  • Meal planning seems to be a big trend right now, and we can't forget our horses when it comes to preparing meals right? I find it saves time during the week, when I am really busy and don't have a lot of time. So to plan ahead for the week, I fill ALL my hay nets so I don't have to do it every morning and evening. It may look like a lot, because it is! But having 40 hay nets gives me enough meals for 2 horses for just about 10 days, which is great if I am determining how much hay I have, or just want to get a head start on meal planning for the horses. It is a very good feeling to go out to the barn, and have a lot of hay on pallets as well as having a full week or so of filled hay nets!

Buy the garbage cans that have handles that stick up and it would save you so much time with the chip clips, I've seen them at garage sales too !

Have you thought about using a wall mounted, collapsible hay net? I use hay hoops, it’s mounted on the wall, so all I do is open it and dump the hay into it from a tub I’ve already weighed before hand and close it back up. The horses still get the benefits of a slower feeding hay net (I use a webbed hay net with smaller holes), and I save so much time by not wrestling hay nets. I was using ikea bags to store my pre-weighed hay, but I found its so quick that I don’t really need to, I can just weigh it in the tub before feeding and dump and they are good to go!

I was hoping to see how you tie the net after you fill it.

I'm going to help you save some more time. Stop tying and untying the ropes at the top of the nets. Put a snap on each one and call it good. No more tying nets up- just wrap the string around the rail a few times and snap it back on the net. Put up and take down are easy, simple and fast. No more dealing with knots.

Typically about 3 to 4. I go more by the weight of the hay net, and they typically end up weighting about 20 lbs

Why do you put the hay in nets? Why not just give them flakes?

When I feed them in the nets there is less waste, and it makes them slow down and eat a little bit at a time. A full hay net can last them 5 or 6 hours, but if I were to feed the hay in flakes, they can polish off 3 or 4 flakes in about 90 minutes. They hay lasts longer, and it keeps them busy for longer periods of time. I am away from home for about 110 hours a day, so I like to keep them busy while I am away. Using the haynets works well for me, but I know it doesn't for some people.
