“Are video games art” now this is a question that I’m sure many of you have seen over the years and if I were to guess, you’re probably sick and tired of hearing about it. If you were to ask me, this question is pretty outdated. Games have evolved so much that boiling them all down to a simple label is stupid. Some developers are fine with making these gamey-ass video games and others are more interested in exploring the medium in a deeper or unconventional way. Art shouldn’t be restricted to some binary checklist for validation and thankfully most people realize this nowadays. The question shouldn’t be “are video games art,” rather, it should be “What makes video games unique as an art form,” you’d think this would have an easy answer but most devs have completely different views on what it should be. Take a look at Sony’s recent catalogue; it almost feels like they’re embarrassed to be labelled as games. They’re so focused on trying to capture this foe cinematic experience that they lose out on what makes this medium different from the rest. They’re almost ashamed to be games so they try their hardest to be like something you’d see on the silver screen. Sure they can have some fun gameplay, but all of them come with plenty of this, this, and this. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate this new trend of triple A games but they aren’t exactly what I look for.
You compare something like the last of us to new god of war and you’ll notice that they hit a lot of the same superficial beats. Sure both of these games are different upon further examination, but because the core backbone of the experience follows the same template, I can’t help but feel as though they end up feeling kind of samey. As I said, these games aren’t bad but they’re not for me. When I think of games as art, I think of projects with unique creative voices behind them. I think of games that use the interaction that comes with this medium to their advantage and craft experiences you can’t find anywhere else. It was this train of thought that initially lead me into discovering what has easily become one of my favourite games and is a shining example of this medium at its finest.…

I think the other games continued his character arc in a good way, in NMH2 he gets dragged back in because of revenge but he hates all the violence and in TSA he finally found "paradise", a way out, a form of escapism where he could just bail out of the situation he's in and fall into escapism like he wanted but he chooses otherwise and decides to go back even if he doesn't like it and even if it's difficult.
He goes through a whole character arc throughout 1-2-TSA and I really like how it all ties back into the beginning, though I liked NMH3 a decent amount it really felt like Suda51 used all his ideas in TSA because he thought it could be the last game he gets to make (I believe Grasshopper was in a bad financial situation at the time), but even with all the corners being cut on that game it was filled with so much passion and love for video games and what he does, it doesn't diminish the first game for me and it feels like he still really cares about everything he's made.

    • @turtleman7360

3’s great for Travis’ character as you really get to see how he’s grown. In his conversations with his friends he’s somewhat softer and kinder and you get to see fun contrasts between him and Fu personality wise and how they treat their friends respectively. Fu is alone where Travis’ growth allowed him to connect to others and they helped him in the final battle. Fu even has a line about not feeling fear like Travis has in NMH 1 for even more fun parallels.
And Travis actually uses his bloodlust to save the town and uses his assassin skills for something more than personal satisfaction and revenge and becomes a hero in his own way. 3 works really well in how it ties back into the rest of the series thematically and is a great ending to Travis’ character arc.

    • @victorrivera8264

@@turtleman7360 Exactly. While TSA ended his growth arc, NMH3 is basically the cherry on top of it. Playing with a heroic Travis instead of a cynical assassin who just wants to climb up the rankings for Sylvia or revenge, but in NMH3 he does it to save the world. Maybe if there'll be a NMH4 in the (distant) future, they'll make him a mentor for his children, just like Thunder Ryu was for Travis in NMH1

    • @spaciouswheat4580

Yeah I honestly think that in NMH 3 Travis has no genuine character or arc at all. It's literally a tie up all loose ends game. Hence why it's likely the last game as admitted by Suda himself. There's no where else for this series to go. 3 was just made to give fans a 3rd numbered entry and also a flashy game on newer than the Wii hardware

Another part of this game that I feel plays into the theme of isolation is the environment. This was probably due to budget constraints, but during the open-world segments the city of Santa Destroy always feels empty. Unless you count the characters that Travis can train or buy upgrades from and the people that hire you for gigs, there's hardly anyone around aside from the few npcs that you see walking the streets.
This bleeds into some of the cutscenes and bosses also, with the theater Harvey is performing at being completely empty despite Travis and him acting like it's a full house.
All of this, combined with the brief descriptions you get about the city's locations, heavily implies that Santa Destroy is a shitty, dying city and Travis is stuck in it.

I still don't get why Travis is still considered a shut in and a slacker when in reality he gets out and stuff done no matter how insignificant the hustle or how short term it is while being patient not looking for a quick term solution or an easy way out. Trains on a daily basis and knows how to use a blade and wrestle as well riding a badass bike looking fresh as f'ck and not being dependent what most people think of him staying true and honest to himself as well as his hobbies never bullshi**ing others. Thats actually alot of good physical and character traits most could dream of and why he is so enjoyable. If he wasnt such a simp for sylvia and saved that hard earned cash he might be considered a Gigachad of Otakus. He is like the Israel Adesanya of assasins before Adesanya came out on top. He revels in his Otakudom, yes, but a faith misguided is still a strength and ignorance is bliss. Also i love the first encounter between Travis and Death Metal, old guy who is a top ranked assasin in his Villa sipping wine chillin and Travis thinking that this is paradise and what will await him only for Death Metal to respond that this a place to die. And with death comes actual paradise. As he said when you have the strength to take life for yourself that is true wealth and only viewing the scenery is what he needs and being free of desire. For me travis already had the exit to paradise right at home instead of being in a villa it was a motel instead of watching the scenery it was watching anime, takashi miike movies, playing video games and of course being with his adorable cat. Almost everyone has a a "better" life than him which semmed normal but what all have in common and what makes them tragic and miserable is being actual killers and junkies for blood. What he only needed was a less f'd up outlet for his autistic energy and fantasy. Like SUDA 51 using his talents by becoming a game developer, who is a huge nerd for western and japanese media that even biggest fanboys cant keep up with. So its not escapism because of media cause everyone lives in their own bubble in this day and age. But actually being a violent bloodthirsty bastard and selfprojection. Also what set up all those events was not going into sylvias panties but vengeance because his half sister jeane who was also his lover killed his parents. Only later and if you only saw the the dialouge slowed down it is revealed that his father sexually abused her and that her mother commited suicide. Also I think should have actually died by sylvias hands which would be very fitting.

The timing itself is a bit random depending on the attack Travis is blocking

Ah No More Heroes, my introduction to Suda 51. Travis wants to be Dante but in all honesty he comes across more like the Postal Dude but with a moral code and a character arc. I'm not saying that those 3 games are bad, just that if you're looking for more of Suda's style you should probably look elsewhere, like at The Silver Case, Flower Sun and Rain, Killer7, The 25th Ward, Travis Strikes Again, and NMH3 (not NMH2 though since just like KiD, SotD and LC, Suda took a backseat role for its development)

His ability to let go of what made him green and replace with something experienced but not bitter-all of this helped me as a young teen in my own life. I was always aware of the parody but never really started seeing the proof of it all. Having the beam katana or not wouldnt change his path, he would still be gung ho until he finds out that violence is expensive. But Travis takes it all in stride and under that weeb is a very Spike Speagal from Cowboy Bebop kinda man. A man who’s here in the now so firmly because his past gives him no other option and his absolution and steadfastness to win at life is the heart beat under all his bravado/hubris/weebness. Weeb or not, lightsaber or not, Travis was bound to take this path and he walks in with his head held high and a somewhat impervious innocence to the negativity of life while being able to be pervious enough to learn and mature/grow.

Those small breaks from the main gameplay are some of the most frustrating things about a lot of games to me, but people just say it like it's a well known fact. yeah, but that mainly applies to games that have exceptional gameplay, if I'm playing OG DOOM for instance I don't want any mini-games and distractions cuz shooting stuff is so fun and well-designed
but for NMH1 since the combat is very shallow it really needs those mini-games to help with the pacing, since NMH2 made it so you don't have to do the mini-games in order to beat the game which in the end made it a worse product since they didn't add any real complexity to the combat system to make up for this, making the entire game feel super repetitive as a result.
the only NMH games with genuinely good combat systems are TSA and especially NMH3, and are therefore the only NMH games that could really get away with being comprised of nothing but fighting stuff without it getting old

Like you said, a lot of its surface is fine enough for most. In fact, perhaps it's only because I've played many others like FSR or the Silver Case games that I've come back to NMH looking deeper. Hell, likely because of how Travis Strikes Again turned out, to be honest.
I don't want to get too into spoiler territory, and I don't know whether you've gone over any of the rest since this video, but I was a bit weary of TSA. It might not have impressed others so much, but it turned out to not only be fun in its own right but also an actual continuation of delving into Travis' character and what he has been doing all these years. I don't like to write off NMH2 like it's apparently cool to do now, but there is a bit less depth there, and it's not like anyone was waiting for it for a decade thinking the series may well be dead back then.
funny thing was, after how much TSA impressed me, I was actually worried about the inverse happening for the proper third game, thinking it may just well be a cardboard cutout of exactly what fans want rather than something that has new ideas worth exploring. There are some disappointments for sure with it, unfortunately probably more to do with budget constraints than anything else, but narratively I was again surprised at just how good it was. Even a bit confused at first at some parts, even if the on the surface it is again very simple, but rather discerning what deeper meaning there may be. Not even sure whether I'm done mulling over everything even now, I may just have to revisit it, but what I'm left with for now is thinking perhaps Travis did actually die at the end of the first game, and both the spinoff and this are dying dreams or if 3 is what paradise may be for him, or whether dying even really matters considering multiple characters and himself have returned.
Suda has said eventually there may be a 4th(5th?) game some years down the line, but I won't hold my breath. I'm elated we ever got more, and happy for what we've got considering hardships they've had over the years.

No More Heroes is definitely one of my favorite game series'. I love Travis, most of the enemy assassins are interesting, the soundtrack is always amazing and the gameplay is enjoyable enough, I find the over the top violence very satisfying. I know the games are jank but there's just something about these games that make them way better than the sum of their parts.

As a writer, I think No More Heroes is just a writing experiment. The genuinely deep character moments sprinkled into the off the wall fourth wall breaking madness strikes me as Suda 'becoming the characters', how they would actually act in these situations they're in and noting it's messed up and getting them nowhere, while on the other hand he is making it more and more absurd. I don't think its a critique of the hero fantasy so much as its a 'what if' of a guy ordering a katana and full blast jumping into it.
