I don't know who Patrick Willems is, but I think he should remake Sheflock and Waffson, using all the insight he has gained since the original was released.
Describing Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino’s fans idea of a good movie being “smearing your influences over every frame like a toddler fingerprinting” might be the best thing Patrick’s ever said
RedMageUltra Then you should definitely never watch the full length remake of Raiders by those kids in the 80’s. Pat and his buddies were MUCH safer than those kids.
The fact that Patrick roasted his own film for 10 straight minutes only to literally drop that shit immediately when he saw the Matrix 4 news is amazing and I loved it.
That musical stinger from Kill Bill is a layered reference because Tarantino lifted it straight from Ironside, a 60s/70s TV show about a paralyzed detective.
This reminds me to the first movie I made with my friends. We filmed it from 2006 to 2011. It was a continuity disaster, but we love it. Btw, the terminator run crack me, thanks Patrick
You legit inspire me man, honestly, my films are so dumb and unmarketable, I then look at how far you’ve come and realise that I can also become successful like you so thank you so much for making this
I really like that you're not too hard on your younger self. It can be embarrassing to look back on old works when you've come so far, but you should be proud of that younger you and what he accomplished!
I’d like to see your movie remade because I really respect the concept. It seems like it’d be super cool :) I think the absurdity of it could play well in animation but I’m actually a huge animation fan so I’m somewhat biased.
wow what a stellar nugget in the middle of the video not hinted at in the title or thumbnail, but placed there for the real fans who wanted to watch everything about your high school film
What the actual heck Patrick, you just gonna leave us hanging with that line about never speaking to your close friend again with NO explanation!! *film making!!*
Liked how the analysis of your early film tied in with the sponsor, while the reaction to the 4th Matrix film news fits that series theme of nesting dolls reality.
I am just 16 about to be 17 and I am happy your essays have helped me improve my craft and helped be express my creativity so thanks this seemed like the perfect time to express my feelings
From what I recall, there always was supposed to be a fourth Matrix movie, and that Reloaded and Revolutions were originally one movie together that the Wachowskis said as they were finishing up "Reloaded" that they had to split in two. However, the poor reception of Revolutions caused Warner Bros. to basically go "Well, you made the three movies we contracted. Go away now." Since the Wachowskis have been rather consistent with their quality since then, I actually have high hopes for this one. My thought? That they'll learn the Man/Machine War isn't what really darkened the sky and that this whole "Free Your Mind" situation has been engineered to occupy the humans while the machines struggle to fix the Earth's environment. I mean, that's always been the one detail that really stood out to me, that Humanity "darkened the sky" in an effort to hinder the Machines, which the Animatrix showed were already using fusion engines in their flying vehicles. So, the supposition that the Machines were using solar power and would be hindered by the sun being blotted out always seemed like exceptionally poor military intelligence on behalf of the humans, making for a very flimsy cover story. Since the Matrix is heavily influenced by anime and anime tropes, this would be the point where the series goes VERY cerebral... It just might do a better job of conveying its message rather than the usual "I put everybody through Hell because I have personal issues I haven't dealt with in my life..." approach that various anime cartoons use. Then again, it could go that route, too, with the whole Matrix turning out to be Neo's personal power trip, where he cycles humanity through war after war just to play out his own personal power fantasies... Man... How depressing would THAT be!?
Roland Grey Yeah, but Reloaded already did the free your mind was an illusion all along twist. I always kind of read that twist as a sort of meta commentary on the popularity of the first Matrix movie. Like, if your anti-establishment film is beloved by those who reinforce the establishment, can you really consider it effective no matter how undeniably cool it is?
@@ryat66 I liked it. What’s funny is that they do touch on the stuff Patrick says here but they also take it in the exact opposite direction (in a good way). My only real complaint is that I wished they had done more with the supporting characters. They’re all a lot of fun and played by really good actors but we don’t get a lot of time to flesh them out.
When I first saw the news about the Matrix 4 I was like "meh" until I saw that David Mitchell was involved and then I was like SHUT UP AND TAKE ALL MY MONEY. The novel Cloud Atlas is my favorite book ever. Utter masterpiece.
You got me. I genuinely thought this video was all going to be about your movie, and I was getting ready for some kind of philosophical conclusion about how you have to actually make movies (instead of just watching them) to properly learn the craft - but then your cellphone rang. It's very exciting that there's going to be a Matrix 4, but I'm going to try and keep my expectations to a minimum, at least until learning more about the movie. Right now it's like an unexpected birthday present from an uncle (or aunt) who was lost in the jungle years before. It's intriguing and great that they're still around and I have no idea what it could possibly be, and that's okay.
Don Davis is a GOD this movie is gonna be so amazing, I am in full fanboy mode, even though that's usually never me when it comes to reboots and sequels!
Thinking about the Matrix sequel this is the first thing to come to mind: -Freedom has failed, society, as predicted by Agent Smith can't handle freedom and the liberated version of the matrix failed spectacularly, more like imploded. One generation later and we're in a new hellscape matrix which is dense, tall, brick builds all congealed together---like Kowloon Walled City. One of the things we see in the start of the film is the young Indian girl from The Matrix Reloaded, grown-up. Following in her father's path she's rejected her designation and function and managed to survive the resetting of the matrix as a vigilante, liberating other programs. As, like the architect said, Neo is the answer to an unbalanced equation. Hence, there is a Neo in this version (hence Keanu Reeves' involvement), as such, there is also a Trinity and a Morpheus. Because, in order to keep the programs/minds working these people must exist, to inspire hope. We see the little girl turned vigilante dressed in a hooded long-sleeved black dress, black leggings and a dark purple mask covering her face from the bridge of her nose down, following Neo and his team whenever they enter the Matrix. That's as far as I got.
I wonder, if we knew it at the time, would it have taken off? Or even had enough of a budget to do what they did? I'm genuinely wondering, as I'm too young to have experienced the culture at the time
The original draft originally did have Switch serve as a transgender allegory (she was going to be male outside the Matrix but female inside the Matrix since that was how she saw herself), but WB insisted they remove it which explains why everyone on the team seems to have some larger role to play besides Switch who’s just kind of there and then dies. If that level of representational gatekeeping was in place during production, I can’t even imagine what would happen if it went out to a large mainstream audience. Hell, the year Brokeback Mountain came out, a lot of the older Academy members refused to even watch it due to the LGBT politics.
Completely off-topic, but I love trying to pick out recognizable stuff on your bookshelf each video. Uzumaki, Essex County, Invincible, Bone. Great taste, dude.
I always wish to see a director analyze their own film. All the questions that critics have to guess about are definitively answered by the person who actually made it.
Guessing the next matrix will be a play on the fact that humans always want more, and while there was an agreement with machines we'll always try to beat them.
I know half of this was a Matrix 4 vid but if this isn't hinting at Patrick doing a full-length remake of Sheflock and Waffson I'm gonna be severely disappointed
My own 8mm short in my teens: A guy steals heroin kept in my bathroom, I hear noises and investigate and find the bathroom empty, the thief hid in the dryer. He is about to escape but I block his exit so he jumps out the window forgetting we are on the 4th floor. He hits the ground a little dizzy from the hit yet walks away. Sponsored by Zits crackers.
Our friend group made a micro budget film about a guy poisoning water to turn everyone into vampires, because he could mind controlll vampires and wanted an army. It was based around the boardgame "Risk" as a central theme. I played every nameless henchman and nameless cop in ever scene. During the police raid there's scene where I shoot then it cuts to a reverse shot, and I shot myself as a henchman. The only difference in costume was that I was missing my police hat as a henchman. Probably our best gag.
Also, I once fantasized about a continuation of The Matrix as an animated series that takes place in 3001, and Neo and Trinity were police agents in Zion City (which obvs became a shiny utopia in the years since). Also also, I can't believe a 4th Matrix movie is happening, I thought that Morpheus prequel was gonna be a thing, but now here we are.
The thing that I'm dying to know is what is the 20's Matrix equivalent to the 90's Matrix counterculture trends? There are going to be goths in this? A new Marilyn Mason song? The first half of the video was an interesting insight into the author's teenage psyche followed by an interesting insight into the author's grownup, teenage psyche. What the video lacks is some link between these two to show the author's growth of lack thereof.

So true
thank you, i agree
Yeah, but it's just one of those awkward phases you kind of have to pass through and outgrow in your own time. Like Nu Metal or japanese card games.
WHY WERE YOU USING REAL METAL SWORDS?!? THIS FACT MADE MY ENTIRE BODY STIFF WHEN YOU MENTIONED IT!
RedMageUltra Then you should definitely never watch the full length remake of Raiders by those kids in the 80’s. Pat and his buddies were MUCH safer than those kids.
I know, those crazy kids!
That knife throw gag is so fucking good though. I’m still not over it.
The juxtaposition from a video about your first movie to a video about a new Matrix movie gave me whiplash!
A "Rewriting the Sheflok and Waffson Sequels" would be cool.
This man could’ve easily made this into two videos with twice the monetization but he has tegrity. 10/10
My dude! you nailed the Tom Cruise SIgnature Run 09:00 have you been practicing?
New title: Patrick Willems roasting his own film for 10 minutes straight.
Brb, I'm going to make a "TOP 20 THINGS YOU MISSED" video about your movie
Patrick’s humble beginnings start off innocently enough wi -- “Matrix 4 confirmed” -- HARD LEFT!!!
'I thought he'd be older in 2005,' I think to myself, forgetting that I was seven at that time
How DARE you be younger than me!
Its a weird phenomena that so many people still feel like the early/mid 2000s were only 5 years ago... when its over double that.
I was less then a year old.
PATRICK. That was the perfect setup for a cliffhanger ending and you could have made this two videos! Work smarter not harder.
The fact that Patrick roasted his own film for 10 straight minutes only to literally drop that shit immediately when he saw the Matrix 4 news is amazing and I loved it.
They had us in the first half, I'm not gonna lie.
Patrick really falling on the SEO sword putting his Matrix take inside a different video.
he's trying to see where his true fans are at!
What a brilliant and weird choice though.
Mrs. Willems’ closing narration is so good :)
I'm 100% convinced that Hideo Kojima watched this movie and decided he found the new, definitive look for Master Miller.
THAT TOOK A SHARP LEFT TURN
That musical stinger from Kill Bill is a layered reference because Tarantino lifted it straight from Ironside, a 60s/70s TV show about a paralyzed detective.

The “fear of getting old” of Sheflok and Waffson is something I can definitely relate to. Thanks Patrick!

This video is like a metatext of all the film-making references from the podcast.
Fun to watch people talk about their old stuff as if that was a totally seperate person.
I love the fact that 'Death of the Author & all that' is just a phrase that can be used & you can feel pretty confident your audience understood it.
The music from "Kill: Bill" is actually from the TV series "Ironside." I'm sure you know that, though.
Your music choices are killing me 💙 Esp FF7 and MGS2
The twist in the midddle of the vídeo was really nice
That Matrix 4 headline popping up was the biggest left turn in video essay history
