Funny I just lost my sewjo and you posted a video! And I did walk away from my project and started a knitting project. Thank you! Also no such thing as selfish sewing 🙂 in my world. Though I love making baby clothes or children’s clothes I don’t sew for anyone else.
Super happy that you will attend the rehab program. Get the most out of it for yourself.👍

As I'm some one who didn't sew for many years and came back to it. But on my 2nd time round I lost my sewjo too for some of the reasons you mention. I too suffer with many ailments some serious so they can hamper my ability occasionally. Thank you for your encouragement. I will finish my summer dress. 👗

I got mine back by getting tennis elbow as hard to knit and volunteering at a repair cafe (yep look at that halo..). Has really motivated me to get back into sewing (especially when quiet - got to sit with my sewing machine so may as well sew something). The biggest thing that puts me off now is finding it hard to get things to fit (so did a trouser pattern day which I'm hoping will help a lot). Selfish sewing- pah! No-one talks about people being selfish when they buy themselves clothes. Good luck with your health.

Dear Harriett, So lovely to have you back--I have wondered where you have been. Thanks for the pep talk about sewjo. I have sewn nearly all my life and whilst being in the habit of thinking of myself as a sewist, my interest has waxed and waned through different ages and stages. All normal, if unforeseen. When I lack motivation now, I know to not push it. Life takes over and there can be more pressing issues.
PS Meanwhile, my stash continues to grow as having a life of its own....
All good wishes with your rehab and your business launch! You are an inspiration.

Lovely to see you back Harriet. I over did it sewing for others so I’m giving it a break for a while.😁

I had never heard the term 'selfish sewer' before so I googled it - wow, 408,000 results!

Harriet as a mom of three daughters I have gotten in the habit sewing for them and not myself. You are so very nice and sweet and I will set their requests in a box and sew for myself.

I have one rule when I make something for someone as a gift… they send me a photo of the person wearing it!!
Oh melt my heart, I love it so much to see it in action. 😍
I don't sew for people because they ask me to, I hate that!! So so boring…
Anyway, little pics make giving away something you put so much love into easier to part with ☺️

Some good advice there, Harriett. When I lose my sewjo its usually because I dont want to finish the thing I am working on!

Nicer see you again , your health is more important than social media. Sorry to hear your suffering with the heat, my daughter lives in Egham and she is struggling. Look after yourself xxx

Good to see you (looking fantastic btw!). I struggle with losing my sewjo, especially when ill or down, so this was very helpful. I also love the Fold Line - they approach things so professionally and I look forward to their weekly newsletter and never fail to find some inspiration there.
Very happy to hear that you are going to EDS rehabilitation - is this a residential course? I so hope that it will in some way improve your condition.
Have just pre-ordered your book, as I hate throwing out clothes where a stain will not shift.

I missed your videos! Thanks for sharing this, we do put lots of pressure on ourselves and I definitely do push myself to try new things when I am sewing and I should probably take a step back to enjoy what Ive done so far. Thanks for sharing 😊😊

Hi! Lovely video. I totally agree with all your points, especially the one on the "selfish" sewing. I *never* use that term. Having a hobby and investing time in this firm of self-care (be it having clothes that fit well and make you fell good, relaxing through sewing or just taking time for yourself to design your dream wardrobe on Pinterest) is crucial and beneficial, not selfish!
Great to see you back! Have an awesome weekend (hopefully the weather won't bother you too much)!

So agree with you. It is a great hobby and gives you such good feedback about your abilities and accomplishments. I dislike someone terming it "selfish". And, I don't know any sewers who have not at one time or another made something or fixed something for someone else. I also prefer to offer to teach someone to sew rather than taking on their project. I especially love to teach young kids.

Spot on Harriet, (pun intended) about the need to post. It’s what I’ve been saying too that social media creates an inadequacy with a need to keep being seen.
Quality not quantity applies to posting as well as making.

Fab video - agree with everything you said. Sewing is a hobby after all so if it's not making you happy just take time away. So glad you got on the rehab program. They have a really good reputation (I'm guessing Stanmore). I was chair of the HMSA for several years and fought hard to get these programs in place (I have EDS with POTS too (complicated by a severe blood clotting disorder) so don't like this hot weather too much either! )

Hi Harriet, so lovely to see you 😁. You made so much sense with all of your tips for getting back your sew jo. I for one will be using your techniques 👌. I'm going to pre order a copy of your very much needed book tonight as I'm always getting stuff down my clothes one way or another 😉. Hope you improve with your health very soon. I don't suppose the heat has been helping on that score either. All the best and looking forward to receiving your lovely book 👍😊😘

Good video Harriet! I have always hated the term selfish sewing. Why is it selfish to make something for yourself? I do make things for others that I know. I don't do it much, however. I get too stressed out that I'm going to mess up. (haven't in a long time.) I like to take my time and enjoy the sewing process. I took a break from sewing and just got back to it after around two months. Too many other things going on around here.

I recently lost my sewjo on a problem with a pattern. I had to adjust some pieces to cover for them not adding a seam allowance to one edge of piece before I could continue, only to later find out there is also a problem with some instructions which means I'll have to unpick a fare whack to be able to slip one instruction before the previous before I can finish it up with the rest. And I can't seem to justify starting my next project waiting yet for a break as I feel if I don't tackle it at this point I'll end up sending it into a permanent UFO state. Sigh..

I agree with many of your reasons for losing your sewing motivation. I have one to add. Sometimes I just want a break and do some other craft or get out a bit more or read a good book. Family. So many facets of life going on in our lives. So, I let it go and don't stress over it. Other activities can give me just as much satisfaction. Have sewn for so many years, I have stepped away and stepped back many times.

When I went to order the book there was a coupon space. Is there a code I should add to the space?I am so pleased it's an actual book and not a downloadable,it makes such a positive difference. A brilliant vlog and one I hope other people take note of.Sewing should be enjoyable and something that gives you pleasure.

Ah I so relate! I made a suede skirt the other day and the sewing was actually going pretty well and I was happy with the quality but I finished the whole thing and IT DIDN'T FIT. And I even took the seams out as much as I can. :( it really got me down because I was proud of the construction and killed my sewjo.

    • @lindabrown7374

Oh no! Could you possibly add some contrasting or matching strips of fabric down the sides to give you some more room? Just a thought.

LINDA BROWN didn't think of that! I decided to cut the front fold band off and added another that's wider. Idk it might look really weird but we will see.

When I was about 12, (57 now), and a beginning sewer I made an adorable dress, just assuming it would fit. I trimmed it with a decorative stitch, and it was way to small. There was no way to remedy the situation. I was so discouraged. But it was a good lesson, well kind of a crappy lesson, but I am still sewing all these years later. Sorry for your skirt.

I’ve only just found you and I love your video, I’ve sub-ed and liked. I’m going to watch more. I definitely want a copy of your book too, I don’t have a computer or laptop and just use my phone so I really love that you’re doing a physical book.
I have EDS too (and POTS and other freaky rubbish, but I don’t like my GP so I only go back when there’s danger to life!) and I love sewing (...verging on obsession - I was a very outdoor person but I’m not able to get out much now, hence the obsession!).
How are you surviving this weather?
I love sitting in the shower on cool but when I turn it off it’s twice as hot :( - and I waffle too (...I’m from the north, it’s genetic!) - Billie

I agree, selfish sewing is a term that needs to be dropped. We could call it self-sew or just sewing since it doesn't matter WHO you're sewing for. It's your hands, your time, your skill and there's nothing selfish about it.
Too, I'm not sure "hobby" gives sewing enough significance. We're expressing our creativity. It's my art; I'm an artist and the body is my pallet.
That's wonderful news, getting to do the rehab program. Good luck to you.
Do you know if coke softens fabric? I hear it works on denim, not sure about other fabrics.
