The number of bikes and the urgency of the biking made it impossible to continue to allow them on the pedestrian walkway. Bikes never belonged on the walkway really. Back when I was younger and very few people were on the bridge, it wasn't quite as bad. As ugly as this new path is, it's better than all other alternatives.
I love the new path if I lived there and was trying to get somewhere thats what I would want. If I wanna chill with people or take in view I can walk. Someday. Side note the bike path still has an amazing view and so much to look at with the underside of the bridge and all. New Yorkers spoiled.
you said it was very hazardous and many bikes are going full speed, tourists stopping for photos, it's super crowded. I didn't have good time trying to dodge bokes and pedestrians.
Well the bike path could have been on the right side of the road instead of being in the center. In that way the ride gets a little bit less claustrophobic.
You don't want to end up headfirst over the barrier into a speeding car due to someone irresponsibly overtaking. So, I think the mesh fencing is an appropriate, extra precaution.
I agree and I understand why chain-link was chosen since chain-link is cheap and does the job. I think in the future plexiglass can be used but then there's more graffiti and vandalism to worry about.
This seems really good to me. It was cool how many cars you passed. Perhaps on the blind corners they should have a solid yellow line to indicate no passing, although many cyclists would ignore it. If you want the old better view, you always have the option of walking your bike over the pedestrian route.
In China for blind corners they expanded the lane wider and put a barrier inbetween the 2 directions to prevent people from crossing. This was also in a new area on newly re-designed bridge.
Ive biked over the bk bridge for a long time. Ive been advocating for a proper bike lane ever since my first time on it. But now after I rode the new bike lane, I was finding myself looking up at all the foot traffic above me. God I miss screaming at people to get out of the damn bike lane xD

Shouldn't there be another bike lane in the road heading the opposite direction on the bridge? They should make each bike lane one way and it will take care of the blind spot issue during overtaking right?
It is fine as it is now. There isn't enough bike traffic to warrant taking out another lane. Also the city wants to make getting into Manhattan more difficult. They don't want to make it harder to get out.
@@14moti You create more bike traffic by creating more bike infrastructure, that's generally how induced demand works. The large spike in cyclists NYC had during covid wouldn't have stayed if we chose not to build out more bike lanes for them. More car lanes results in more drivers, and similarly more bike lanes results in more bikers, so more cyclists who feel safe on the streets, and less drivers who feel it's necessary to drive is the end goal.
That's the way it is on other bridges. What you don't see is all of the various structures in place to get cars from various streets onto the bridge... A pretty old bridge that's already supporting more traffic thsn it was intended to. I am pretty sure there are on-ramps on the Manhattan side that prevent lanes on both sides. What most cyclists in NYC learn is to take the Manhattan Brg if going to downtown BKLN. The Williamsburg Bridge would appear to remain the only bike friendly bridge of the East River collection.
I did the Brooklyn Bridge on the bike lane many years ago and I have to tell you it’s an experience to be sure especially when you get off it and go through lower Manhattan. The shots you can get of the city from the Brooklyn Bridge are phenomenal.
I rode it once on the regular level and I could tell you, that’s brutal, though the ride downhill isn’t a problem. I’d like to ride that new bike lane in time
Actually, the bike lane is where trolleys operate Manhattan-bound. When the Brooklyn Bridge opened, it wasn't a six-lane bridge. From 1883 to 1950, it was different. The trolley tracks were separated with x-like girders with I-beams on the top (like what it is today), while each traffic lane is open, nothing covering them. The middle lane is where streetcars operate, yet pedestrian traffic used it as a secondary lane. The outermost lane is mainly for pedestrian traffic. There were trolley stations on where the approaches located today. Due to the popularity of the subway, trolleys and streetcars started to decline. In 1950, the bridge was converted into a six-lane bridge. Trolley stations were demolished. The old New York World Building had to be demolished as well to make way for the new Manhattan entrance. Anyway, the bike lane is a good idea. Not perfect but too narrow.
Lovely video. It kinda felt that you were in cage all the trip. Are there any emergancy exits from the bike line, in case something happens to bikers? Because it looks like they are trapped between two fences all the way.
No matter ,that we lose out on how majestic she the Brooklyn bridge is always spended guy u have created yourself a marvelous job. Thanks 4 Charing we us.
They should put up signage near the blind corners, or those wide angle mirrors that allow you to see around the bends. Overall, not bad. Truly separated and the chain link fence provides good protection. The surface is much improved over the previous bike lane, and it’s more functional than before. You do lose the great view you had before. Reminds me of the Queensboro Bridge bike lane now.
I've never been to New York, but the Brooklyn Bridge videos always got me so excited. All full of people standing on the bike path. Finally there is a better solution.
It is narrow, but that fact that we have more space for people instead of cars make me happy. So many organizations fought for that. Now we need a lane on the other side. Hopefully soon. If we can bring back trolleys like back in the day that would be so good

I am used to bike and pedestrian lanes being on the outside of a bridge. Sometimes feeling like you are hanging off the edge. Great Vid/Commentary Question..What happens when there is a medical emergency on the bikeway? Like a collision.. How would riders make their way around the blockage? How would emergency services access the site? Is there stairs to access the pedestrian deck or a ladder escape?
It an old bridge built before the turn of the century, there is water on one side and car traffic on the other. Where would the ladder even go? They will do what ever do for walking path for the bike lane.
When I was in Brooklyn a few years back (as a tourist) it wasn’t a pleasant experience because I was trying to enjoy the bridge and take pictures. I was excited to see the view, next thing I know I hear “Excuse me bike coming through!!!” … As a visitor I had no idea what the heck was going on because there were so many people that you couldn’t even see the lines. I felt sorry for the cyclists AND the pedestrians. We just wanted to enjoy the view while folks on bikes clearly had places to go. As a cyclist myself I would’ve been frustrated too so I’m glad they designated a space for us. It’s the right thing to do. It may not be perfect but it’s much better than fighting through a crowd. I hope they continue to make it better!
It looks like the express route. Not a great view. There are some blind spots. Be careful during the night and crowded weekends. Is there enough lighting for night riders? You have to be extra polite on those narrow roads.
The problem is that pedestrians wouldn’t stay out of the bike lane. I saw this all the time. Theoretically, if pedestrians stayed in the pedestrian lane, there would be no chance of getting hit. But, in all honesty, the space was just too narrow to keep the division, so this separate Ike lane makes much more sense.
The chain link fence atop the concrete barrier looks more of a hindrance than a help. The warning of a signal ahead towards the end is helpful but countdown markers intervals for the pedestrian crossing would be beneficial too.
Good to see the redesigned bike lane! 😎 The downside is not being able to enjoy the view of the Brooklyn Bridge, but it's safer without all the pedestrians walking on the bike lane.
What are the rules regarding the bike lane and traffic lights? I must be missing something, because you ran at least 3 red lights, and two of those in front of NYPD vehicles. As for the promenade, have you done a walking video across the pedestrian promenade? The last time I was in NYC I wanted to walk that, but didn't get the chance.
Wow,never knew there was a separate bike lane, last time i rode by bike across the bridge i had to take my stairs...now i know to do it..are electric scooters allowed..? Thanks
They should paint it green to make it look friendlier. The green bike lanes in NYC has improved the look and the vibes of a lot of neighborhoods. Build more protected bike lanes please.
Blind corner? Oh you mean like on the beginning corner on the Manhattan side of the Manhattan Bridge? When it gets busy, just slow down right as you get to it. On the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn to Manhattan, once you get over that middle hump, it's all downhill from there and right into the street. I feel very safe knowing that the jersey barrier with chain link fence is there to protect us. I don't consider it a blind corner, there's plenty of space. You know what's narrow? The infamous choke point near the end of the East River Park bike path.
