The start of a log Cabin SOLO- harvesting logs

- I've always wanted to build a log cabin.
The trees I'm felling are black spruce, common here in Interior Alaska. They are typically found in dense stands and are not typically used due to their small size. They're really not used for much and they choke the land. I'm going to search for logs 6-8 inches in diameter for this project. This is property we own. By harvesting these logs, the forest will also benefit with more sunlight and room for other trees to grow bigger and stronger. I will also be able to use more of the land. Wood is the most sustainable material to build with, and using timber from my own land is a more economical option.
I'm using a draw knife, bark spud, Collins axe, and an Echo CS-400 Chainsaw. I've been running a chainsaw for over 25 years. This is my first Echo. I usually use Stihl chainsaws, but my last one (MS-250) blew up this spring. To be honest, I'm loving this Echo! New fan!
Thanks for watching!

1) Thanks in advance for NOT commenting on my lack of PPE, chainsaw use, or how harvesting trees is killing the forest (which, in fact, is doing the opposite.) After nearly 8 years on UA-cam I know what's coming.
2) I don't take unnecessary risks and being alone heightens your situational awareness. I don't take it lightly. I wouldn't do this alone if I didn't feel confident of my abilities. I have a great first aid kit and people who know where I am. (My only injury was a small cut from my bark spud.)
3) I've been running a chainsaw for over 25 years, and though you may not approve of my style, or you would do things differently, that's ok. There's room for all of us! There is power in radical DOING.
4) I have 52 logs total. I hope to build a 12 x 16-ish sized cabin. It may have a framed upper loft. We'll see. I've got lots of time to figure this out. The logs will season until next summer.
5) The bark will be burned. You could make a basket or two if you had time, but I'm busy with the logs. The bark dries to a brittle crisp in a matter of days. It could not be used as roofing material. Full of holes and just asking for leakage and bugs.
I appreciate you all and thanks for watching!
You are absolutely amazing and such an inspiration!!! I’ve been watching you and your husband ever since seeing you guys on Alone, and I love yalls style! You are one amazing, strong woman! Thank you for sharing your life with us!! ~Jen
Brooke, I wish I had 1/2 the skills you have and the knowledge base too. One day, when I grow up, I wanna be just like Brooke. Sure wish I lived up in AK and had the chance to personally fangirl. You're an inspiration to so many. Much love from a Pacific Northwesterner! ❤ (PS: can't wait for this build - log cabins are my absolute dream!)
Every tree is different Brooke 👍😁I’ve used a chainsaw for years there all different
There's an old song and cartoon on YT about loggers stirring their coffee with their thumbs- I'll be watching you close! Oh, remember one rock will convey ground water up to your logs- but two stacked, won't! Watch Townsend's log cabin videos, and do the opposite! Roof rotted in 2-3 years, chimney barely above the roof line, and sitting next to a blazing fire, you could see the air he exhaled! Of course his was a replica of a winter camp cabin...
Brooke, I've cut down and worked up a lot of trees myself in the past and I did not use any safe gear just common sense when using a chainsaw. Saw nothing wrong with the way you cut them down and you know the Indians kept the forest clear of all debris, so if we did what they did, we wouldn't have as many forest fires as we do today; and thinning the trees is another good way to help the forest. Just keep doing what you have been do, there are a lot of people out there that enjoy watching and wishing they could be doing just what you do. Looking forward to your next video!
I realize your logs will dry for a year before you build, but I found it amusing that Mick is waiting for a lumber delivery and mama Whipple is doing her own logging 😊
I believe Mick is on a time limit and doing his best to get something soon. I believe that would be the reason for his need for lumber.
bahahahah
The irony😂❤
Time is a factor in everything in life. If you already have a shelter then a secondary shelter is less time sensitive, other than The need to get your timber dropped and prepped during the proper season, such as now the sap was still running and making it easier. In that case work smarter not harder.
Really enjoyed these last two videos. I know your cabin is going to look awesome. Enjoy lil Moosie as well! 😎🙏🏻🖖🏻
If you're watching this short version, do yourself a favor and watch the long one too. I didn't think i could watch someone logging trees for an hour but it was mesmerizing! I was hooked it in minutes.
awww thanks lol
Loved the long version and delighted to watch again in the "short version". Keep up the great work. We're loving it!
Waiting for the next episode. Keep it up !!
This recap is great! The explanation of how to be efficient to the tools you use is great. Reminds me of Bush Radical's offerings. Loved the original and your personal sweaty, dirty water, managing the bugs and fun with Moose footage . You , Brooke, are an inspiration. You don't need to go the the gym to get that toned body!
🥰🥰🥰🥰
Already watched the full version. Can’t wait to see you start building this cabin, will be worth the wait!
But what happens with the house they bought ?
Inspirational. Im 63 female and have a cozy spot on a stream in CT. My difficulty right now is muscle stiffness after a hard days work, but I think of all your accomplishments, and your attitude and you are a real deal. Thanks girl. The God i believe in is beyond Wonderful.💚glad we are in this together!!! So glad!
And I huff and puff because I have laundry to fold! You amaze me girl! I get tired watching you! You truly are an inspiration! It was because of you I took my first solo camping trip last year. I loved every minute of it!
Love it!!

I've never seen bark removed like that before. I know it was 10 days of hard work, but it almost looked easy the way you did it. I'm blown away that you could do all that alone... and video record too. You are nothing short of amazing. Love you. 🌈💖🧡💛💚💙💜💋
I love that quote: "I'll worry about everything else as it comes along. "
I like how your little Buddy comes into the work place and surveys all the trees on the ground . I believe he approves of all your good hard work . 😮😊🐕
My echo is still going 41 years later. I love it.
You’re such an inspiration to me! I am a newbie woodswomen who just bought 20 acres of forested land in Montana. Thank you for being a role model for women who want to do these types of projects on their own. You rock!
👏 good luck!!
It was pretty awesome seeing how you could peel the logs! We're looking forward to the cabin build! 😀
Hello from NS Canada. I watched the full version. So in awe of you. Can’t wait to follow this new journey.
🥰🥰🥰
Another fantastic series. Thank you for sharing this cabin build. You are amazing!!! So strong minded & with so much gumption!! 💪🐻🌲🌲🌲 Wildflowers are beautiful. Such an Idyllic setting for your new cabin.
you are saving so much money with your hardwork harvesting your own logs. amazing. Cant imaging the price to purchase 52 long logs would be these days in the lower 48s.
Isn’t that the truth? Can’t imagine the outside costs!
@@billiegoodman4872indeed! Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱 and my channel 😊 and the countryside 🏡!
Last week, you were floating down the Yukon, and now you're logging for a cabin, wow, very impressive.
So proud of you what great Role model for people our age 40’s -50’s we can still get Physical ..best of luck young lady 💯👍🏼😍
It’s hard to summarize the amount of work it took to fell 50 some logs, but you did it remarkably well. Love your videos and your perseverance. You are an inspiration to us all.
Thank you!
Watching you peel those logs again in this video was so satisfying. Never seen such a clean peel.
There is something so satisfying about seeing that bark come off those trees!
You did amazing. I am so impressed by your knowledge and so much hard work. I loved the long version too.
Brook, I'm exhausted, ready for a shower and my back hurts just from watching all the work you are doing! LOL! But what a satisfaction you will have when your cabin is finishef, just knowing that you did it all with your own hands and sweat equity! I'm fascinated by your energy and knowledge of the forest! You go girl!!
Brooke you never disappoint! Your amazing work ethic..loved both versions of this an can’t wait to continue watching your progress.
Watching/hearing bark peeled away like that is my new brain-tingling obsession. It's like ASMR. And they look so beautiful all raw like that. Can't wait to see what's next!
I look forward to the future cabin build! This will be fantastic!
I want to thank you so much
For showing all of us -
The great detail work that you
Are putting into this project
Keep these videos coming please!!
I remember doing that tree cutting for my Uncle Bill's house when I was in my early teens at his new homestead about 20 miles East of Dawson Creek BC. However, he had a portable sawmill and squared them up to 41/2" * 61/2". It made the crib framing so mush easier, but boy that sawmill was another story. I bought a brand new axe, but it still ricocheted off the branches which made branch trimming a real challenge. They were mostly pine. My Grandpa Fred wouldn't let me do it for safety reasons. Oh! how I long to go back to those days...
Was saying the same thing....that was so satisfying watch you peel that bark off like that! You are one heck of a hard worker girl! Can't wait to see the finished project!
🥰🥰🥰🥰
You are right. Its very satisfying watching the bark peel off so smooth like that. Cant wait for the next episode.
Can’t wait to see you build your new cabin, we know it will be Awesome, take care.🏴💕
Brookie, you make logging look easy! Have a blessed day!
🇳🇱greetings from the Netherlands for a young lady whom I have a lot of respect for who is only going to build a hut and cut the material she thinks she needs for it herself greetings from Hans (76 years old) from Roosendaal 10 high in his apartment on to the next vlog .👍👍👍👍👍💯💯💯🍀
Who else gets the satisfaction watching peeling the bark off logs.
So much fun watching you peel those logs❤
I live in Michigan and love the natural beauty. I admire your knowledge and hardwork. As a single woman, you're very inspiring to watch. If I was ever stuck in the woods, you would have my vote as a companion. Ever considered being on the TV show Alone? You would rock it! Sending you much peace, love, and light ❤
Bahaha I’ve been on twice
Thank you for showing and naming your tools. Your video is priceless. I have not ever been close to cutting or pulling bark off of logs. Your knowledge base is massive and you are sharing it. Reading thru your video comments, I became curious of your family's hard-working reputation. Watching you inspired me to keep going around my home with my projects. I just watched your son's video where he said you bet him $500 he couldn't get the cabin closed in (?) by such a date in August.
You are very welcome
I completely understand personal journeys and projects. It's pretty self fulfilling.
I watched the long version as well & loved both! I admire your courage & your abilities!
It is so pleasing to watch you chainsawing, peeling those logs like bananas, and working like the confident skilled woman you are ❤. God has blessed you with strength, good health, and a great attitude of gratitude!
My muscles are sore just from watching your hard work! You’re awesome, Brooke. Looking forward to the next update. Thanks for sharing.
I want to come hang out with you and learn all the things! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
I don't comment often, but just wanted to say I love all of your videos and look forward to every time you upload.
You are so amazing! Thank you for taking us along on this cabin build!
A woman to be admired... Blessings to you and I can't wait to see the build. Take care
I believe the home you will craft with your own hands will be really wonderful attractive and safe. Be encouraged!
I love you, I love this and I'm going to love seeing the cabin take shape. The visibility of women in building is so important and this project goes so far beyond interior design and 'girl power' into true equality and recognition that ANYONE can do this if they really want to. I am sure you are inspiring men and women to believe in themselves and give it a go. The tree bark coming off was a dream!
Girl your a hard working women, Your cabin will turn out great, Thanks for sharing!
I love the slow motion falling trees….
Great work! I cannot wait to see this cabin evolve. God bless you, praying for you.

I considered not watching this since I watched yesterday's video, but I found it enjoyable to have you giving information all throughout. I didn't know you wouldn't be able to use the logs right away.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have an Echo 18 inch CS 400 I bought 5 or 6 years ago from a company going out of business so I got it 50% off and I love it as well and it has ran flawlessly and gave me zero issues.
❤Brooke, You are my hero! We put up 16 cords of hardwood every year for firewood to heat our home.
You are a beast!! I hope to learn to use our chainsaw soon. I am usually the haule, splitter, and stacker while my husband cuts. 🎉
What an accomplishment, Brooke! Can’t wait to see the cabin you build🥰 Keep rocking’ life👍🏼😉
the longer version is really good too.. great work Brooke 💞🙏✨

My goodness you have a lot of strength.

I really am enjoying this hard work that you are showing all of us!
Watching the bark being peeled off the logs, especially in one big piece, is just so mesmerizingly soothing and amazingly calming! I could watch that for hours! It relieves stress even better than popping bubble wrap! Thanks for sharing this, and you are definitely the energizer bunny on stefoids!
Enjoyed the full version earlier today.
Brooke you are one hell of a woman. Not many women can say there building their own cabin in Alaska or anywhere. I'm very proud of you sweetheart ❤
Jumping up and down on the tree you just cut down looked so fun!
Dave , and Brook Whipple are doers , and utilize whatever is at their command that being what is in their hands, and what can be accessed through their eyes, and with their brains. From Canon 80 EOS 80 D video/audio cameras, (haha, of course I looked that up!) To using solar generators, solar paneling, LED lights etc..all battery charged , and operated with/without the help of the electric grid. (All compliments of late 20th/early 21st century technologies, of course.) They both also have hands on knowhow in shaving tree stems into usable logs, and then putting up pretty boss log cabins, digging, and putting up useable outhouses, and I've seen them sink pipes into unground currents of water ; all affixed with old timey hand pumps for fresh water. I've seen Brooke put up a shower stall , and despite it being old timey , she still was able to connect it all to a hot water heater, which provided both her ,(and Dave) hot showers. They have knowhow for sure. If you're all able to get ahold of a draw knife, bark spud, pickax, hammers, nails, and such like ? Try it out that being live the off-grid lifestyle . I don't think it's novel at all; (even though this couple are very innovative bushcrafters.) However, homesteading may not be new it is a step into the future of this new 21st century paradigm that we all now must live, and/or survive in .(Living good is preferable to merely surviving of course, (but you gotta eat! ..hahaha, Eeeeellll! )) Lol.
Brooke love your ten day goal to fell, measure, stripe and move 50 pus 8 inch logs. Your editing skills have been spot on! I enjoyed your logger food and Christmas tree topper in July! Thanks for sharing your wonderful journey!
Thanks so much!!
Watched every second of the longer version and was still fascinated by this more condensed version. Awesome, just awesome.
