  • Today we’re going through a full overview of the Portugal Golden Visa, as it currently stands at the time of recording in Autumn 2024 (Fall 2024 for our USA friends watching!)
Portugal’s Golden Visa is Europe’s #1 route to a second citizenship without having to move house or change your tax residence, and in today’s video we run through everything that you need to know. We’ll get started with an overview on the Golden Visa itself, what it is, why it’s so popular with those looking for a second passport and a dual nationality, and explain how it differs from the alternatives that are available in Europe.
Once we’ve compared Portugal to the other EU nations, we’ll then look at the Portugal Golden Visa versus the other visa options that exist in the country - and analyse whether the Golden Visa is indeed the right route for you. We’ll then dive into the practicalities - firstly, by looking at the process to expect for the Golden Visa, and then the process to expect to achieve citizenship later on. In our experience, most people embarking upon the Portugal Golden Visa are doing so in order to access the citizenship, so we’ll also spend a moment talking through the implications of Portuguese citizenship, and the benefits and options it brings you.
By this point we’ll know if Portugal is right for you, if the Golden Visa is right for you, and if dual citizenship should be the ultimate goal. We’ll then move onto the final detail of the piece, which is the investment the underpins the Golden Visa. We’ll break this into two parts: first, we'll examine the rules governing qualifying investments, and then talk briefly about the key considerations when it comes to selecting the right investment for you.
Today's video aims to give you a strong understanding of the Portugal Golden Visa, the possibilities it brings you and how to access it in the right way for you and your family’s future.

Great video Jonathan. Had a question. If i include my mother in the golden visa application, will she need to pass the language test too. She's 70. I had heard that parents over 60 are exempt from the language requirement. Wasn't sure. Cheers.

Portugalist cites the ordinance that states those over 60 "who also cannot read or write" are exempt from the language test. Not everyone over 60 is exempt. The language test is a requirement only for citizenship, not for the Visa. Also, A2 is a pretty easy level to reach, especially if one has five years to do so.

@@FrozenSkyy Kelly is correct; being over 60 does not exempt you from the language requirement. If an applicant is having difficulty with the CIPLE test, it may be worth pursuing the language course alternative.

@@FrozenSkyy if it’s helpful, we do run an in-house language course aimed at meeting this requirement. Drop me an email if you’d like further details on that.

It would be extremely difficult to prove sufficient ties if one has only spent the required seven days per year in Portugal; that's just a short annual vacation! The Golden Visa DOES NOT GUARANTEE citizenship. Staying in a hotel or Air BnB for a week each year isn't going to convince any Portuguese official to grant you citizenship. Good luck with that.

Hi Kelly, thanks for your comment. You are quite right that any GV applicants looking to transition to citizenship should be looking to demonstrate ties to the country. Our lawyers work with our clients to do just that, during the 5 years prior to the citizenship application. This can involve activities such as joining clubs linked to Portuguese culture, for example. We do a full review of this with our clients during our onboarding process.

@@jonathanralphcitizenship I figured you would cover it with clients, since you mentioned sufficient ties in your video. Many others do not, and their omission of that huge detail comes off as intentionally misleading. "Go where you're treated best" comes to mind!
