being 6'6 but weighing 190 pounds I constantly had to fight shorter guys who have tons of tricks to close the distance and they got great technical advice from their corner and all I got from my corner was ''keep up with the jab''.
To be fair, at 6'6" you'd be fighting mostly shorter fighters at any weight class.😂
I'm almost 6'5" and just barely made it up to 160 from the longest time at 130.
Still working on those gains.
You're right though, there's a very few generic "tips" for tall/taller fighters and that's generally all we get.
Peace, my brother in height.
"Keep hem on the distance"
@@tomnaughadie 130 pounds at 6" 5??? How is that even possible
@@tomnaughadie
Sounds like you would do pretty well as a Marathon runner….

Thank you for this.
I hope you do a whole series for tall/taller fighters.
It's relatively unexplored and undeveloped territory with very little existing content to compete with.
Thank you so much for making a video for taller fighters.
There might actually be literally a million videos for short/shorter fighters for every one video for tall/taller fighters.
Good idea as a content creator too because it's basically a content vacuum.
I'm taller, but not super tall (6'1") and even though most people think that tall guys should prefer the outside range, I find the best things about being taller happen in the clinch. Longer reach means I can initiate the clinch from distances and angles that surprise smaller guys. It also means I can lead with a trap with less risk, my knee strikes reach higher and farther, my frames and plum have more leverage, and my elbows have more crash.
All the way in or all the way out in Mauy Thai is where you want to be as the taller fighter 🕷️
@@Shereboxing I tell my guys that all the time.
Nice to see a fellow large elbow enjoyer
Even Saenchai loss to taller clinchers like Yodwicha Banchamek
@@gw1357 clinch for taller guys is exactly the info I was trying to find when I bumped into this video.
I can't find any information on it.
I'm a 6'4" and I used to wrestle.
So I feel comfortable in close range where I can grapple and manipulate the body of shorter guys.
I wanted to incorporate some striking in close range into my game because it seems like it would fit the best.
But I can't find any info on it.
It's always: "keep them far" and "jab jab jab"
Anyway.... do you know where I can find more information on it?
Some instructional with drills and heavy bag work would be awesome!
I am 6'0" at 155lbs, and usually considered one of the taller, longer guys in my gym. Ive been training/sparring about a year now, so while i am still very new i hope i can give some advice or stuff ive been working on.
Main thing for me recently has been control using my lead arm. Theres the obvious stuff like jabs and feints to maintain distance or use to hand trap and frame. But another thing i think gets overlooked, especially by tall guys, is to take advantage of your opponents posture and position using that lead hand reach advantage.
For example, if we are in that middle range, i can use straight punches to get opponents guard up and have them plant their weight, then use a lead "hook" to shift them into a kick/or to cut an angle to get out of a corner/or even just to reset and get back to a longer range.
The same idea of breaking posture applies for when the shorter opponent does get inside. I can use that lead arm frame to push down and break their posture, allowing me opportunities to counter or disengage.
You dont have to be stronger than the opponent either for this to work. If their base is really solid and you cant quite move them with your control, then just use the control to keep them in place and move yourself around them. In this way i feel like it should also work for the taller guys who like to use footwork and maintain distance, not necessarily stay in the pocket or clinch.
I think this gets overlooked by taller guys because we always get told "use your reach advantage. Stay long range. Work the jab and teep." Which kind of translates to "stay away from them. Dont get physical at all." But the reality is that shorter guys will almost always eventually get inside on you. So as a taller guy this type of control/framing and breaking posture or directing the opponent is what has helped me survive when that does happen
Watch out bro, all guys 6’4 and up gonna come screaming “ that’s not tall”😂… I’m 6’1 and can totally relate to what u wrote( yea I actually read it all) I’m 145lbs brooo faaccckk!
Trap the hands frequently. Their reach is less so you can trap to strike and they can't take advantage of the openings because their reach is shorter. Use the trapping to close for knees and clinch. Use the shoulder during arm extensions to block the face and add an inch or two to reach. Learn to quickly cover your open lead side of the body. Learn to quickly check on the lead leg to nullify inside and outside legs kicks during jabs and forward movement. Use the teep on their lead leg to break timing and rhythm during their forward movements. Adapting this to equal height and taller is challenging.
Thank you! There’s always videos on how to fight against the taller fighter and it leaves us to figure out how to be the taller fighter by ourselves
Great job Shane for covering this. Always impressive to see you explore and fill in the gaps in established fighting systems.
Your channel is very helpful, thank you for what you do
Finally! I am so glad someone has made this video. Another idea that seems underrepresented is how to dela with a strong, stocky short guy.
Comment for the algorithm to support this video and channel.
Cheers, Shane, thank you.
They already have the advantage of long limbs
Now you're giving them tips☠️
We short guys are dead
There's weight classes so it's a trade off of advantages.
Plus there's literally infinite tips out there for short/shorter fighters.
Chill.

As a tall guy with not a lot of experience in martial arts and started Muay Thai a couple months ago... My stomach is tired of taking abuse lol, I need the tips.
This video came at a perfect time 💯🤝🏿🔥
Thank you for this, haven’t seen anyone really giving real advice as a taller trainer
I really want to get into some form of combat sport I’m 6’3” 250 and this video really made me confident that with training I could capable of a lot
Came looking for tall boxer / mma tips no shot got what i wanted to find
Do a fight day video with Shon!!
Let’s GOOOOO MUCHO!!!!
We will find out at one openweight 16 man tournament
Great video we need more tips for taller fighters lol
Thanks! I'm 6'1", 165lb. I need more of these tips.
6'8" 165 ... appreciate the video!
Hey do you have any drills for the cobra bag or can I use the same drills as the double end bag on the cobra
6'7 190 i like the framing to deal with overhand rights, ive always just backed away to avoid them but whenever i get lazy with the jab they tend to get through more often. coming from boxing as well so def need to work on the teeps and round kicks
I get why people make tips for "the little guy," but given weight divisions it's actually a trade off advantages between the taller and shorter fighters in a division.
It also kinda makes sense at first thought for self defense, but short guys probably start more fights than tall guys.
Helping "the little guy" should be based on weight.
Height based tips, tactics and strategies should be thought of and taught equally from both perspectives.
Lot of possibilities..timing can give you an edge ...(there is always hopelessness in the conflict)
Those guys seem so nice, BUT in the cage I imagine "DANGER Will Robinson!" LOL
thanks im 6,5 love this!
I'm 6'8 and 249lbs and strait striking and grapples were me favorite things to do
Hey Shane I remember asking you a long time ago on how to defend yourself against someone who is excellent at bjj but one more thing how long do I need to train bjj in order for me to defend myself against somone who is excellent at bjj I'm curious
Finally some content for taller fighters. Being 5' 7 isn't always glamorous.
😶
Wait, you think 5'7 is tall???? 😂😂😂 You're a dwarf, my man
whos gonna tell him 💀💀
Ayo got to make sure the people in my gym don’t see this 💀
I’ve noticed it’s hard to even have pads held for me because when I kick my instructor constantly backs up - this caused my 2 months ago to kick and instead of hitting my shin, I kicked straight into the pad with my toe and it was one of the worst pains I remember in a while. I’m not sure if I fractured something or just sprained it - haven’t been to the doc yet, but it didn’t swell I think.
I’m not sure if because I’m tall he was worried I’d kick him or something? I’m only 6 ft 1
6'8 240 pounds, trying to go down to 200 but this is the exact video I was looking for, I tend to have to rely on keeping distance due to my lack of flexibility 😅
Jab, tip…and the knees. Those are hard
Thank you so much, I get why people make all those videos for "the little guy" but, the only advice I ever get is"use your reach"😅
The advice of "use your reach" is truly the equivalent of "win the fight by punching them"
Then went and got real-life Sagat to do a video. Seriously though love the focus on taller figthers in this video.
Im 6’3 I’m constantly getting caught with inside leg kicks. My kru says to narrow my stance, but when i do i feel like I’m off balance, cause i have such long legs. Any advice?
For smaller guy you should go inside for clinch and watchout for their knee while using your elbow to strike. Taller opponent has longer arm so they can't use their elbow effectively when clinch! And you can climb up their limb to knee or elbow their head
Any tips on being the smaller guy please ?
What do you do when u have your hands pined ?
Always always my
Issue … very difficult.
as a decently tall guy I need to worry about not getting teeped in the ball
Short guys really in here complaining that there's one video for tall/taller fighters when there's infinite content catering to short/shorter fighters, this video actually contains both perspectives, just because you're short doesn't mean you'll never fight someone shorter and there's weight divisions so it's a trade off of advantages anyway.
Next up: tall striker versus tall striker. No seriously, I regularly get my ass beat by fighters my size because I always train with smaller, lighter people. I feel like if I fought myself, I'd lose 😵💫
u should make video reverse D:
cuz a taller must win vs short. if he cant?? he must go swim
Don’t give tall of fighters tips, 😂 I find it hard as it is
Shhhhh after all the tips for shorter fighters on the internet 😒
@@ghost.7566 that’s because you’ve got the reach advantage for the taller fighter, we need it 🤣
There's weight classes so it's a trade off of advantages.
@@tomnaughadie Weight classes not height. You can have 6'1" fighter in the same category with 5'7"
@@RickGrimes__ I know and they will be about the same weight because they are in the same weight class.
Each will have different advantages and different disadvantages.
we need more videos man this is a joke, almost discriminatory im 6’4 getting lit up lol
6'5" hot tall boyz summer👊
I am a new fighter and I am tall, when I sparring with shorter oppenent they always what to rush in and do big swing, it's more dangerous then normal pace sparring. kind of tired of that, especially those short and musciler guy.
❤️
Nah nah nah this will not cut it lol we have no videos to help tall guys. This is fight tips so i need more, we know keep moving, take angles an dont let the smaller guy plant for shots. But more specifically i need some secret bruce lee tips to counter or defend the ridiculous amount of attacks i get to the giant target on me for body shots
Time that knee and elbow (if you can) for when they come to throw body shots. Master the long guard and having a strong base and it'll all fall into place
@@jaspreetkhatkar6 🙏🙏
Is that Sagat from Street Fighter?
This makes me wonder what’s considered tall in martial arts? Like over 6’1?
I would say its for weight classes. So the average height in UFC for Welterweight category is 5'10" but you have tall fighters like Shavkat Rakhmonov who is 6'4"
I would say it's in relation to the size of your opponent.
Depends on your weight class. Muay thai legend dieselnoi was 6'2 at 130 and he TOWERED over his opponents
Taller than the other guy
@@RickGrimes__ shavkat is 6,4???
I'm the first comment on this video
just take advantage of the reach 4Head
If you are short, just get close and hit them
If you are tall, just stay far away and hit them
Really very simple
/S
If u tall be aggressive knees elbows n kicks are yo best friends be aggressive
Do the short ones pls im starting muay thai and imma use it to fight taller duds
