Thanks for Watching and that is a very good point. I guess I was hoping to find a smoking gun when I took the time to take this all apart and find the manufacture flaw when in the end the only real solution was to use a Bunn coffee filter. on a side note this video has helped some with the grab a cup or pause brew part of the brew basket. several viewers have had questions of how to assemble the plunger with the spring and small rubber washer. Thanks again for watching.

The problem is the filters, they make them shorter now and that’s what the issue is.

The filters or shorter and thicker, and the cheap/no quality control machines they put out now run too hot so they fill the basket faster than the filter can strain.

I don’t see how a coffee filter makes any difference since it’s a SPRING issue and not a filter issue. The springs don’t pop up at all to allow liquid to flow through.

I felt like a really dumb crazy person. I think it's a mix of a lot of the problems you mentioned. The water flows into the basket at a REALLY fast rate. I found it can fill an entire basket in about 5ish seconds. Even if flow stops, or slows a little bit, it backs up and floods the coffee with grounds. I also find once it happens once, it has happens more often.
I don't know who Mr. Coffee is personally, but we'd have some words about the coffee soup I have to endure every morning at the moment.

A few years ago, coffee filters were advertised as stopping, or trapping more oils. That is when I started noticing overflow issues. There are filters for commercial makers that are taller. Probably are designed for Bunn. I find them at office supply stores.

This is how I fixed mine , There is a little hole on the bottom of the plunger Stem, it's hard to see look at it in the light , It get full stuffed with coffee grounds and back up the whole process. I took a little small drill bit to make to hole about double the size, now it works perfect again. Only 1 problem , You have to wait until it stops dripping to the 12 cup mark , if you pull it out too soon to get your coffee it will drip until you put it back and make a mess.

    Eureka!
I've had the same issues with a new 5-cup Mr Coffee. I noticed that the swing arm has a lot of play. It allows the basket to fit loosely atop the carafe, slowing the drip into the carafe while the filler spout continues to add hot water. Taller filters don't help; when the lid guides the swing arm over the basket, it collapses some of them. I think the basket being forced up by the carafe also slows the draining process.
I did have some luck carefully stretching the spring but I'm going to grab my bit and tiny round file to try this.
The older machines worked like a charm. I just had one give out beyond repair but I saved the pause plunger from it.
May I suggest...find an older machine at a thrift store or garage sale and swap the plunger mechanism if altering your existing one is too difficult. Or just clean it up and use it, instead.
Thanks for the great videos, Dad!

I also have a Mr Coffee with the pause brewing plunger offset from the center. My problem was that the swing arm when in the brew position did not hold the basket in the normal seat position resulting in a open pause value.. Instead, the pause spring forced the basket up enough to mostly close the brewing pause valve. My solution was to clip the basket in the correct seating position with a small binder clip.

Newer brewers need taller filters. I noticed how the oldrr paper basket filters I used fit my older brewers which never had an overflow problem, they reach the top of the paper filter holder. My older filters fit lower in newer modern basket paper filter holder. I researched taller filters and noted Bunn filters were taller. Used them in new brewer, overflow problem solved.

Just read that Consumer Reports added an overflow test to its reviews since 50% of all drip coffee makers have this problem. I have a new Mr. Coffee that is unusable. I completely removed the pause brewing plunger, changed coarseness of the grind and added a bit less coffee. Still overflowed. I changed filters but even those I purchased aren't as tall as the Bunn and overflowed a bit. The only other thing I can think of is the rate of water flow with the Mr. Coffee models. I'll try the Bunn filters and then try another brand of maker.

I have been looking for a solution to this problem for a while. I have used Mr. Coffee unbleached filters in the 50 count box for at least 20 years, they always worked fine. Recently they started overflowing, and I noticed they felt different than they used to. I used the same coffee maker and the same packaged filters but overflowed and they never used to. I think the filters are made differently than they used to be, apparently more restrictive. I have tried different filters with the same result. Coffee machine manufacturers do not make their filters, they are made at a paper making plant to requested specs. The taller filter is a good solution if nothing changes in the filters. I did call Mr. Coffee about the problem and they acknowledged my concern and offered me a case of filters, I did not want a case of filters that don't work right.

I think it’s the filter material they’ve started using since the Pandemic. Put a few ice cubes in the reservoir with the water, or use refrigerated cold water: it slows down the brewing process a little.

I run mine without the plunger in (center coffee pot model from his vid) It still overflows even when set to strong (which slows the water down). Long story short the water is extracted too quickly for the coffee filters. And it is definitely the coffee filter material. If I purchase Great value coffee filters it doesn't over flow. Almost, but just makes the line. They are manufacturing these pots to brew some what quickly but not in conjunction with the new filter paper which seems as if its coated with something.

I have a Proctor Silex Coffee Maker; it just recently started doing the overflow problem. Coffee grinds and coffee all over the counter. I wasn't sure what the problem was until I watched your video. Sometimes I use a permanent filter basket; when I do, the coffee doesn't overflow. But I like the taste of my coffee better when I use the paper filters. I don't aways buy the same filters ; I buy cheaper filters in bulk or whatever's on sale. The coffee filters I used to buy seemed to be bigger then the ones I have now, but I don't remember what brand they were. They were'nt Bunn brand, although I know the Bunn brand. I worked in a restaurant for almost 13 years; we had the commercial Bunn Coffee Makers with the coffee filters that came with them. Very good quality, dependable filters, worked perfectly every time. I just didn't know you could buy them retail; I always thought they were a commercial product for restaurants and other businesses with commercial coffee machines. I'm going to go online later and look for a place to buy some Bunn Coffee Filters; I live in Winnpeg, MB, Canada but nowadays you can buy just about anything, from anywhere, online. Thanks for your wonderful, very helpful video!

Seems to me that if you increase the rate of flow out of the basket and into the pot, you're just making weaker coffee. I'd like to simply find slightly taller filters, but unbleached. It sounds like Bunn makes the taller filters, but they're bleached.

I'm blaming the filters 100 percent. I have had a Black & Decker coffee maker for years and never experienced this problem until about 2 years ago. I buy the same "Melitta" brand filters from the grocery store that I always have. At first, I thought it was because I occasionally put the filter basket in the top rack of the dishwasher, and I thought that maybe it had warped or been damaged. Another thought I had was that it might have something to do with the water. I've lived in three different houses over the past few years, each with a different water supply. My current home has a whole-home filtration system, and I further filter the water by using my refrigerator's door dispenser. Since the problem persisted, I bought a new Mr. Coffee coffee maker from Walmart. When I saw that it did the same thing, I returned it and got a refund. Since I don't like the aroma and way coffee smells after it brewed and then cooks for a while, I bought another B&D but this time with an insulated decanter and no hot plate. Anyway, this new one does the exact same thing. However, it came with a permanent filter that I tried, but it left too much "slush" in the coffee. As a last resort, I thought about the filter material itself. I went to Target and found their store-brand filter, going with the brown paper option. I thought I'd give it a try, and it does the same thing, but not quite as bad. Having said all of this, thank you for your video and your determination. By the way, my workaround has been to only brew up to six cups at a time. Good luck to you and everyone else who has this issue. I'm giving you a thumbs up, and I'll go to your Amazon storefront to find and purchase the Bunn filters.

We have the model in the middle. We always use the Strong setting as that seems to pump the water slower. But it still overflows. We've had some success with Bunn filters, but they are not always consistent in height. Some in the current package aren't any taller than regular cheap filters. Has anybody experimented with different grinds? We use the Walmart store brand. It says it's Medium, but it seems fine and pasty. I suspect it is clogging the filter and then the liquid can't get out fast enough. My apologies if this has already been discussed here; I haven't had time to read all the comments.

  • @erikweisz299
    @erikweisz299 5 місяців тому +1

Very simple. Your coffee maker is cheap and pushes coffee through too fast. It has nothing to do with the plunger, it's that the water can't flow through the grounds and filter at the same rate the cheap machine is adding it. Either get a higher quality machine, poke a billion super tiny holes in your filters every time you want a pot of coffee, or get taller and preferably thinner filters. Even if you remove the plunger all together You'll still have the same issue. Oh yeah, another option is that you can add ice to the tank so it can't boil the water and run it through as fast. And for those that require warning labels on toasters not to make toast under water while taking a bath, common sense dictates that putting ice in the tank and setting the timer to start brewing the next day isn't gonna work.

Those couple of adjustments seem to have fixed it, but here's the funny part... we tend to say "we do not like grounds in our coffee" right... turn that around. "who _WANTS_ grounds in their coffee", "well have I got the brewer for _YOU_, allow me to introduce you..." 🤣

I have the middle coffee maker, and I am having the same issue. It is not the drain plunger, as I removed mine and ran it without the assembly in it. Same issue. On my old Mr Coffee, we are talking 10 or 12 years ago, I never had this problem. I think that there is an issue with the manufacture of these coffee makers. There is something different about the baskets. Are they smaller? Smaller ridges inside the basket? I don't know. I wish I had an old coffee maker to compare side by side. But it is definitely not the "Pause" plunger assembly.

My basket fills up faster than it can drain, And I end up with coffee grounds underneath the filter, And it's been happening for I don't know how long. I even tried cleaning mine with vinegar because I've had it 4 years, And that still doesn't work, It just brews faster than it can drain. I have the coffee pot on the right, the older one and it does brew faster than it can drain, then I end up with coffee grounds in my coffee underneath the filter in the basket, clogging the little spring mechanism.

How do I clean it if some of it spills into the water basin?? This hasn’t happened before so I’m not sure what to do. I noticed the overflow early on and just have learned to live with watered down coffee and smaller batches. I made a mistake and put too much coffee this time

  • @bl8388

** Updated Feb 2024 trouble shooting.
So their quality sucks. My brand new Mr. Coffee no longer has the hole through the center, but similar issues because the basket has too much play up top, giving it too much room for the spring to push up and lessen the space for the coffee's flow rate into the pot. If the spring doesn't have enough pressure pushing down on it from the bottom of the filter cup, up top, the drain narrows and the coffee runs over up top. This gets coffee grounds in your pot.
So I found putting a thin layer of aluminum foil underneath the pot (between the pot and the heat plate) was able to increase the rate. It still gets close to overflowing up top. I expect it to do so in the future. Since aluminum is more insulator than the hot plate (iron) I make sure not to cover most of the bottom with it. Only about half with the aluminum spacer.
Another option is to brew about half the water. then brew the other half after the coffee drains into the pot.
(Or get a better brand coffee brewer).

I just checked the manual for my brand new Mr Coffee and it says to add only 9 level TBS of coffee to brew 12 cups. If his manual says add 12 TBS then it's no wonder his coffee maker is over-flowing.

    • @JustADad
      @JustADad  3 роки тому

Yeah sometimes they can be confusing as to what they say to add. Some say 1 tablespoon per cup, and others say to add 9 for 12 cups. I tried to make a video on this but I think I was just more confused after I made the video.

That is a good question. I am sorry I don't, I would say give Mr Coffee A call but I have tried in the past to call them and there offices are closed because of Covid. I'm also gonna prance my ass out on a limb and say you didn't buy 3 machines in a week and most likely didn't speak to Mr Coffee either. I strongly believe you're making that up to back up your story and not sound like an idiot for your 1st comment. You could always prove me wrong and post up a pic or vid of your receipts to show you're not trying to "Gaslight" everyone on here. Although I don't suspect you'll do that, and you'll either take offense and say you don't need to prove yourself or you'll say you don't have them. Either way, just know that I know. As does everyone else.😂

Using the term "gaslight" leads me to believe you're a Gen z. So in that case, and the fact that you've had THREE machines in 1 week do this to you makes me have to ask the question, "When you're running the machine without filters, are you still running coffee grounds?" I would hope not, because obviously the coffee grounds with no filter would clog the hole on bottom and stop all flow of liquid there for making it overflow over the top of the basket. And yes, I realize that that's common sense, but with Gen z that's a very uncommon thing. And don't bother saying you're not a Gen z because you automatically assumed I was attacking you and threw in what your Gen feels is a big psychiatrist term to show how smart you are. So u gave yourself away.😂
