Virgil is on his own level. Just an absolute beast! The man eats, drinks and sleeps drumming. His entire life is devoted to being a titan on his instrument. You have to respect and constantly be inspired by such a dedicated musician
This guy is so on top of this instrument. I love watching him play all this crazy stuff with his traditional grip. I can barely keep time to his playing it's so outside the beat most of the time. I just added his channel. He's one of my favorite drummers. In a way he reminds me of a modern day prog rock version of Buddy Rich. The speed and finesse of his playing are very impressive. High energy. Very inspiring.
Astounding skill. Been playing drums for years (as a hack drummer) and cannot fathom the dedication and time required to get this good. I sincerely hope I can see you in Australia again... once this damn COVID fiasco is under some control.
Absolutely love his mix levels especially on that bass drum!!! The slap from the beater going through the mids and tweets....always so crisp and clean!!! Amazing!!!!
Very inspiring performance Virgil! This kind of stuff helps put that fire in me that makes me want to get on my kit. Thanks for sharing this priceless work.
Just started listening to his stuff, and after years of searching for good drummers, he fits the bill so well. The precision of Weckl, the feel and syncopation of Gadd, the intensity of Colaiuta, the musicality of Peart, Virgil has it all.
I consider Virgil, Dave Weckl and Akira Jimbo to be the top-tier of drummers. All three are just absolutely incredible! Each one with their own style yet absolute beasts on the kit!
If you want to understand what Virgil is doing, try to picture a man speaking to 4 people at the same time, but for person 1 is one set of words, for person 2 second different set of words with speed and rhythm, for person 3 is the third set of words with different speed and rhythm from previous 2... and everyone understands each other.
Amazing stuff!! So inspiring to see several takes on Castle Bastard and NBC, how you interpret the solo sections in different ways, a lesson in itself.
Killing it as always Virgil! Every time I watch you play I pick up something new. I watched you play with Allan in Phoenix from about 12 feet in front of you. The power and energy coming out was impressive. I saw jaws hitting the floor lol
There may be other drummers who can do smooth ,fluid and speedy drumming. However, this guy's drumming has a very thick rhythmic trunk with strong torque. I also love his far-reaching sound that seems to be almost unmuted.
Thank you for taking the time to share this piece of work. I hope we can appreciate, enjoy and take advantage of this kind of material!! Awesome content!!
Thank you Virgil for your deep mastery of rhythm and the drum set. You are one of a kind ... far reaching in everything you play. You are from a different planet Mr. V-Man.
I've been fortunate enough to see all of the top shelf players, either in a group or clinics.Starting with Thomas Lang who was not only beyond words but found myself laughing hysterically out of sheer joy and amazement like a child. And the kicker?...he was using friggin pulp logs for sticks, like 2B's or the equivalent.Funny as hell too.Said he had the best view in the house when he toured with the spice girls getting a primo rear view (without being vulgar)Then there was Mike Mangini with Steve Vai and 2 separate clinics.Again jaw on the floor with a hand speed that seemed to defy physical law.The day after his clinic the drums and cymbals he used were set up at the local music store and I tell ya folks,no bullshit most of the crash cymbals looked like they've been run over by a bus.His right foot pedal controlled the left bass drum beater and the left pedal controlled the right kicker. Then came the Marco Minnemann clinic and one of his solos (I'll do my best to describe this)He had a video screen behind him and it was part of a Monty Python movie where 4 or 5 of them were sitting together talking amongst themselves and Marco was matching their conversation by hitting drums. If the person talking had a low voice he would play on low toms matching every syllable.Hihg voice...high toms and if there was anything said emphatically he would match it with higher volume and intensity. And through all this madness he was actually counting with his hi hat foot.My friends words fall short of witnessing this. Maybe it's up on UA-cam cuz it has to be seen to be believed. Not much to say about Gavin Harrison except he had the best sounding kit (Sonar)I've ever heard. Each drum I swear sounded like a note and with no dampening I could see.If he hit two drums at the same time it sounded like a chord.Things I noticed about him that stood out was he wasn't a hard hitter but still had a lot of attack, volume and a godlike precision. He also displayed no facial changes from exertion no matter how intense his playing was.Almost the same as Neil Peart where they seem to go into a zone of concentration.Last but no least there's Mr.Donati who was with Planet X at the time.A friend and myself showed up at the venue way early and nobody was at the door and nobody lined up so the two of us just walked upstairs like we belonged there and met with no security(it was a tiny bar)And that is where I bore witness to the most incredible display of musicianship I've ever seen folks. They were rehearsing for the evening show and the hardest thing was to try and maintain ourselves from screaming in amazement. They were playing in time signatures from another dimension and we did our best to contain ourselves and thank God when we went to the show that night we could scream ourselves hoarse and not be thrown out.Sorry to ramble on everyone and thanks for listening to an old fart ramble on.Oh yeah one more thing......Virgil Donati has traveled through a wormhole and must be stopped..he he.
@@coopsawright7225 absolutely. you can find live videos with both of them, and Allan featured on some of Virgil's projects/albums. there's some beautiful riffs and solos in those works.
you just made my morning , that's great news ! Alan is my favorite guitar player of all time and Virgil is easily in the top 10 all time best drummers and possibly the most skillful all time drummers ! Against the clock is a cool Alan H song too, which is on the clinic playlist here and that's why i asked. Cheers mate.@@skameron831
Thanks for sharing this, loads of valuable info here. Will save this for my own reference. Love the examples of metric modulation, some cool ideas there. 👏👏👏
He turned 62 in October (2020)...he would have turned 61 shortly before this particular (Australian Clinic) tour...but hey, who is counting (heehee)?...he got his first kit when he was 2(!), and he played with his father's showband until age 6(!)...he's a phenomenal drummer..
The fact dream theater passed on this guy blows my fucking mind. He has a dream theater cover band. I imagine he plays dream theater music when he wants a break from playing difficult music.
Few other humans on planet earth have been more committed on the drum set craft or have put in more hours than Virgil Donati. He is truly a Drumset Monk. And any female who chose to attend this even event I would no doubt marry.
I saw Virgil play at three different times over the course of 3 yrs. and each time he had improved. I realize that's what we're supposed to do but, how do you do that when you're at his level?
i recently watch vid stormbringer prj joel...before this i did know u....i try to find out who is virgil??? u are brilliant bro!! super briliant! super vocano tone! skils..pergh..
power drumming!:) i'm always work with it, it's the best warm up. of course i get the speed two steps down on media player, but who knows...maybe one day:)
I was watching his drumming from the early 80s...or was it 70s with a band. Seemed pretty straight forward. I actually didnt recognize him due to the video quality but then he had a solo and i thought "oh thats him"
This is just absolutely ridiculous. I swear when I first heard about him in the early 2000s it was like you couldn't catch him playing pocket or 4/4 for long, it was odd time all the time and it got exhausting and I moved on... but now I must reluctantly say, I was wrong he is absolutely on that utter freak level alongside Vinnie...

WELL SAID
Maxx Doran can play a mean classical piano as well.
Good words.
That's It!
titan, yes.. but the flower left unexplored. At least it would seem. fatal flaw.
Incomparable. The simplicity is that there’s only one Virgil, and like the sun he’s untouchable.
Makin' me smile and shake my head for over two decades.
Smiles..
Shake head...
Same here. 😄
THANK YOU for pushing the boundries of the instrument and showing what a life of integrity and dedication can archieve.
Good time to be alive... Such a treat to witness what this guy can do.
This is as close to Planet X as we will get))
I wonder if people realize he's 60. Simply amazing!!

It's like being on the train track and behind you comes Denzel Washington with 4 locomotives and 40 wagons! Unstoppable!
Thank you Virgil for hours and hours of outstanding music and extremely good content, regards
His endurance is astounding, damn I'm puffed out just watching him

Really moving... a wonderful wonder as he moves further into jazz fusion progressive boundaries.
Wow ! Almost one and a half hours performance of Mr. Donati!!!! Real present!!!!
Always great Virgil. Many greetings from Bali! :-)
This is a FANTASTIC GIFT!!!! Thanks Virgil!!!
I had the immense pleasure of attending both the clinic in Sydney and also Southern Sons in Thrirroul. THANK YOU Virgil!!!

Fantastic as always!
I found this so relaxing for some reason, fell right damn asleep!

can you believe this is a 62 yr ol boy?
I worked with Virg back in the 80's. He was a health freak back then.
He turned 62 in October (2020)...he would have turned 61 shortly before this particular (Australian Clinic) tour...but hey, who is counting (heehee)?...he got his first kit when he was 2(!), and he played with his father's showband until age 6(!)...he's a phenomenal drummer..
Virgil has definitely taken the road less traveled, and it's been so worth it.
The Master!!!
The fact dream theater passed on this guy blows my fucking mind. He has a dream theater cover band. I imagine he plays dream theater music when he wants a break from playing difficult music.
If aliens ever threaten us, we'll unleash Virgil Donati to make their heads explode.
