    Your content is very well presented in this video. I'm a speech therapist and 100% agree with your recommendations. You are a joy to watch! I myself have a 5 month old and a 26 month old, so I'm relating to all your content. Thank you for making videos like this one to promote language development.

    I actually noticed that YOU have a great vocabulary.. when you are explaining things in videos or vlogs you use great words when explaining ordinary things and when you’re just talking conversationally. Since she’s hearing you talk all the time it makes total sense that she uses great vocabulary too! Love it. I think that parents expanding their own learning and conversational vocabulary can go a long way in helping their kids!

    I talked to my baby all the time. I would describe everything to her since birth. It just came naturally to me and I always used real words like I would use with an adult. She made her first sentence at 19 months and at 22 months she made a story of 6 lines and narrated it to me. It's amazing how easily she can pick up difficult words too. I love talking to my baby.

    Both my boys didn't talk well until close to 2 and it was always stressful as a mom, but they're both great at talking now. It was important for me to have patience with them. They did it when they were ready, but I still encouraged them with positive reinforcement.

    When my son was a tiny baby I would read my books out loud to him, speak my thoughts outloud and look at him while I talked to other people on the phone. It made those non-verbal, sedentary months much more fun for both of us.

I discovered you through Instagram and watched all your videos from the start, like 2 or 3 a day, and now that I catch up its been difficult to wait for the new video... It shows such little respect for the child. I hope the parents who need to hear this, do & take it to heart. ❣️

    As far as baby talk, it's important to use real words, like you were saying, but using that exaggerated tone helps the baby figure out the natural prosody, or rhythm, of their language. Babies stop liking this as much at around 8-10 months old.

      How interesting!
      That's what I was told by a linguistics professor as well.
      Apparently the exaggerated enunciation/ intonation speeds up language acquisition?
      I didn't know this becomes less interesting to babies once they hit a certain age though.

    Soooo true on not dumbing things down. My son uses the language I use with him,even bigger, more specific words. I just explain bigger words with synonyms or breaking things down when introducing new words like you mentioned.
    So right! And don't repeat the wrong words back to your kid the way they say it. Remember, we are their models.

Also, about 2 days ago I watched the video where you talked about how a crazy squirrel tried to steal food from you when you were in college. I laughed because it reminded me of the squirrels at UF. Then, today when I was watching your older videos, I watched the q&a where you and Mike answered questions and I found out that you both are Gators! What a coincidence! Thank you in particular for telling parents how important it is for them to repeat back to their children the correct words for things. So, if a child asks for their cup of milk and it's a glass of milk, hand it to them and say, "Here is your glass of milk." Not acting like you don't know what they mean or that it was terrible that they got the vessel name wrong. Just to reinforce the correct words for things as you go.

    None of my children were very verbal. My oldest has autism so that’s self explanatory. Now he is very verbal that he has moved up the spectrum. My 5 year old was speech delayed and now he has a speech impediment but he does therapy and helps him a lot. My 2 year old is the same thing as my 5 year old but she does have enlarged tonsils that touch and enlarged adenoids I definitely hear her say words but she has an impediment as well. My baby makes coo and wa sounds so this advice was great I hope one of my children come out verbal early but I love this video and advice. I will definitely try this.

    Totally agree! Our mother language is Mandarin, but we read English book or watch English TV program sometime so my 2-year-old boy can say some simple animal names in English, like "bear", "monkey". One day I told him the name of the book "the very hungry caterpillar" and he tried to repeat the whole sentence too. It's not easy for him to say this as a sound language. And the other day he pointed the book and said "caterpillar" instead of the Chinese word. So we don't need to only teach them simple words on purpose, assumed they can't learn difficult word at this time. They can absorb long sentence as well as short words.

(Of course we make sure they are the good ones) but yeah, she definitely learned a lot from it. So maybe instead of saying "it doesn't work that way", just say it doesn't work "most of the time", because my baby definitely learned lots of words from it and identify objects because she sees them in her cartoons. :)

    I would LOVE to see a video on using Baby Sign Language (though, I prefer to use real ASL signs instead of modified baby signs when possible. True, a baby or toddler may not have the finger dexterity to do all of the signs "correctly" but it's no different than a toddler not properly saying certain letter sounds when talking. Your baby might start off signing "water" with a closed fist, then and open palm before moving on to doing the "W" handshape; just like s/he may start off with "wawa" and then move on to "wa-er" before finally being able to say "water." Since ASL is a language, it can and should be treated in the same way as English or another spoken language).
    I also love the idea of reading to newborns and young infants. Yes, repetitiveness is important for language development, but I also think parents and caregivers (I babysit and have worked in daycares which is why I love your channel) should embrace those months where you can read what YOU want to read before you have a toddler begging to hear the same story for the millionth time.
    And the first thing I thought of when it comes to using the real names for items was Kylie knowing the actual types of triangles (vocabulary I honestly forgot about because I never use it).

    • @anakapur6688
      @anakapur6688 4 роки тому

      Yes, I remember the isosceles example so clearly too.. that had amazed me.
      Ashley, on sign language - a Qs I had was, which words did you find most useful for Kylie having learnt. I don't plan to teach my baby many sign language words, but if I know the "5-7 most helpful to know" then I can focus on those.
      Right now my 14mo knows food and done. And we've found just those two being super useful.

    • @pnhnut
      @pnhnut 4 роки тому

      I am also interested in knowing more about the pitfalls and benefits of using early sign language in hearing children. For instance my two year old who is totally verbal and hearing, refuses to use the word "more" but will only sign for more and if you ignore it or tell her no, no more she gets more animated with the signing and now uses a "MMM" sound over and over and over and it is so annoying haha, but the bigger problem is that I am afraid that I am finding she is doing this more frequently with other words now too like help..so she will be crying over a frustration and rather than use the word help, she is over in the play room signing for help over and over again while crying. I was warned by our caseworker (this is a foster child in our care since infancy) that this is why they do not recommend signing in hearing toddlers. Thoughts?

    • @LissaxKristine
      @LissaxKristine 4 роки тому +1

      @@pnhnut Honestly, that sounds like normal two-year-old behavior to me. Toddlers like to be defiant and resist authority. It's not unusual for a toddler to do the exact opposite of what you want them to do because they're testing boundaries and/or trying to find control over their own lives.
      Obviously, I'm not an expert, but what you're describing sounds more like an "issue" with your daughter being defiant and wanting control and LESS of something directly related to ASL. ASL is actually GREAT for hearing children because those motor skills usually develop faster than oral skills. This means that a child may know what s/he wants or needs and can communicate despite not having the word. This leads to fewer tantrums and less frustration on both sides of the conversation. Plus, being frustrated over a lack of being able to communicate can actually lead to more stress and a more difficult time communicating. (Just like how as an adult, being frustrated over not being able to pick out a word can actually make it harder to remember the word).
      Instead of fighting, try ignoring the fact that she's using ASL as a way to communicate and accept it. She signs "more," and you respond simply "Oh, do you want more crackers?" [Maybe throw in a gentle reminder in regards to using manners and saying "please"... whether she signs it or says it vocally, acknowledge it in the same way]. When you ignore it entirely, you have a child who becomes desperate for attention. When you fight her on it, she's likely to fight back. At the end of the day, ASL is a language and she is communicating. That is the most important part.
      I have a friend whose 4 year old will go through phases of wanting to sign everything instead of speaking (and she's always been a chatterbox). If she does't know a sign, she'll make one up. When that happens, my friend just treats it like it's normal because it's not worth the argument. (Though, when it comes to made-up signs, she DOES occasionally tell her daughter "I don't understand what you are saying. You need to tell me using your words.")

    People always notice my 4 year olds vocabulary & conversational skills also. I have done all the things you suggested & I always tell people the same I just talk to her like a person lol & no baby talk as in only real words, of course I do speak in a very overly descriptive, overly enunciated, animated way. Omg & yes we did sign language from about 9 months old too. Plus I would read to her from birth her own books, my books, longer children’s & contemporary classics, magazine articles, online random articles on anything science, health, food, psychology, baby development just everything. Now that she’s older though she has a shorter attention span for being read to, so we’re taking a break from long books & mostly read books that can be read in 1 sitting. I do even keep reading as she runs around & plays & most of the day as I’m doing all the housework we have audiobooks running anyway.

    Thankyou for the video. As a parent of a child with a neurocognitive disorder, it would be good to mention this subject as around 15% children (at least in my country) have varying degrees of disorders. Did you have experience with special needs kids as a teacher? I wish that I would've used sign language since my child was a baby and a video on it would be great😊

    Hi Ashley, Thank you for these videos I have always found inspiration and ideas from them. Have a question though.. What is the montessori approach to introducing multiple languages.. We speak different languages at home including english, please share your thoughts on this..

    I'm new to the channel, so I'm not sure where grandparents stand with your family... but I was wondering (if this applies to your family or any of the viewers) how you could get the grandparents on board with the ways of montessori?

    So.. M is pretty good with speech, but I still came to this video, because well - Ashley puts out a video, I will eventually watch it!
    But my key takeaway - consider getting an actual vegetable scrubber rather than the dollar store toothbrush (that I use exclusively for veggies)!

    I would love to see you actually reading to your little one in a video. Maybe you could film it one day? My baby is now 10 months old and I have been trying many times, but he does not like being read to or looking at books. I have books with rhymes, soft books, books that make noise, books with babies, with flaps... he chews on them and that’s it. I guess at some point the interest will come, any suggestions?

    my toddler is 1,5 years, we re reading and practicing language a lot just like you said. She understands most of the words around the house, animals and things from our books and can point on them when asked for. However, for most of the things she has only noises (animals) or no words yet. she is amazinlgy good in expressing her will and needs and I also really know her well so we make up a good team understanding wise. So I am wondering if she maybe can get too comfortable without feeling the need to learn speaking? for her reach level 3 , would it be better to "less understand" her nonverbally ? or would that lead to to big frustration and even threaten or harm our bond ?

    Great video. Any experience from multilingual parents? In my household we speak 3 languages, My 16 months old daughter goes to daycare so she is exposed to English longer. But when home, we speak French and berber(african dialect), We were raised to speak them mixed up so I cant stick to one language like I was told to by her pediatrician. This worry me, so far she seems to understand basic sentences and object names. But I am worried for the long run.

Is it still beneficial if she doesn’t pay much attention and doesn’t really look at me while I’m reading? When did your girls start to pay more attention to the books you were reading?

      @Terri Mccallum Wow~ Thanks for your comments for all the details~ I do explain a lot of things to my 2 year old. I do agree repeat something around her is helpful for her languages. But I don't know how much I should do, because I don't want to interrupt her when she is really deep thinking or playing something... Montessori is letting the baby be the boss and we support... But Seems like language part is a little bit confusing about that...

    How does your husband do with all of this? Does he have a hard time doing every little thing it takes to have this style of parenting? Is he on the same page as you like reading the Montessori books etc.?
    I know my husband is on board with Montessori for our son but he doesn’t do as much research. Instead of researching he sort of comes to me for knowledge on it lol. It’s fine for me because he does well with me relaying the things I learn but I’m wondering if it’s more helpful that he really buckle down and research.

Sine they live in another state we only see them like 4-5 times a year. Not sure if that is going to affect baby learning or not? If I were to talk to his family, they are very easily offended if you say things so I worry it would also make them angry to correct them. Thanks in advanced!

It was very interesting to hear the child's language development and it was also funny to hear how the child tries to say the word water. It was the dad who had been filming it all for thousands of hours since his child started saying it

    Hi Ashley, Lisa here. Thanks for your helpful sharing. However, I do encounter a issue now and need your expertise to help me. Me and my husband are both Chinese and Chinese are our mother tongue. But we moved to Singapore for years where we both speak English as working language. After I gave birth to my son, I have been used the OPOL method which I speak English and my husband speaks Chinese. My son is now 16mth old but I found my husband didn't spent a lot of time with my son as I do. As a result, my son now understand most of the daily terms in English but don't understand Chinese. In this case, when I speak to my son, shall I switch to Chinese? Will it makes him confused or cause him with a self-esteem problem? Or do you have other suggestions that help my son to learn Chinese as a mother tongue?

    • @zoelemenestrel7853

      It definitely doesn't! I'm an elementary teacher and teaching your child more than one language will be super beneficial to them in the long run - there are many studies that show that bilingual children do better in school and it is great for brain development. You may notice a period where your child mixes up words of both languages and lags a little bit developmentally, but this is totally normal and will pass with time. Continue supporting language development with your child by reading books aloud in both languages and otherwise promoting lots of access to oral and written language. Best of luck!

    This is awesome! I've been doing this with my son (he's 6 months old). I know studies show that babies/ children (up to a certain age that I don't remember) are most primed for learning multiple languages. I have a multi-langual household, but now that I have a kid, I realized I don't know how to implement his learning of each language.
    Should I have days where I only speak to him in a specific language? Or should I say the same thing multiple times (once in each language)? Or should I only speak what will be the primary language in the household, and trust that he'll learn English from interacting in the world (my nieces/nephews learned English when they started school)?
    Any tips from anyone who knows would be great!

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori 3 роки тому +1

      I know this is late, but to answer your question, that final option is best. If you live in an English speaking country, your child will pick it up no problem. English is quite a bit simpler to pick up than a lot of other languages that we may be introducing to our child. The best way to introduce your language is to be consistent with it. We speak Russian (me) and Korean (my husband) at home, and that is how we have sit it up. He speaks his language, I speak mine, and between the two of us we strive for Korean because our daughter is exposed to it less (she sees my parents, who also speak Russian). She will have a chance to pick up English naturally from school, us talking on the phone, going to stores, etc.
      We spoke only Russian in my family when my brother was born, and he entered Montessori with zero English. In a matter of months, he was perfectly fluent in it!
