When Photoshop Starts to Lag, Here's What to Do!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лис 2017
- Get Photoshop Up and Running Smoothly Again! You're working on your image and suddenly Photoshop starts to lag! The brush lags, the program runs very slow, it freezes from time to time. In that case, probably you might have filled up the memory of the program. Here's how to make the software breathe again.
This fix is for situations where there is a lag due to a lot of lengthy work with tons of layers or actions/brush strokes etc. If the sluggishness or lag always had been there and is persistent, it is a different issue, probably something to do with the processor, RAM, Operating System, Disk Space, Photoshop version etc.
I hope this video helps you. Thank you for watching!

him: adds 500 layers
me: uses pencil tool and paints 3 squares
my photoshop: aight ima head out
While me here, adding just 1 layer
Photoshop: guess you know the rules
"Its probably your processor"
I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THAT
Same....
what you have an intel i9? xD
:o
ive got a ryzen 9 3900XT & 32 GB of RAM 3200mhz and my brush still has delay xD
@@fantooo photoshop recommends only Intel and AMD processor
LOL. "Is your PS getting slow after adding 200 adjustment layers?"
Dude you have to be the easiest person to listen to... if only you taught maths lol
I agree😂
Truueee--- 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah 😂
Oh hell yeah 👍👍👍👍
Coming from someone who is currently in school for graphic design at a D1 university. I must say you are indeed the best teacher I have had. Keep up the great work man!
Oh my God you just saved my whole night. I’ve been working on an incredibly detail digital art piece and I could not color at all because the lag was so bad. It got to the point that I would get the loading icon while the computer sluggishly tried to catch up. After following your directions, CS6 is running brilliantly once again. Now I can finish my picture without frustration anymore.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you so much!! I also want to thank you for getting right to it instead of dragging on for ten minutes over a two minute fix.
Hello,, please can you tell me what you did to fix it, I use photoshop cs6 too but I cant draw because it doesn't respond correctly,
This video isn't playing which is why I'm asking🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@RiyaKumari-nx3wy It was around ten months ago when I watched it thus I unfortunately do not quite remember what all was taking place in it. The video will not play for me either anymore. From what I recall, it was something to do with deleting the history files and how much the program was allowed to go back. So I limited it to having only ten recent files instead of its default and instructed the delete history to have only a certain number to go back.
I also told the program to use more RAM as well as gave more permission for graphic use. You can find the options for it in preferences and interface. I do not run as many things alongside it anymore to give more leeway to that, defrag my hard drive often and delete the Photoshop main files when I finish my pictures. As I will only want the final product anyway at that point. If you know for a fact you will not be coming back to use the file, delete it. If not, save it but don't hang on to them too long in the unsure phases.
Give yourself a four week window. If you haven't cared about touching it in four weeks, there's a very good chance you never will. I also recommend getting a large thumb drive. You can get terabyte ones off Amazon for great prices and they are wonderful for saving those PNGs, GIFs and JPEGs. I also recommend making sure you don't have too many windows open in program, there's only so much a computer can tolerate. Especially if you are working on a five year old laptop such as myself.
@@rosebud10123 thanks so much for replying, although I have tried all of what you mentioned already, my PC is quite old too( around 7 years now) but it'd been running photoshop without any problems just until a few days ago, I dont know what caused it but I'll try fixing it.. thanks again for the reply🤗
i have a 12 core cpu with beefy ram, how the hell is am i struggling wit 3 layes
Yeah for me its over when i use the text tool...2020 has pretty bad performance
Its blc your a space tuna
you are using the layer size too big , proably thats the reason.
Make a lower resolution (72 for paint ect if im correct and 300 for printing) use a low pixel layer too, 3000 x 3000 might be fine for your laptop.
I use amd a4 processor , i cant go further than 2000x2000 pixels :c dont chase for the quality, normally not even a single human could spot the difference unless you are unmesh
Photoshop is badly optimised, affinity photo is a million times faster. No lag when using massive res images
my 16 gb ram and i7 is trash
I was literally just wondering why this was happening. Thought it was the computer itself but this explains it!
Didn’t even know about this trick. I’ve been using ps for 6 years lmao.. THANK YOU!
Once again my guy solves the problem in the quickest amount of time compared to other youtubers (16 min video? comee onnnn)
His tutorial didn't work for me, but this did:
>Photoshop
>Preferences
>Performance
>(Graphics Processor Settings) Advanced Settings
>Drawing Mode: Basic
Done! Mine was on 'Advanced' without realising and that was what was making mine lag.
Now it is as smooth as a hot knife through butter!
Thanks Mr lifesaver
@@sidin4167 No problem!
The man knows his shit, an I have a strong suspicion that he's self taught. Keep up the great videos broski! Now only if you can help fix/teach the slow startup of 2019.
Instruction not clear.. I clicked "Purge" & now I have a bunch of Masked people with Uniquely creative weapons outside my door
I love your videos and watch everyone. "We only accept cash!" Well, "cash" is how cache is pronounced in the US of A! But don't change your delightful way of speaking!
Such an amazing guy. An absolute legend. I searched online for this solution and got nothing. And of course, when it comes to youtube, you're the one that's recommended. I knew I could trust you for this!
This was the best help I could get. My brush wasn't working so after purging it and restarting the application everything was back to normal.
Without this I would've broken my computer and thrown it down the balcony.
this was exactly what i was looking for! thank you very much man!
Thank you so much. I’m an old granny who is waaay behind on this PS stuff, however, I’ve got to learn this so I can put my art in the website I’m working on. *overload* BUT you make learning this so easy! Thank you sir!!
i clicked this video because i think the thumbnail is mocking me saying "your photoshop lagging? Ha, you deserve it!"
Got lag!!! Here’s what to do. Bang!! straight to the point!!! Done!!!! Brilliant. What’s not to like??
Amazing... I had this tool under my eyes all these years and never actually noticed it... Thanks a lot, great useful tip !
A very good tip! Mostly a problem with RAM (so that PS has to constantly write data to the hard drive or SSD), I would think. Pure processing power is far less of a problem in my experience. So before looking for a new machine one might consider to give it more RAM (if possible; 8GB should help, 16GB is even better; most laptops have 4GB, even nowadays, and this is no longer sufficient with modern file sizes …).
What might be an additional problem with current CC versions is their (buggy) use of the GPU - this is what I encountered with InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop (but to use some nice features this has to be on with PS).
@@vmafarah9473 Right you are! Fixed. And thanks for the correction (I'm from a time when 8 MB of RAM was considered HUGE (I can even remember Bill Gates boasting that 640 KB would be more than enough); my first computer was a small 6502 board with a 16 KB memory extension beneath and no operating system to speak of …) 😁
There are several ways of enhancing psd performances in preference settings. A. Depending on what kind of files you are working on, you can set it up for better file handling whether it is a big file or a lot of small ones. B. What I found the most effective thing to do for big file is to add a scratch disk (preferably a ssd), you need that free space available for psd when it is processing heavy duty tasks. C. you can dedicate up to 90% of your processors for psd use. It should still be alright for another Adobe software to work fine at the same time… So before thinking of changing the hardware, try out the settings first, you might end having the same problem quickly with a new laptop. Free space on your HD is key. Last little note on this, psd so far can only use up to 6 processors, so a 12 cores won’t change much from a 6 cores. Look for the highest speed for each rather than a humongous amount of cores… If of course, your main use is for psd….
you have come very far my friend. Still very useful video.
I don't know, it seems everytime I resize the text, it's a bit of laggish.
same here
Even when loading the text tool for the first time
Turn off smoothing if the only thing lagging is your brush. I spent 2 hours trying everything I could think of and that was it.
Use another hard drive for the temp file plus extra memory. Its best not to use the same drive where your operating system is installed. If your operating system is installed on C-drive use a D-drive preferavble SSD
you are the MAN! you are literally my PROFESSOR.
Thanks for easy, concise info and not starting off with "Let's open photoshop, let's open this document, I'm going to select 300 x 300 pixel document.." blah blah. Great production values too!
I'll give it a try. My computer has 128 GB of usable RAM. You'd think I would not have this problem with so much RAM.
You are tutorial is very easy to follow and understand. Beginner's would really appreciate it. Thanks!
Bro 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 no words literally . You made my Photoshop life easier 😂😂 but Truly a Photoshop legend you are ❤️
*SHORT AND SWEET TIP* 👍
Make a ram disc and move the scratch disc to the ram disc. This will make PS really fast. Google for a ram disc app.
You’re channel is great! Very informational and you teach very well and thoroughly.
Hi there! Question- I was told that if I group layers as working, this may help. Does this usually work? And how do you know which ones to group? Also, I was told I could flatten the image, but I don't want to do that so I can re edit later if needed. Any thoughts or ideas about this? Thanks for your great videos!
Always str8 to the point. Thanks!
YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! Please do a video on layering windows the easiest way, like an hdr real estate image. I was trying to do it with the underlying layer slider bars????
Great tip. My Photoshop lags really badly and I know some of it has to do with my laptop but I'm hoping this helps a bit too. Thanks for sharing!
Photoshop lagging also depends on the document size or resolution
Purge all is the best option for most all users. Going forward it is best to get some more memory, one word of caution if you are a Windows user, look at what version of Windows you are using because you have a maximum of how much memory you can use. Only Windows Pro can use 128 of memory, the other versions use less. Next would be to figure out where the bottlenecks are in your system.
Moonpie
thanks. very straight forward and helpful
My issue is that it completely doesn’t updating anything I try to use. I can click around and highlight tools but the picture remains frozen and won’t show that I’m adding towards the photo
My MBP often lags but I'm only editing JPGs of football matches. It's a right pain! It's also when I use Camera Raw.
This is probably a weird question but for me, Photoshop got laggy after I downloaded Illustrator (brushes/undo). All common methods for fixing lag have been utilized when I first got photoshop a while back. I only just recently downloaded Illustrator. Any ideas?
if you don't solve with this fix, right click on the brush and select "reset tool"
maybe something went off and with this you will be able to come back to a normal setting
I always watching your videos and listen to, thank you very much!!
most usefull guy on youtube, no bullshit just help
bhai teri wajha se mera ghar chal raha hai thaank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomuch yrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Dude you are the best! I was never dissapointed about any of your videos. They are all great on point not like the other stupid clickbaity shit.
Great Tips..... Thanks dude... it works!!!
Thanks for sharing this awesome tip, you're awesome!
You r a " My Favourite Type of Teacher".
Which laptop model do you have Unmesh?
Amique Khan looks like a Dell 7000 Series 2 in 1 from the look of it!
omg this helped me - thank you so much! :D
Absolute lifesaver! Subscribed.
What about when the only thing that is lagging is in the print dialogue box? When selecting print size...etc it takes like 30 seconds to respond
I was using Photoshop just fine. A couple of days back I reinstalled windows and now the photoshop keeps lagging. Just after opening Photoshop the entire computer memory ( harddisk and ssd) gets full with temporary files and I cannot do anything. It just freezes the system. Photoshop uses more than 90 %ram even after setting the ram preference to use only 70%. How can I solve this problem ? Please help
Another solution can be an old fation trick. Go to Edit\Preferences\Scratch disks and choose the disk drive that have more space for hiring buy Photoshop for processing...
Alternatively Go to Edit\Preferences\performance and you can adjust the capacity that photoshop consuming in your computer (which is not recomended though)
That's just Adobe's way to force their users to buy newer hardware. They make it more and more load heavy on purpose every new release. CS5 loads in about 5 seconds on a SSD, while Adobe 2020 loads in around 25 ~ 30 seconds on a SSD.
Very informative brother thanks! =)
What should I do, if my brush tool lags - when I use my mouse, everything is OK, it produces a normal stoke. But when I change it to stylus, instead of a stroke I get dots and straight lines. Also sometimes happend to one of my brushes - instead of its usual performance of imitatimg chalk it now looks like something bushy, like a sponge, though the form of the brushes isn't changed. The last problem happend after I tried o definitely someone brushes from PNGs. I tried to reinstall newly downloaded brush pack, but that didn't happend
Unfortunately, this did not work for me. After working awhile the brush or pencil or for that matter any tool lags increasingly. The computer performance has not changed only something in PS CS6
help, whenever i add background to my picture everything stops and it took minutes before it works again....
I just had this problem and thought it was my computer, what fixed the brush for me though was the fact that I didnt realize i had smoothing on in brush settings even though smoothing was shown to be off at the top of my photoshop bar. hopefully this helps someone else with the same issue of brush lag.
lol that didn't work for me PiX, every time I use layers its realy slow to paint a line. I have cleaned windows, system files, and all NO change. what a night mare.. help please.
In my case it really doesn't works. CS6 starts fine and after a couple of days of usage I'm done, I have to reinstall it 'cause nothing else works, if I use CC2019 this doesn't happen.
Awesome man...
U deserve huge number of subscribers...
Always quality content 💯 thank you so much
Dude! I have a high end pc! Simple brushing on PS 2018 lags as hell while at PS 2017 it's buttery smooth. Read this same thing on couple of threads that other users are facing with the latest version.😔😔😔😔
RakeshDX can u give me link of photoshop cc 2017 free version!
hey man! what model and spec laptop you're using at this time?
thanks for this tip. i faced this issue manytimes. this may help to me.
This did helped my but partially. I have used in almost all layers overlay effect which causes lagging. What can i do about that?
what do i do if this didnt fix my problem? it still lags after using this method
It used to be fine with a billion layers with all those blend if options and glows and masks and group masks. No lag. But today, when I open up imense lag. wtf
It’s really helpful. Thank you!
Thank you !!!!!!! it worked for me :) Great video and you know much about photoshop, I will save your link, If I have future problems, You will notice me ^^
Bro it looks like the fiery inferno of hell is behind you, and I like it.
Good Work Brother Keep it up 💪💪💞💙
Thank you brother :)
Dear Unmesh, unfortunately the video is not working anymore. Can you fix it?
h well, that did not work. As a matter of fact, the "All" option was dim and not selectable. Maybe I need to delete PS and then reinstall?
Hi your Tutorials are very very helpful and the best THX
It fixed for some time and starts lagging again when I switch to another project
Do you think Adobe and Windows are a good mix? I am learning so much from your channel, (bless you!) so much so I needed to buy a new laptop!!! I'm on laptop #3 now in a month (started with HP Spectre, Gigabyte Aero 15x and now Surface Book 2...ugh) due to major lag issues. Should this be happening on new laptops with 16gb ram? I'm a PC girl but have been told Adobe was written for Mac....do I need to switch??? I'm ready to cry....
Thats a great tip man, helped me out a tone
Hi, there's a website named "pikbest" which provides photoshop templates. My photoshop works absolutely fine before opening their templates. Every time I open them, it always takes too much time to process even small things. Moreover, I discovered that their templates are not too much big in size (mostly) and even then, I find it very difficult to do any work. Can you please help me out in this matter?
Thank you very much this is really halped me!
Excellent video.
from 6 Months ago , all versions of Photoshop lagging and flickering like hell and freezing on my Pc , I have workstation with Beast comfig , no idea what is wrong with photoshop only. no need to add any layer just open photoshop and everything goes to shit.
This guy know everything
um i have an i9-10900k prossesor and its only using 7% and the gpu uses 40% like that cant be the problem?? photoshop is the only thing lagging
The problem is; Import -scan -then automatically downloaded Bmp file in folder,How to stop it😢 pls reply
Her man question. If I make image size resolution smaller to work and edit in photoshop then when I’m done I increase image size back to original big rresolution , will it be same quality ?
holly hell master of all unibrows
I work in a print shop, so I design banners, car wraps, window wraps, etc. All on Photoshop. All my files are typically 4ft x 8ft with the resolution at 96. I always have multiple layers, text, objects, etc. When I move grouped objects it moves VERY slow. Lots of lag! So annoying.
I will sti tuned lol I am your subscriber now bruhh you are creating really good stuff
You're now a grown man. Smiles. This is 2023
Straight Solution!! Nice Video
Hey umm my ps has a problem when press a button it doesn’t do anything but when press it again I works but it rather does what I previous wanted it to do. I’m not sure if you get me. Lets say I press ctrl+T to transform a layer, now pressing right key would move it to the right and so as the other directions, but pressing right does nothing, pressing up now moves it to the right, meaning it’s rather doing previous actions instead doing the it real time. How’s is this fixed?
I am using Photoshop cc 2018
When I use select and mask Photoshop not working and lag very much
My pc configuration is below
Ram 4gb
Hd 500gb
Processor Intel i5
I'm switching from my autodesk sketchbook to photoshop for my digital art. I don't encounter lag in sketchbook in painting large image but in photoshop seems inconvenient, lots of brush lag even small details of painting.
