  • Dive into the mesmerizing world of weather phenomena with our step-by-step guide on creating a Mini Tornado at home!
In this exciting DIY experiment, we'll not only show you how to craft a mini tornado with everyday items but also enhance the experience with a captivating water vortex, bringing the magic of nature right into your living space. Our tutorial goes the extra mile by incorporating stunning Visual Effects (VFX) to elevate your Mini Tornado adventure!
Get ready for an adventure as we take science and fun to a whole new level! Learn how to harness the power of a water vortex to create a mesmerizing tornado effect. From simple household items to a jaw-dropping VFX display, this tutorial is perfect for science enthusiasts, curious minds, and anyone looking for a unique and visually stunning project.
All you need are a few common materials, a dash of creativity, and the desire to unleash the power of nature right in your own home.
Learn how to create a water vortex by drilling a hole at the bottom of plastic aquarium to act as a drain.
If don't have an aquarium just fill up your sink and then release drain plug. Stir in a circular motion and watch vortex form from above.
I highly recommend using a perfectly square tank. Any tank that has more of a rectangular shape will make it much more difficult to produce vortex.
Tank I recommend is the the Tetra 29095 Cube Aquarium Kit, 3-Gallon. Some of these shots were even captured with a cube tank that was only 1/2 gallon.

You forgot to use a long straw to make a more realistic tornado! Use food coloring, then extend the straw down to the bottom, and let the bottom debris swirl around the end of the tornado.

I'm guessing to make it look even more realistic, all you need to do is up the scale for a more realistic faximaly.

Always excited to watch your new videos!
Mr. Shanks, may I ask how you did the post-production works for your previous videos? E.g., Cloud tank & Dry ice comet?
I've recently started running a high school film club consisting of 25+ students. We have many beautiful shots but are still struggling to get the post-production work done. So I figured I should ask the person who inspired me to start this club, you, to perhaps guide us.
I hope this message gets to you, but til then, keep up the wonderful work :)

I feel like flipping the tornado element might have given it a more "Twister" effect to it, feel more destructive. Good work as always!!!

+Diego Chalita Thanks Diego, that is something I should have tried, even though tornado would have looks wider on bottom and thinner on the top. Wanted to shoot some ground elements with just dust spinning around the tank but was under the gun with deadlines to get this video done.

+Shanks FX Yeah, as a concept video, it is really great work!! It really sets the base for what can be done with this, and makes me less afraid of experimenting and writing in great stuff like tornadoes and other world-type locations (from your other videos) into my scripts knowing that these are things that can be done within a realistic budget. So, thank you!
