2022 Peugeot 508 PSE - A Different Kind of Fast Estate

- In this video, I'm driving the most powerful Peugeot ever made, the 355bhp 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered. Currently the only Peugeot Sport offering in the lineup, does this car have what it takes to stand out in a crowd of competent hot estates?

We need more good looking estates like this. Let the SUV craze die down already!
Absolutely love these things, peugeots current styling is really doing it for me.
I just love this french car. It's so beautiful. And I have a V6 VW Passat, but I would like to swap just to this one
Have you got a mullet hair style as well
Too much estrogen in your system.
I wish Peugeot would get back to building proper GTi cars again. I had 205 GTi (1.6 then 1.9), a 208 GTi, and a 308 GTI. The latter was decent, the others were fantastic. Would love a hot version of the new 208.
Spent 10 days with the regular petrol 508 GT as a courtesy car and can confirm it is a lovely thing. 225bhp, 8 speed auto and all the toys (including nappa leather seats). It steered nicely and rode beautifully, feeling firm yet compliant and very stable. At around £25k less, I think it’s a much better bet, although I saw a PSE on the road the other day and it was an event! Buy one second hand for pennies and have a super-rare left-field future classic.
Real car talk not zooming round a race track at 200 mph like Top Gear thank God 🙏
Great comment
The 508 is a great looking car, much more interesting than the German alternatives
Its actually rubish
how to say you know fuck all about cars without actually saying it .
well done
Agreed
@snbala Yep, I would love to meet someone who buys a Passat or some other German yawn box over this
the 508 is one of my favorite peugeots in recent years. They really nailed it before the PSE and now with it its a really tempting car if i had more money.
i would like to point out that the top engine in the jag is now the 300hp 2l petrol engine. They refreshed it recently but i struggle to figure out why they did not shove in the new straight six. i saw figures of over 500hp come by when fitted to a range rover
Nobody can accuse you of being one track minded!
I had a 508SW for a while. The 180hp petrol. Fabulous car. Much much much better build quality than the VW Touareg that replaced it.
Peugeots current design language is beautiful
I really, really like this car (its gorgeous to look at, the interior is cool looking and its just interesting compared to the Germans) but I can see no reason to buy it over an M340i, the Beamer sounds better, has a much better engine, probably a higher quality feel overall, is faster and costs near enough the same. Unless the BMW costs to much to run, its hard to justify the Peugeot (on paper at least)!
It's true. When you drive a 340i, at least you're not driving a Peugeot. But unfortunately you're still gonna have to drive a BMW.
@@JayMaverick how’s that unfortunate?
The 508 seems great but you also have to factor in the (likely) low resale value down the line
You buy it because it's different.
Plus with the BMW your neighbours will think you're a better human being.
My dad has had his PSE about a month now and he absolutely loves it
I've never been much a fan of station wagons but this car is beautiful. Love the dark grey too!
With that being said though, the looks of this car may be all that I like about it. 20 inch wheels with low profile tires look nice but they're a money pit & they really hamper a comfortable suspension. Powertrain is nothing that would interest me. Interior seems lackluster. Far too expensive. Etc.
Good lord that looks great. The proportions are perfect.
I have been an avid Peugeot fan like yourself since we had a 306 from new. It was just so good. I loved the 206, 406 and the 407. I really want this to be really good. Like you say. Support the underdog. 🙂
You set a very low bar
Great video! Such a beautiful estate.
Loads of these in France and Spain and they look stunning on the road.
I cant believe how good it looks. Holy cow, its amazing
Hi james, look for a 308 GTi 270 - for the small car you were looking for - old shape pre 2022. For the Rev counter use the DIALS setting which has a traditional rev counter on the right. Yes the fuel tank is a bit of a pain, but only for a high mileage driver
Really interesting and insightful review. Thank you :)
Great looking car, personally I like the colour (though I wonder how well it will age). Seems to almost have everything, shame about the drawbacks, but still worth a look. I have seen one exactly like this once, and it looked genuinely outstanding, a real head turner.
I am extremely surprised I LOVE the sound of it 😳
Peugeot have really nailed the cockpit over the last few years, and their designs are excellent. But you are right about the drivetrain, it just is not one thing or another. The need to look at how their French rivals are working wonders with the hybrid system. The Clio e-tech I hired in France is excellent. Utterly seamless in power delivery and transfer between electric and ICE, and 60mpg to boot.
Love the look of this, beautiful shape to it
Really good review more like this please
saw one of these EXACTLY like this when i went to arran couple days ago, looked absolutely brilliant
Eternal shiny and chrome.
Probably the nicest peugeot that
Just seen one on the road the other day, never drooled over a estate in a long long time
Such a good looking car with a surprisingly nice stance
Nice looking Car!!
I'm not into hybrid especially plug ins, I wish it had 355HP with a 1.8 or 2L petrol engine and it had a manual option too. I also love big fuel tanks like the peugot 406, I think it's nearly at 80L because a full tank gets me return trips for some long journeys like Nairobi to Mombasa and back or Nairobi to Eldoret and back. These are easily 800-1200km journeys.
Just taken delivery of rhe SW fior my new company car. Here in UK the BIK tax makes this a good option. Half the tax of my old Arteon and about a third of tax compared to S4 or 340i. The Selenium grey has so.e metallic in it. I really like the colour appears to change as the day goes on. I'm getting over 400 miles on full tank. Need to use the esave and Sat Nav to ensure everything is optimised. I couldn't be happier. Car is a real head Turner. Only 150 in the UK and that's fastback and SW so very rare sight. Great on long journeys but rapid point to point when you need it
As a car collector with many performance French cars among others I really wanted it to be good, love the way it looks and the fact Peugeot had the balls to make it. I think in 5 years it will make sense price wise to get one. Until then I will enjoy the likes of my RCZ R or 306 maxi ex world rally car!
Performance andFrench are words that should never be in the same sentence
@@Storm.Z.4u I beg to differ. I have an ex works 306 maxi in my collection it would destroy most road cars with its performance! The French built some of the best hot hatches too with great performance and drive ability. I even have a remapped French diesel that’s faster than my focus rs. I think a lot of French car fans may disagree with your comment.
@@Storm.Z.4u Renault F1 now alpine. Citroen in WRC (basically the best team by far of the 2000s.
@@Storm.Z.4u 205 Rallye?
When they announced this, I thought it would be my perfect car. I like Peugeots, it looks stunning both inside and out, it's plenty quick, cheap to run and it's got a bit of weirdness that a French car needs. The lack of a proper manual mode would annoy me- if it's like other 508s I believe there is a manual mode, but you can't use it in sport mode. The range would be an issue too, although I can't imagine it really only gets low 30s on a run since people claim that for my 981CS and I get 47-48 consistently (then 20 when not on a run 😄).
I'm definitely still going to be looking at one of these as well as the Volvo, not for my next car but the one after, if I can get a charging point installed.
@@moa-wg3bo Rivals with equivalent spec and performance cost more though. It depreciates a lot (although so do rivals) so as a used buyer I reckon these could be bargains at 3-4 years old.
Don't see many from this model range on the road. I followed a saloon (coupe?) on the A406 and on the road, the rear and rear 3/4 looks really good with those lights.
I don't think they've ditched the styling too much, the front grill and head lights still goes back to the old 99/00 406 slightly.
I'd love to have listened in on the meeting where they decided THIS is the "colour" of their performance line.
Thanks J, a 'quirky' French car still, but not necessarily in good ways. Good looking, but black, white & grey odd 'colour' choices to show it to best advantage! 🙏
Looks very good IRL
I like it a lot
I’d love one of these - perfect for what I need but Peugeot in NZ only sells the normal petrol only model.
Love it. If it had a better EV only range I'd chop my Model 3 in for one.
Looks great, really do like it. And will even when I order the 340d 🤦♂️
What does this Car handle like compared to the Jag specifically the estate and the German counterparts ?
If you hold the temp up button does it light a fire?
Shame for the boring colours. Would be nice if there was just pure petrol or electric version. Not a fan of touch screen for HVAC. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
I like this alot, but I live in the states and we don't get anything cool. Love your videos man ✌️
Jay, i say onevof these on the car recently and almost ended up following it, it looks soooo good!
My first car was a 205 van and my dad had a 505.
I'd by the diesel version if I'm allowed to say that these days..🥴
I adore the look of 508. It must go down as one of the best looking cars of this decade although I feel in this version it looks a little less elegant than the GT trim base cars. The only problem it has, if you want a hybrid, is that v60 which looks beautiful, is faster and has that incredible tunable suspension which apparently is a masterpiece. The new 308 has a blue interior which is to die for. If this 508 had it, I wouldn't care if the car did 1 mile to the gallon, I'd love it in my driveway.
Where was this filmed I’m sure I have been on some of those roads just couldn’t remember the location ?
If you can get your hands on a Peugeot e208, you might be pleasantly surprised. Good fun to drive, nippy and probably the closest thing Peugeot has to a hot hatch currently.
That engine is the same 1.6 litre engine from the mini cooper s r56, just bit more modern . Its also used in peugeot like the 308 gti , 208 gti and more
Do not understand how you don’t have more subs. Have you tried setting another channel with reaction videos. That work for LLF. Love the channel
Stunning car! Left field choice James, but a review of the Peugeot 408 GT 1.2 Puretech would be fantastic. One overtook me the other day and I loved the look of it. I’d appreciate your opinion
Did you get this car before it went through the paint shop ?
Damn I was gonna hate on Peugeot but man this thing looks sick
I really enjoy your reviews Jay, but I feel you've missed the point on this one in so many ways.
Yes, the fuel economy of any performance PHEV is rubbish when you're hooning it on petrol. In practice though, you'll find you do lots of very economical electric journeys, and then the occasional combined one that makes Greta cry. Overall it works out very well (I'm currently 82 mpg from factory). Imagine having a Prius daily and a Golf VR6 for weekends. No-one cares about the 23 mpg from the Golf.
Most of these types of PHEV are going to be fleet/company car leases due to the tax breaks (low BIK). So while the cash price of the Peugeot is similar to the BMW M340i, the actual monthly cost is completely different. I think the M340i will be something like 3 times the BIK (lets say £200 vs. £600 for a higher rate tax payer). And that's the point really - you can get a >300bhp monster for less than a 2 litre diesel in real money terms.
On that note, the better comparison is the 330e. It's not quite as powerful, but the drivetrain seems to make it quicker round the track (and more rewarding to drive IMHO). It, like the 508, also comes as AWD. Regarding the depreciation, since the BMW holds its value better, it actually seems to be cheaper on the lease.
Also, the small fuel tank doesn't really matter - you charge it at home/work every day, so you add in 20-50 miles on that range 20-30 times a month. In practice you'll make fewer stops at the petrol station. Yes, driving from London to Edinburgh in one go will require an extra fuel stop - but being honest, you were going to stop anyway.
You've made lots and lots of excuses for buying the wrong car.
@@tastypymp1287 What car have I bought?
@@zxspeccy48k I've already told you....
@@tastypymp1287 Enjoy the Ripspeed winter catalogue...
They put the same 1.6 turbo in the previous gen 308 GTI. Has 270 ps. Not sure if they do it with the auto box though.
Sporty estates are just cool.
Looking to change my FL Hyundai i30n for a more family friendly one and possibly into hybrid. So the 30 mpg and small tank wouldn't be an issue as it's better than what i'm getting now ha! The Peugeot 508 PSE & Volvo V60 Engineered by Polestar are on my hit list. I find the German cars all a bit meh. But these two have caught my eye and the exclusivity of the V60 & 508 is nice, might have to go for a test drive.
Is the engine the 1.6 THP? If so, then it has pedigree to some degree. It's rather common in sporty Citroëns and Peugeots of the near past, and was the base for Citroën's WRC car engines since the DS3 WRC (notably driven by Loeb) up to today with the Rally2-spec C3 (if I'm not mistaken).
Pretty sure it is yes, the Prince engine. I also wonder if it's forged like the 308 GTi. Guessing not but if so perhaps it's possible to chip the thing up to the performance of that thing- then it'd really be fast 😁 Either way definitely a great engine.
Good review as always Jay. 👍. Noted your Peugeot fuel economy quote of 32/33mpg. My 2013 Audi S6 with the 4.0TT V8 betters that with about 34 mpg on a freeway/highway run. Urban running is another story though!
You were in the parking spot earlier, that's how I know you!
I love the speed limiter on my M3. Super useful in average speed camera areas.
Or just use cruise control set at the right speed ... ;)
@@davidreynolds3082 Nah, no good in the UK. Traffic keeps speeding up and slowing down. Breaking disengages cruise control. Speed limiter is much more useful here.
@@davidreynolds3082 Don't be stupid
@@stevojohn Active cruise control sorts that, perhaps time to upgrade your spec
@@Storm.Z.4u Don't like the G80 and my F80 is low mileage. Can't really see a reason to upgrade right now TBH.
I would really love to see a Citroen C4 Vts review I think it’s a great car and there’s little to no content about it
Quite a nice car.
Did they sell any in the UK...?
I was really interested as I used to drive a PSA Hybrid. The problem with is it that it's a spicey meatball at 50 grand.!
You can already get ex-demonstrator versions of these for £40k. These will represent amazing value for money in a couple of years time when you can pick one up for £20k!
Its got the Opel insignia windows.
Same door panels and same small wheel. I drive the Buick version.
Peugeot is doing the design much better than say the current Renault lineup.
Honestly this is the Peugeot that really looks damn good
I hope they make a 308 wagon version
I know it’s a press car with alot of drivers, but that drivers seat bolster looks like it’s done 50-odd thousand miles not the sub 15k on the odo
That thing has a tidier rear end than the 90's Sun Newspaper's page 3 star, Joanne Guest! :)
This is a shaggin' wagon if I've ever seen one, gotta love dem French.
I have the same lump in my DS3, and it's okay sound isn't great but it does like a burble on overrun. I did email if you wanted a go.
Let’s hope Stellantis use some of their technology sympathetically to produce a small Alfa that will be as close to a Giulietta replacement as possible,
I don’t mean the Tonale which is still too big. You never know but James might actually like it ! They do seem to have got this Peugeot right.
I bet they love this in Ireland
Never thought that one day I would find peugeots or citroens pretty but here we are
I'm no motoring journo, but there does seem to be much picking of the nit here.
It looks amazing
It goes and stops well
It handles well
It has all the toys other manufacturers charge thousands in extras for
It's well priced
Go and buy one!
£55K is not well priced.
same price M340i is better even tho in plugin hybrid terms 330e is more comparable, but BMW is a BMW
It’s pretty clear why you are not a motoring journo.
@@lecco666 I agree but my opinion is mine and I don't care whether you agree or not
@@sriharidesai7606 not all BMW'S are equal. Particularly the PHEVs.
Looks great! However, I would instantly remove the 508 badge on the bonnet… why? 😬
I do like the 508 and considered this briefly against a volvo V60 T6 recharge. They are about the same price with simular equipment. The PSE is to sporty for me, so I ordered a V60 with 350hp. I wanted fast, but not to sporty. And on the positive site: the volvo has a bigger fueltank and a bigger battery. Since it is a company car, it neede to have less than 50gr/CO2.
Looks a lot like the Skoda Octavia (VRS) especially in that grey.
I think it has a slight resemblance to the Alfa 159 estate, and I like that
The model designation badge on the snout is a crazy move, would be the first thing I'd remove if I had one.
It is a reference to classic P models from the 60s and 70s. I, and 'they', think that oozes design class.
@@fairybuddy-angel2035 so it is, thanks for the info.
Styling does it for me.
Ride comfort is ok, but the sporty drive is beyond what you think, this car is able to carry its almost 2 tons suprisingly fast. Not as fast as golf R or GTI clubsport, but it is really capable.
Brakes have great feel and stopping distance is great.
Small steering wheel is not great for me. I am not quite comfortable with seating position and small steering wheel. I preferet a little bigger diameter round steering wheels that is not too thick or thin.
These seats are not very breathable and they could use ventilation.
Headlights are not matrix.
Night vision function is good thing and it is not a gimmick.
Car is expensive for what it does.
Only usable option for companies or heavily taxed regions.
5/10 for consumer.
8/10 for companies in EU.
9:30 wow the side of the seat is creased up already
Will you ever review the Hyundai i20N.
The family hauler 308 GT has all the same positives and the same failures. Happy only when pressing on at its ideal six tenths. Any harder and the spongy gearchange / clutch become obvious and the suspension will no longer be able to control the low profile of the tyres. Thinking of swapping for the smaller diameter wheel for the larger sidewalls that I think it will handle better, in a far more French Comfort way.
Love the small steering wheel iCockpit setup though, materials are very decent, Puretech engine is great and the load capacity is just plain LARGE!
I’m curious if some software tuning could significantly improve the drivetrain, smoother electric engine transitions and better shuffling of the power. I would say I could live the the quirks and everything else but that fuel tank is kind of a joke 😳
As an American, this is a prime example of forbidden fruit!!
Such a shame the Peugeot stopped making enthusiast cars the last was the 308 gti. Peugeot we need more gti versions of your cars.
People didn't want to buy them as they were shit.
@@Storm.Z.4u 😂 that's your unfounded opinion Peugeot troll
If you really like a good Peugeot estate.
I thoroughly recommend that you check out another variation of the 508 but be warned they are incredibly rare.
I am talking about the Peugeot 508 RXH.
Very different from a normal Peugeot 508 SW.
Biggest flaw is indeed the lack of 100% control. If the gearbox had a manual option and the power train a "full power" or "quali lap" thing would be so much better.
And when you think about it. It's just damn software.
Interesting to hear the V60 Polestar is discontinued in Europe considering the Polestar Engineered is the only way to get a V60 in the United States
Tbf I love a sporty estate and this looks brilliant, you then think “ooooh I’ll investigate further “ and then you see it’s £50k 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 the golf r estate is about the same (still ludicrous for a golf) but in 5 years this pug will be £10k tops.
Think about his will be a collectors item. A new Golf will never be that. These PSE versions are selling in small numbers = one to run and keep.
Love estates. None of that climbing up into an suv.
I'm not huge on the save the wagons thing, because I think they're dying for demographic reasons, but I'm glad Peugeot made this car.
Wish the new 208 got the PSE treatment, but, with electrification, it seems unlikely.
Love the Pug 508, I have the 508 SW First Edition puretech 1.6 turbo 225 bhp model in twilight blue with red leather. My lovely wife treated me to the full Maxton Design Body Kit, so its going to be one of a kind because there is only 24 First Edition models in the UK. I a few other trip bits that are going to go on the vehicle. Power wise its rapid in what ever mode you put it into, sport mode it really does pick up quick, it also has a bit of a twitch on the back end if the road surface it crap. The 508 is nice inside & out, it does turn heads where ever I go, I always caught many people giving it a second look.
Which pure electric wagons are you referring to? None exist. Very maybe EV6 qualifies but it's chunky.
épouvantable
