Pretty sure every headphone Sony ever made is an MDR by nature. MDR was just a way to separate their speakers from their headphones cause it stood for micro dynamic receiver.
I bought Sony MDR MV1 yesterday here in Dubai and my experience has been freakishly good so far ! i have Hifiman Arya Stealth and Audeze LCD X. A, B comparison withy Arya is killing Arya so far! cant believe it honestly. Sony MRV1 sounds holographic to me compared to Arya which lacks depth may i dare to say, at least for my ears. i have tested on Hifiman EF400 and AudioQuest Dragon cobalt so far as these are the two amps i own. i must say i am really impressed and keep going back to the new Sony MRV1. tracks with 3D audio, jazz and instrumentals specially sound so real it freaked me out last night! do let it burn in for a few hours before you give it a try with open ears and open mind !
@@ChrisKeyman for me Sony MV1 sounded quite energetic specially upper mids. Sometimes I feel I have to tone down the volume on some tracks vs LCD X which is a bit dark in comparison. However given its weight and overall sound character I find more comfortable listening to Sonys. Arya on 2nd listening session sounded better compared to Sony to be honest. But overall Sony is not bad. And given its small form I am using it more often.
@chriskeyman I completely agree with you. Lcd x is not bad but given all 3 options I prefer Sony. Weight also is another practical factor which helps with the choice perhaps
That is exactly what these headphones are about. 3D audio/Spatial audio for music and movies and gaming. These are not the ones to sit and listen to in Stereo. The tuning is for 360 degree pinpointing.
I’m definitely going to put the MV1s on my list for future headphones. I also love that early 90s aesthetic, and I wonder if considering its jack terminates to 4 poles at the headphones, the 4.4mm Pentacon balanced connector will work. I used to own an MA-900, and the comfort and soundstage were exquisite. I still kick myself for selling it. There are a few other v-shaped open backs, like the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250, Philips Fidelio X2HR, and Sennheiser HD660S2, but that is a fairly uncommon sound signature for an open back.

an easy to drive single entry, non proprietary jack open back with a bassy slant headphone is rare indeed! until recently i would only put the fidelio x2 in this category. my x2 has recently developed a loose connection in the jack and i was considering buying a new pair but ill consider these sonys now too.
had this coming together with a HD650 and must say it render the Senny to be unremarkable on first listen. The Sony is just so surprising with its tuning, impressive for an open back, more quantity than the HD650, Ananda, AD1000x, heck its more sub bass than Sony's own MDR 1Am2. the one headphone it remind me most of actually is Sony's flagship headphone: Sony MDR Z1R.

I picked up this pair earlier this week and had been using it everyday since. It is superbly comfortable and the build quality is excellent (the metal housing, the padding, and even the cable is pretty good). I am also a big fan of its minimalist packaging. Nothing superfluous and wasteful. But I find them to sound a little too bright on the high end in some situations - which is surprising because I typically prefer brightness. Sometimes I find myself lowering the volume even... Will keep an eye on it. Overall I am happy with the MDR-MV1

If you want make them less bright get some AKG K240 or Beyer Dynamic DT 880, 990 pads foam which is placed in front of the drivers. They're large enough to be cut to size of the Sony pads. Nice, though unsurprisingly pricey. On the closed-back side, Sony's MDR-1AM2 (bought on sale) is my go-to for a lightweight, easy-to-drive, dynamic, fun-sounding headphone; especially when traveling. Aside from the rich sound output, I particularly like that it comes with a balanced single-entry cable (albeit short) and the deceptively roomy earpads that my ears tuck into... a very clever design, IMO. The cups swivel inwardly, unlike the MV1, so you can rest them around your neck when not using them. Overall a solid, underrated value pick in the on-the-go HP arena, IMO.
the Cheap Senny HD599 has pretty good bass. I used it with a Hip Dac 3 with that bass boost function, and it could keep up with my Focal Bathys as far as slam goes. The Bathys just did it in a Tighter, more focused way. but if you want to add an open back that can get pretty low and not sound terrible. the 599 is pretty good for that. and comfortable as heck
So many reviewers don't get that these headphones are not really for sitting in a chair and listening in Stereo to some Jazz track etc. These are designed for studio use and even more so for spatial mixing of audio. I wish reviewers would listen more to Sony 360 and Atmos recording and movies/TV shows and gaming with these particular cans. They are made to be able to pinpoint sound in a 360 degree field They are also designed to be capture the sound of you actual speaker and studio speakers and recreate them in the headphones using mic recording in your ears. I want to hear how they sound watching a movie with Atmos or Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 audio. Hearing how it can place audio behind you and in sound stage. THAT is what thee headphones might be the killer of other headphones. Same for gaming. Most reviewers only think of Stereo and music. And that would be like kneecapping a product that is not really designed for it.
You have got your problem backward. You want reviews of this headphone from the perspective of people who are not reviewing this headphone. The problem is not that the people who are reviewing it (e.g. me) don't share your use case, but that people who do share your use case aren't reviewing it. I do not care at all about how a headphone performs with Dolby Digital 5.1. You don't want my opinion on how well this headphone does it.
I wish someone compares these with hd660s2. Especially on sale it's also 400. So that makes the comparison interesting. Because it will be really difficult to beat senns on same price, isn't it?

I didn't know Sony were still releasing new high-ish end (at least for me) wired headphones; it's a good thing because I feel like most of their products are very competently designed. I'm not sure what you'd call the more retro/industrial(?) looking design language but I think it looks great Edit: Have you tried dt 700 pro x, or any of their closed back line? There are so many Insanely good and excellent IEM, I never heard an Headphone that comes even close to them. Shure SE846, Sony IER-M9, FitEar TG335, Westone Mach 70/80, Vision Ears VE6/8 There is not one single headphone that comes even remotely close to them
A studio headphone with cable that is probably best for studio? Made my brain itch a little lol. It's a good headphone for it's asking price as a studio specific. Unfortunately, I have to return them as it doesn't have redeeming qualities to make it interesting enough to keep around along with my current NDH 30. I do like how we are now starting to get our money's worth with recent releases. Hopefully it will be a trend with regards to studio headphones .
Looks like Sony finally used all the good stuff from their flagship headphone lines Studio functionality from their legacy 7506, V6 line Headband and light weight materials from the Z7 series First open back since the SA series But still packs the low-end rumble Sony's known for.
Interestingly enough you can see the early version of the MDR MV1 in the "Sony Digital Press Event at CES 2021: Sony Transforms Content Creation And Delivery" video.
I'd like a more direct review, since it's designed for spatial qualities. Sony claims to have designed them for spatial audio mixers. Things like staging and imaging should be really important to it, a better review might have been to compare it to HD800S in its spatial prowess.
now if only they put out an openback or over-ear in the price range of the 7506, they would immediately have my attention... MV1 sounds really solid though, can't wait to see future releases
Im just glad that with this out, many Sony backed studios have a better headphones to monitor with, 7506 and V6 are legendary but are way less comfortable and frankly sound meh in modern standard, true that Sony have MDR M1st out and that barely make a dent on studio headphone market but hey this one is actually tuned differently adn for different use case from manu of studio headphones, enough that people who want bass would probably be better served here than on other headphones.
Hi, I am looking for my first headphone. Was looking at sivga oriole for closed back and these for open back. These cost around $300 here in India. Same as sundara. Could you suggest what could be the best ones around this price? I do like bass but also dont want something muddy. A well balanced headphones only for music listening. Was also looking at fiio ft3. While it's nice to know that they check out to a consumer audiophile, these headphones were designed and optimized for Sony's Virtual Mixing Environment which I've used and offers mixing engineers an opportunity to mix in virtual environments very accurately. I'm actually surprised that they're selling it separately from that usage.

Extremely light weight and comfortable. I love these for gaming and streaming. Not my go to for critical music listening, but it's fantastic for hours on end. I tried the Hifiman Edition XS, but they were painful after 30 minutes. Went up to the Hifiman Arya Organic, which sounded amazing, but I couldn't justify the price for just gaming and discord chatting. I use monitor speakers for nearly all of my music listening at my desk. If I was looking for a TOTL headphone I would have stuck with the Arya Organic, but for the same price I picked up the MV1 for at my desk at home and used Sony IER-M9 for more critical listening. The imaging and clarity on the M9 is well worth the more intimate stage.
I have to use Dekoni Nuggets for the Edition XS, but it’s worth it (for me). I’ve never met a HiFiMan that fit me (granted, I’ve only had HE-500 and Edition XS).

$400 kind of pricey, but most likely will sell at lower price. And 24ohm driver's impedance means headphone amp has to have very low output impedance. I wish Sennheiser really made open backs with bass extension of the MV1 and the rest of tonality of 6** series - it would be an awesome set cans.

And I really dislike, actually I hate it with passion, synthetic leather ear pads. All my attempts to change ear pads also changed the tonality, so we are kind of stuck in dog chasing it's own tail situation.
Based on the CoolerMaster MH752 and the Takstar Pro82 the swivel might be a weak point but depending on the plastic they use it should be fine. The plastic on the MH752 are soft so after years of swiveling they'll crumble.
@@Qimchiy been using it for roughly 3 years ( bought it in 2ndhand ) and it still holds strong . i haven't seen anyone online with reporting issues with these Sony headphones since 2014 when it was released . not too sure about the "swivel point" that you mentioned , but i can say that Sony headphones are built decently and mine still swivels fine
I love the design but I have grow weary of V shaped sounds. Unless V shaped in IEM's and Headphones at different. Maybe I have to look at the chart for the XM3 again because I was totally okay with that bloated bass presentation.

Do you do much gaming with your headphones or IEM'S? I'd be intriged in how these compare with the dt900 pro x, for gaming (mainly fps) i like the dt900 pro x but if there is even more bass, with no bleed and still be accurate with sound cues, it could be a fun set for that
@Super* Review I mainly play FPS games and I have noticed that certain headphones or IEM'S have a lot better imaging and depth perception than others. Another thing that I have noticed is that it doesn't always line up with what you hear in music, which I always found interesting. In single player games, immersion is always better but in FPS directional in a 3D space, is the most important. I'd love to find a set like these, that may be good with directional and still have a nice level of fun to them. The 900 pro x does this ok

MDR-Z7M2's are the best made most comfortable Headphones I've owned if they offer an open version that are built as well then im in . These just look cheap but overpriced
Surprised it didn't come with a 4.4 pentaconn cable as well. Sony is notorious for offering that cable with almost all their high end headphones. But then again, these are "studio grade" and not "consumer headphones" so I can understand why they didn't. Most studios dont even have a way to plug in a 4.4 pentaconn cable. NONE of Sony's headphones are V shaped in terms of studio/high end. Not one. The issue is you are used to shit headphone brands that are touted as being "the best" when they aren't. I currently run the Z7M2's with beyerdynamic velour pads and a new twisted cable because my old one broke and might as well waste $200 on a cable. Before and after the mods the headphones were never V shaped. YES with velour pads the top end is sharper because "pads effect sound to your ears" even if people don't admit it. Its even measurable. But definitely not V shaped. YOUR ISSUE is that you are used to headphones with insane roll off on the low end. Because most "audiophile" headphones are just designed for people who don't like "natural bass" so when you hear natural bass, you assume "bloated" bass and cry "V shape" when its not. MORE THAN LIKELY, these headphones are what bass SHOULD sound like. I bought the HD660s2's from Sennheiser and holy shit are they bad. YES, they have more bass than typical Sennheiser open back headphones. the biggest killer of bass for headphones is open back. so its usually common to have bad bass and extreme roll off, as my point above. the 660s2's happen to have bass, but due to the driver and overall design, they wont go as loud as my sony Z7M2's.... like not even close. the Sennheisers will begin to distort mechanically due to the bass being bloated and the open back design/driver design unable to handle it. the 660s2's are great for someone who likes quiet or moderate listening levels but for anyone that likes to crank, dogshit. which brings me to these sony's, i dont own them. so I don't know. but being open back, they will most likely suffer. EXCEPT sony's product page specifically states it can handle 1500mw which means 1.5w of power. that's kinda insane loudness wise. I haven't measured the output of my FiiO K9 PRO ESS dac/amp with gain setting 2, but they get pretty loud. and as I said, sennheisers can't handle it, but my sony's can. and it seem like these sony's, might handle it too. so im curious if they can actually handle 1.5w of power as claimed.
Wow, I thought the Sony Defense Force was just a video game nerd thing. V-shape is not an insult, it's just got more bass and treble emphasis than what's commonly described as neutral. If you think more-bass-and-treble-than-what's-commonly-described-as-neutral is in fact neutral, congrats, you have a definition that works for one person. And if you're listening at volume levels that distort a 660S, the Fletcher-Munson theory would suggest you're hearing even more bass and treble than a person who's not destroying their hearing. The fidelio is really bad which is why they are so cheap. Bloated and muddy bass and piercing highs which are really painful.

The balanced cable on 1AM2 should fit the MV1 like a glove.

So many reviewers don't get that these headphones are not really for sitting in a chair and listening in Stereo to some Jazz track etc. These are designed for studio use and even more so for spatial mixing of audio.
I wish reviewers would listen more to Sony 360 and Atmos recording and movies/TV shows and gaming with these particular cans. They are made to be able to pinpoint sound in a 360 degree field
They are also designed to be capture the sound of you actual speaker and studio speakers and recreate them in the headphones using mic recording in your ears.
I want to hear how they sound watching a movie with Atmos or Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 audio. Hearing how it can place audio behind you and in sound stage. THAT is what thee headphones might be the killer of other headphones.
Same for gaming.
Most reviewers only think of Stereo and music. And that would be like kneecapping a product that is not really designed for it.

I do not care at all about how a headphone performs with Dolby Digital 5.1. You don't want my opinion on how well this headphone does it.
I wish someone compares these with hd660s2. Especially on sale it's also 400. So that makes the comparison interesting. Because it will be really difficult to beat senns on same price, isn't it?

I didn't know Sony were still releasing new high-ish end (at least for me) wired headphones; it's a good thing because I feel like most of their products are very competently designed. I'm not sure what you'd call the more retro/industrial(?) looking design language but I think it looks great

A studio headphone with cable that is probably best for studio? Made my brain itch a little lol. It's a good headphone for it's asking price as a studio specific. Unfortunately, I have to return them as it doesn't have redeeming qualities to make it interesting enough to keep around along with my current NDH 30. I do like how we are now starting to get our money's worth with recent releases. Hopefully it will be a trend with regards to studio headphones .

Interestingly enough you can see the early version of the MDR MV1 in the "Sony Digital Press Event at CES 2021: Sony Transforms Content Creation And Delivery" video.
The last Sony open back line isn't the SA, it's the MA series, from 40 to 250 usd, MA100 to MA900.

I'd like a more direct review, since it's designed for spatial qualities. Sony claims to have designed them for spatial audio mixers. Things like staging and imaging should be really important to it, a better review might have been to compare it to HD800S in its spatial prowess.
Perhaps the Philips Fidelio X2HR can rival the bass of the MV1.

Im just glad that with this out, many Sony backed studios have a better headphones to monitor with, 7506 and V6 are legendary but are way less comfortable and frankly sound meh in modern standard, true that Sony have MDR M1st out and that barely make a dent on studio headphone market but hey this one is actually tuned differently adn for different use case from manu of studio headphones, enough that people who want bass would probably be better served here than on other headphones.
Hi, I am looking for my first headphone. Was looking at sivga oriole for closed back and these for open back. These cost around $300 here in India. Same as sundara. Could you suggest what could be the best ones around this price? I do like bass but also dont want something muddy. A well balanced headphones only for music listening. Was also looking at fiio ft3. While it's nice to know that they check out to a consumer audiophile, these headphones were designed and optimized for Sony's Virtual Mixing Environment which I've used and offers mixing engineers an opportunity to mix in virtual environments very accurately. I'm actually surprised that they're selling it separately from that usage.

Extremely light weight and comfortable. I love these for gaming and streaming. Not my go to for critical music listening, but it's fantastic for hours on end.
I tried the Hifiman Edition XS, but they were painful after 30 minutes. Went up to the Hifiman Arya Organic, which sounded amazing, but I couldn't justify the price for just gaming and discord chatting. I use monitor speakers for nearly all of my music listening at my desk.
If I was looking for a TOTL headphone I would have stuck with the Arya Organic, but for the same price I picked up the MV1 for at my desk at home and used Sony IER-M9 for more critical listening. The imaging and clarity on the M9 is well worth the more intimate stage.

I have to use Dekoni Nuggets for the Edition XS, but it’s worth it (for me). I’ve never met a HiFiMan that fit me (granted, I’ve only had HE-500 and Edition XS).

$400 kind of pricey, but most likely will sell at lower price. And 24ohm driver's impedance means headphone amp has to have very low output impedance. I wish Sennheiser really made open backs with bass extension of the MV1 and the rest of tonality of 6** series - it would be an awesome set cans.
Well Sennheiser did come out with the HD660-S2, which has very deep extending bass performance, but it’s extremely overpriced at USD 600 dollars.

But it's not closed back, so no Sennheserish sound of 6** on the go or when you don't want disturb other people around you. And I really dislike, actually I hate it with passion, synthetic leather ear pads. All my attempts to change ear pads also changed the tonality, so we are kind of stuck in dog chasing it's own tail situation.

Based on the CoolerMaster MH752 and the Takstar Pro82 the swivel might be a weak point but depending on the plastic they use it should be fine. The plastic on the MH752 are soft so after years of swiveling they'll crumble.
it's all copied from Sony MDR-1A and that headphones does survive for quite a long time, at least with my experience

@Super* Review I mainly play FPS games and I have noticed that certain headphones or IEM'S have a lot better imaging and depth perception than others. Another thing that I have noticed is that it doesn't always line up with what you hear in music, which I always found interesting. In single player games, immersion is always better but in FPS directional in a 3D space, is the most important. I'd love to find a set like these, that may be good with directional and still have a nice level of fun to them. The 900 pro x does this ok

I'm not sure if the Hi-Fi Man plays in the league of "studio monitors" in the comparison segment. It seems the Sony MV1 belongs to a class that is not meant to "impress" audiophiles, but rather to be used in professional settings.

Jesus Christ, are these stupid converter cables becoming a new trend? First HD560S, now MDR-MV1. Just make a 3.5mm plug with a 6.35mm screw-on adapter, FFS.
Think they've been around too long to be considered a trend.
6.3 is just way more sturdy than 3.5 dude, especially when the gears that these are meant to be plugged in also output at 6.3mm.

Not sure, it's single-sided entry but the 3.5mm cable is 4-pole, so maybe. They're very easy to drive, no benefit from balanced TBH.

Z7M2 definitely feels premium in a way this doesn't. But does weigh almost twice as much, so there are tradeoffs.
Never buying Sony heapdphones again. In my MDR-1A the headphone jack died after a few months and is very hard to repair.

Surprised it didn't come with a 4.4 pentaconn cable as well. Sony is notorious for offering that cable with almost all their high end headphones. But then again, these are "studio grade" and not "consumer headphones" so I can understand why they didn't. Most studios dont even have a way to plug in a 4.4 pentaconn cable.
NONE of Sony's headphones are V shaped in terms of studio/high end. Not one. The issue is you are used to shit headphone brands that are touted as being "the best" when they aren't. I currently run the Z7M2's with beyerdynamic velour pads and a new twisted cable because my old one broke and might as well waste $200 on a cable. Before and after the mods the headphones were never V shaped. YES with velour pads the top end is sharper because "pads effect sound to your ears" even if people don't admit it. Its even measurable. But definitely not V shaped.
YOUR ISSUE is that you are used to headphones with insane roll off on the low end. Because most "audiophile" headphones are just designed for people who don't like "natural bass" so when you hear natural bass, you assume "bloated" bass and cry "V shape" when its not. MORE THAN LIKELY, these headphones are what bass SHOULD sound like.
I bought the HD660s2's from Sennheiser and holy shit are they bad. YES, they have more bass than typical Sennheiser open back headphones. the biggest killer of bass for headphones is open back. so its usually common to have bad bass and extreme roll off, as my point above. the 660s2's happen to have bass, but due to the driver and overall design, they wont go as loud as my sony Z7M2's.... like not even close. the Sennheisers will begin to distort mechanically due to the bass being bloated and the open back design/driver design unable to handle it. the 660s2's are great for someone who likes quiet or moderate listening levels but for anyone that likes to crank, dogshit.
which brings me to these sony's, i dont own them. so I don't know. but being open back, they will most likely suffer. EXCEPT sony's product page specifically states it can handle 1500mw which means 1.5w of power. that's kinda insane loudness wise. I haven't measured the output of my FiiO K9 PRO ESS dac/amp with gain setting 2, but they get pretty loud. and as I said, sennheisers can't handle it, but my sony's can. and it seem like these sony's, might handle it too. so im curious if they can actually handle 1.5w of power as claimed.
Wow, I thought the Sony Defense Force was just a video game nerd thing. V-shape is not an insult, it's just got more bass and treble emphasis than what's commonly described as neutral. If you think more-bass-and-treble-than-what's-commonly-described-as-neutral is in fact neutral, congrats, you have a definition that works for one person. And if you're listening at volume levels that distort a 660S, the Fletcher-Munson theory would suggest you're hearing even more bass and treble than a person who's not destroying their hearing. You like bass and treble, no shame in that.

My baseline kill/death ratio is set iPhone speakers, in PUBG it's 1.2:1. With M50x, no change, still 1.2:1. With MV1, goes up to 2:1.
