Cool information. Thankfully the winters here in the UK are still mild (while the Gulf Stream continues to work at least) and there are no requirements in law for specific tyres. Still, good to know what's available for winter specific requirements, as I'm planning to change their tyres on my Kawasaki Z1000SX soon. The current Metzeler Z8s have just started squaring off after 7,000+ miles (which I think is fairly decent going). I just got a set of Anlas Winter Grip + and they definitely have M+S on them and I think the little symbol, too. Where I live, in the Eastern Sierra Nevada of CA, it's the M+S that the cops look for.

I don't want to find out their real limits due to the way in which that would come about. I'm really glad to have them. I'm not riding during storm cycles, although tempted. Once the roads are mostly clear, I'm good. For a while, the temps were in the single digits F at night and I get off work at 12:30am. Day temps were in the 30s. Even on dry pavement, at those temps, I didn't like using my summer tires, which were worn out. We've gotten about 8 feet of snow in the last few weeks and it's now warmed up to more seasonal temps. High teens to 20s at night and high 30s to low 50s during the day. There's almost always a tire track through ice patches, but the ice is usually somewhat dirty, anyways and I feel fine riding straight across it or just leaning my body over to keep my bike (2022 Street Scrambler) upright while turning corners. My town is only four square mile, so I know each day what all the roads are like. The only thing I'm extra concerned with is black ice and the really hard polished snow, like where people spin out over in their cars. I'm at 8,000' and at some point will ride down to the next town over, which is only 4,000'. That'll give me a chance to feel the tires in warmer temps. I want to keep the wear down, though.
Man we had such a big snow dump on the westcoast that I am not able to ride! Though even with winter moto tires, I don't think I would dare to go out there with my iron because I am too scared if there are any damages to the bike, the HD dealership would rob me and make me wait 3 to 6 months for parts LOL. I am now driving for about 10 years in snow, and as far that i can tell - as Long as you dont lean in and ignore your front break and dont go over 30 kmh / 23 mph you will made it. I am driving heavy bikes, like the GS oder KTM SAS, useing the Karroo 3.
I suspect companies have to pay for the testing and if they don't sell enough volume for the break even point to make sense, they maybe don't bother. Just a theory.
We always ran the creeks(frozen) in the winter on our bikes. We'd insert sheet metal screws and grind a "V" in the top slot. Snowmobiles could not stay with us and wheelies were commonplace. You could also run trial universal tires and slice the knobs with a razor blade, providing great winter traction.
I ride my scooter ay -30 c here in Toronto . gonna put some suds on my off road tires this year. Now that its cold my scooter can only go 90 kph max though
there is also Petroshina L-333M - same wiggly grooves, excellent performance on snow and ice, tested at 100kmh in -25C 😅 the main downside - it's 18" only

That's crazy that the Heidenau tires aren't qualified to be water tires. Where I live the winters are mild so there's no requirement to switch over to a snow tires, but then I tend to not ride once the temperatures drop below freezing, or they start putting salt on the roads.
Could be that they failed the test. Could just be that their market for that tire is so small in North America that it doesn't make it worth trying to even pass the test in the first place. Not sure. Maybe I will reach out to them and see if I can get a comment from them
Toronto Canada is pretty bad too. I usually have a little scooter I picked up for $1,000... I don't mind if it gets a little salty because... it will never sell for less than that... i don't want my nice bikes to get all salty either. no good! haha
Didn't really need a video to say "yes they exist, but they don't necessarily perform to the point of being classified as an official winter tire." That being said, good on at least answering it, since only searches aren't great and more of turn up knobbies with screws/spikes added to them for just screwing around off road. I run the Heidenau K66s on my Silverwing and no issues yet; that's all I saw in Berlin last month on the rental schools at every street corner as well. Had them in some light Rockies powder this year with no issues yet, but obviously you'll want to be particularly cautious doing 2-wheel winter riding. Can't comment on the wear & tear piece, but I don't really have an expectation for winter bike tires to last 10k+ miles without serious erosion of tread regardless.

That's a really interesting question. You'd get the two main issues with darksiding: poorer handling, and the fact that the car tire beads and motorcycle tire beads are made differently so you have a little more risk of your tire spontaneously uninstalling itself... You'd also need to keep in mind that while the surface contact patch is bigger, the compounds will be different. A motorcycle tire will have a lot more silica since it needs to really stick to the road. Car tires are typically made with much less... but then again, maybe snow tires would be made to be stickier at lower speeds... Hmm... It's not the worst idea. Your question is actually really interesting. Try it out and let us know! :)
Oouff, that's going to be a hard one. snowmobile gear for starters, and no carbureted bikes. On really cold days sometimes carbureted bikes will freeze and shut down completely. I once had to leave my scooter downtown over night because it just could not stay alive long enough to get me home from campus.
You could put studs in anything I guess, but then what? Unless you're going through actual snow or frozen slush, I don't know how much that's going to help. If you're going through the city just commuting over the winter, the roads are clear, but the temperatures are below freezing, so I'd prefer good traction.
@@TechnMoto Nice. Been riding year round since 2007, today included. It started out of necessity because I started riding as a broke teenager with no car or even a car license. Now I just do it for fun. Good to clear the head and keeps you sharp on the bike. No winter-rust to shake off in the spring time. Life is good :)

Hey there, in one of your other videos I noticed the area (mt pleasant) I have a Yamaha fz6r and I've been starting it all winter and it's been starting up no problem but today it started but sounded so off, like deeper , rumbling sound then it shut off. And now it won't start. I'm going to see if the air filter is clogged from something making a home, and checking fuel lines. Anything else you think that may cause this sudden problem ?? Thanks so much !

@@fartashe.5722 You're doing the opposite of what you think you're doing by starting it. A motorcycle battery won't recharge just from idling. It needs to be at high revs for a long period of time. You're better off not starting it all winter, than starting it and not riding it. If I had to guess, I would assume your battery is flat, but the next time you try to start it, it might recover a bit and possibly start and eventually die again. Just a shot and a dark guess based on the description. Take the battery out, bring it in your condo, put it on a trickle charger.

You're always going to be limited by having only two tiny contact patches with the road, but different tire compounds and treads always make a difference.
I always learn something new from your vids. As for cold weather riding, I won't go out if its below 50F (10C).

Eastern Sierra Nevada. In summer, I can go from 4,000' to 10,000' in about 45 minutes. Some of the best roads anywhere.

In Scandinavia it gets so cold bikes rarely come out winter time so we avoid rust and salt damage 😊

Yeah. Nothing new. I started riding 15+ years ago and that was already the case then and hasn't changed since. Call your french friends and ask them.
With these Anlas tires yes you can. Must have 3pms for road usage!
