    Very useful information, I wasn’t aware of the 200% sharpening issue. You are a source of really important information regarding the detail work critical to photography. Thanks so much for being such a patient and precise instructor. You have save me a lot of time and effort figuring out how to get the most out of digital photography software.

    I'm quite surprised a larger number of people haven't found you.... if they did, I know you'd have more subscribers! You touch on a lot of things that at least I didn't know how or WHY to do... Thanks!!!

      And therein lies the problem for eveyone on UA-cam. You need exposure from UA-cam and if I new how to do that I would be rich. Seriously though, I do this because I like to help people learn about photo editing. I do have to earn a living from my books and photography but it's still nice to do the videos.

    It is important to point out that sharpening will not transfer over to the develop persona if you are under 100%.You must be at 100% zoom for the effect to pass over,for some strange reason.Thanks for the lesson though Robin,keep the coming.

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  3 роки тому

      This can be true but the bug doesn't affect everyone. My sharpening works correctly when I clcik develop even when I'm not zoomed to 100%. Despite this, I have seen the problem you mention with other installations.

    Nice. tks. But how do this in a Batch process? To apply same settings to a bunch of files?

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  3 роки тому

      To automate an action you need to record it as a Macro and then play it back. The Macro recorder isn't available in the Develop Persona which this video relates to. For sharpening you would be best to apply a Live Filter in the Photo Person which you may be able to automate with the Macro recorder. You can then use the "New Batch Job" command in the File menu to execute the macro against a batch of files.

    Hi Robin and thanks for another good and clear video. I wanted to check with you that you’re recommending the sharpening in Develop Persona is applied last, after other adjustments in the persona have been made? Thanks again, Kirk

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks. No, I would only apply limited capture sharpening in the Develop Person at the start of editing. Any changes you apply in the Develop Persona become locked in to the image. It's better to apply limited Capture Sharpening at the start of the processing and apply a final round of Output sharpening using layers in the Photo Persona. Imight need to do a video about this to explain it.

    Very useful video, thanks! I've also noticed the sharpening "bug", although it actually appears to be the case that, with a RAW photo at "fit" zoom in Develop (i.e. a small percentage for a normal, hi-res photo), the photo seems to be displayed sharper than it actually is when you get to the Photo persona. If you zoom to 100% in Develop and then press develop, there is zero difference between the two personas when you get to Photo (you can see the photo stays exactly the same as Develop does its magic) *but* if you screenshot the photo at fit zoom in Develop and then in Photo, the Develop persona version (i.e. pre-develop) is clearly *much* more defined. No idea why. As you say, you need to zoom in to do the sharpening!

      Glad you liked the video and yes that sounds like the sharpening issue at work. Interestingly in early versions of the software, when I sharpen at 200% the sharpening would suddenly vanish from the Develop Person preview. Then when I went to the Photo Persona it was there. No idea if that still happens but hopefully they will sort this out at some point.

    Excellent presentation, thank you !
    You mention that if you're working in RAW (NEF) it's best tol start sharpening here, could you explain why ?

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  3 роки тому +1

      Sharpening the RAW file tends to produce better results than starting with a regular image file. The way the shapening works is different and more geared to RAW files with less chance of halos. You can then apply any other sharpening that's needed at the end fo your editing workflow.

    I have just started using Detail Refinement to sharpen my image. It works superbly BUT...when I develop the image, all the sharpening effect is lost when it opens in the Photo persona. I don't see the point of using Detail Refinement if you lose its effect as soon as you develop the image. How can I preserve the sharpening when the image is developed?

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  3 роки тому +2

      There is a bug that may be affecting you. Try having the magnification of your image set to 100% in the develop module when you click the Develop button. A lot of people report this is the only way they can retain the sharpening when the image is developed.

  • @abtexfatcatinatophat4520

    When I press develop, it seems to remove the sharpening. Very odd.

    • @RobinWhalley

      I've hear other people complain about that. Try setting the magnification to 100% and then click develop.

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  2 роки тому

      No, you probably aren;t missing anything. It depends a lot on what device you are watching the video on, at what resolution and the speed of your connnection. Whilst I can see a difference on my screen when I record the video, it will be difficult for you to see the same thing when streaming it on UA-cam. It's always best to follow/try out edits using your own copy of Affinity.
