Nice video, Jay. I traveled with the 16 f/2.8 and 35mm 1.4 recently. I carry the 18-55mm when I needed a little more reach. Worked well. All lightweight too!

I am currently traveling with both the 18 and the 33. The 33 has come in handy, but I’m finding the 18 is the one I’m using the most. I also brought the 27 f2.8 pancake and that one’s quite nice too when you want a lighter kit.

X-e1 and the TT Artisan 23mm f1.4 in Rome has been amazing, highly recommend.
I have the sigma 18-50 2.8 for when I am not sure what i will shoot like when im doing a tour, but wandering around Rome with the 23mm is wonderful

On city trip/travel limited to urban areas I limit myself with 2: 16&33 f1.4 and 2 bodies. I love shooting w/ primes and can shoot in low light. But with the weight loss of the new 16-55 it might finds its way in my kit at some point as the one lens solution.

I choose 18 1, 4 any day of the week and use my feet instead when I have to get closer.

does the facial distortion bother you at all with the 18?

@@ayim01 it will never be as flattering as a 50 or 85+ fl equiv but if don't get too close, and keep the subject well centered it should be ok. (I don't have the 18, but the old 16 F1.4, and once you get used to it, portraiture gets easier.)

Does that mean you have to change lens quite often when you see a different focal length is needed? I have just bought the 27mm f2.8 and 14mm f2.8 to go on my x-s10 when in London. I will see how I get on but I think I will prefer my 16-55 f2.8 more.
