I am on vacation in Crete - visited the cemetery in Souda for the fallen Allied troops and went to Maleme to show my respect to the German Paratroopers by bringing soil from Austria and spreading it between the gravestones. May all fallen soldiers rest easy! A retired Austrian soldier...

As a Greek I would like to point out, that the german paratrooopers on Crete, outlived the 3rd Reich by 3months, surrendering to the royal british marines in mid- July 1945 being outstanding soldiers and deserving respect for such an accomplishment.
An extra ordinary kind of men. Still they have been ordered to fight against civilians. Comitted crimes if you know the Geneve convention and the Hager Landkriegsverordnung. These men where great fighters, betrayed by there own government.

My father fought the Fallschirmjager in Crete and monte Cassino with the famous 1st Echelon of 20th Battalion of the 2nd NZEF. I have so much respect for the Fallschirmjager that I will have to add to this post! Great men on both sides, my mother and father were welcomed into the Fallschirmjager hospitality in may 1981. I will explain more later! Thank you for making this available!

Am I the only one who notices how almost every Paratrooper song from World War 2 is about the death of how a paratrooper Dies? Gory Gory(Blood upon the risers) The US paratrooper song is about how a paratrooper gets tangled in his parachute that fails,this song is about how a Fallschirmjäger Gets shot in the heart and bleeds out none the less though overall I do love the song it’s very catchy.
The Italian one "come folgore dal cielo" goes also in that direction saying that they have place reserved in the cimitery.
Its because the risk that paratroopers took. Jumping off a plane, in a squad of maybe 300-500 men at best, into enemy lines, littered with AA guns and sometimes without armored support

Westerners have forgotten, that warfare is often suicidal, when at this level with a real determined military enemy on almost equal terms, not NATO vs goat herders or libyan civilians or serbian civilians etc. This is particularly true for elite units such as paratroopers. The song transmits this message of futility of long term survival to its recruits. This is why in the past the training was real, challenging and intense. Today, political leaders have watered it all down and made it in many cases coed, as if future warfare will always be NATO vs civilians or goat herders, and everyone gets to go home to a pension and benefits. The Day of Reckoning cometh for the West.

How the brits lost the battle of crete is beyond comprehension. There's no question that the worst performing general officer staff in WW2 was British. It's as if they trained them to be maximally incompetent.
the commander of the defence of crete was a new zealander, dude. Bernard Freyberg.. the battle was lost mainly because he mistakenly thought the italian navy was the larger threat when he couldve just sent all his troops to defend heraklion airport.

My Deutsch is shaky but I believe the "von" translated "from" (early on when it speaks of para dreaming "from home") should be translated "of.". If I recall correctly, "von" can mean "of," which would make a lot more sense.

*The last German paratrooper in Crete* is *Hans Masur* ,He died at the age of 100. He was one of the last living veterans of the airborne operation in Crete.
He later fought on the Eastern Front and in the Ramcke Brigade near El Alamein.

In one of the trickiest missions of the war, the Green Devils, so nicknamed by the British who respected the German paratrooper's fighting qualities, pulled off an extraordinary coup. Just out of respect, this video is a tribute to the men who fought against tyranny and fought for tyrants, they did there a duty to there country as Americans, British, Australians, and many other unsaid nations. This song doesn't represent the tyranny of the Nazis, this represents the sacrifice given by many of men who did their job, Glory to Europa, God Speed to you all.
